    I must admit that I was a dice junkie in my role playing days. Thank you for this blast from the past!

    This immediately made me think of a game I owned in my youth from TSR called Dragon Dice Game. I'm afraid I procrastinated too long on it and never ended up playing it. But I used to love just looking at the symbols on the dice and reading the rules. It was a game onto itself. Another memory from my youth of a game I once owned was walking down to my local party goods store to purchase supplements for a board game called either Flipsiders or Flipsliders. They were shaped like audio cassettes and had a compartment for magnetic pegs as playing pieces and a flick out folding gameboard.

    Captain - Nostalgia is thick on this one. I remember using a crayon to color in the numbers on my older brothers’ dice.

    I've been watching your videos on a binge for a week, 24/7. I'm ready for a video of you actually playing D&D with your players. I'm trying to learn the game, after 38 years of not playing, because I was actually trying to do something with my life, haha.

    I still have a set of original dice from the 1981 Moldvey set in the plastic bag and crayon. I remember coloring in the dice from another set too. Still use the D20 from that. 😊

  • @MemphiStig

    I had a set of those from the Moldvay Basic set. They were light blue and came with a white crayon. As long as I had those dice, I had that crayon. The d20, of course, was numbered the same as a d10 (0-9, but twice). I had a couple of other 20's like that from elsewhere (the "original" d20's). These days, tho, if I were into dice that much, I'd just buy a 3D printer and make my own. Mini's too. That's what I really wish we'd had bitd. Can you imagine?

    Hey Cap'n, the TSR Moldvay era dice are not actually the same as the Mentzer boxed set and Dragon Dice. Not only were the colors different, but so was the number mapping. For example, on the d12 the number at the bottom of the 12 is 8 on the Moldvay era dice, but 1 on the Mentzer era dice. The typeface is different also. The Moldvay dice have a rounded 3, while the Mentzer dice (like the Holmes dice) have a flat-topped ezh-style Ʒ.

    • @captcorajus
      @captcorajus  Рік тому +2

      True. The D20 numbers on the Moldvay Dice were also smaller, and more difficult to read. That said, the differences overall are nominal. They were made of the same kind of plastic and the sizes of the dice were very close as well. I could have gone into the minutia of such things, but I didn't want to bore people with it.

    I still have a few green dice from my Moldvay Basic Set, the d20 is quite round. To be honest TSR's dice were not exactly the best quality of the day. That was, for me at least, The Armory. They had all the best rpg accessories, blue ink hex paper, blue ink graph paper, the first battle mat, paints and a spray primer that was amazing, for it's time. But the best thing was the dice. Oh sure they were an overall distributor, but their dice were amazing. The first clear polyhedral dice, the first metallics, amazing misprints. I still have a lot of Armory dice. When they sold to Chessex I was a bit sad, it felt like when TSR came down hard on third party publishers, something had passed that would never be seen again. I am so glad there is the OSR, just wish some of the old nerds were still with us.
    Keep up the good work and Game On!

    Amusing. I think I still have my d10 from when I bought a set of these at Waldenbooks in the Cache Valley Mall. Red plastic, yellow crayon. I also still have at least one of the dice from my blue box basic set, a green d8. I'm not sure I have enough nostalgia for the dice to buy these, though.

    I got the tan set from my moldvay set. I also have a set of Threshold dice, they look nice, but they don't have the same feel.
    By that I mean that Threshold dice feel nice and robust. The original dice feel cheap and light. Which adds to its charm

    @captcorajus great video - have you ever come across the 1986 Dragon Dice Percentage Generators (TSR8005), which had the same Keith Parkinson art as the TSR8006 Dragon Dice Random Number Generator dice blister card? Was there any text on the back of the blister card aside from the upc barcode?

      No its not. As I said in the video, he's upgraded his production, and does them in batches based on the order he recieves. All you have to do is IM him on the FB page and your dice will be produced when he does the next batch. In that case of the BECMI dice, that will be Octorber.

    I want my dice balanced and precision-crafted, not _"hand-made."_

    • @captcorajus
      @captcorajus  Рік тому +1

      Those two phrases together are incompatible. Injection molds invariably create voids in the dice, and thus imbalance. Hand crafted dice use a high strength poly resin and are hand crafted for balance and smoothness. If you want accurate dice you want individually hand crafted dice, not mass produced shclock.

    • @fleetcenturion
      @fleetcenturion Рік тому

      @@captcorajus - I think we have completely different ideas of what that term means. Precision dice, like you'd find in casinos, start from a single, consistent chunk of polymer, and crafted by a machine, controlled by a computer.
      The only way that dice would actually be "hand-made," is when you order them from China, being sanded down by the children of political prisoners, too young to have their organs harvested.

    • @johnnysmythe2552
      @johnnysmythe2552 11 місяців тому

      I’m not sure that’s accurate. Hand made dice are often sanded and polished to get rid of sprue marks. Tons of studies show Gamescience we’re the best most random dice and they are injected. Voids are less of a problem than the shape of the die and area of the faces.

    • @fleetcenturion
      @fleetcenturion 11 місяців тому

      @@johnnysmythe2552 - Again, that's why the vast majority of plastic casino dice are clear, so players and staff alike can verify the lack of bubbles and flaws.

    • @rossvanderweide8067
      @rossvanderweide8067 11 місяців тому

      my dice are a little different than your average hand made sets you see all over. my molds are designed similar to an injection molding die, my dice do have sprues but they are minimal especially when compared with game science which have a huge sprue mark, you wont see much if any of that on my dice, ive read the studied you refer to and I cant truthfully say my dice are any more or less random, but i do go through alot of design work to insure dimensional accuracy. Im not really a crafter, i approach dice making more like a manufacturing or product development engineer "its part of my day job lol".
