In the words of the great philosopher Huey Lewis, _It's hip to be _*_square._*

Unless you're building roofs, you really don't need those triangle squares. Try squares and combination squares are what woodworkers use. My first square as a greenhorn woodworker was a roofing square and once I gained a little knowledge and experience, I found that roofing square to be pointless and now it just hangs on the wall collecting dust. If I ever need to build a gable roof, I'll use it. Until then, there are much better squares for woodworking.

I've used a speed square specifically with a bevel gauge several times to mark and measure angles for woodworking projects. It's a cheap, easily found square that is much more likely to be square than a cheap try square or combination square.

I have two books by Fred Hodgson on the many ways you can use the carpenter's or framing square. Both were written around 1905-1910. They have a wealth of information that most carpenters don't know on the different ways you can use the square in figuring out angles, length of braces, how to mark out geometric shapes other than square or rectangle, ect.
The speed square is very useful in woodworking, I think. Better than a combo square...at least for me. And I have good accurate combination squares.
      I have 40 yrs experience as a carpenter and although I don't know everything, I know a little. 😉
