  • A recent scandal in the NFL's Miami Dolphins organization brought to light the havoc bullying can create in the workplace -- whether it's the locker room or the boardroom. Bullies classify as "difficult" co-workers, and they can have big effects on job performance.
In this edition of Smith Business Close-Up with the University of Maryland's Robert H. Smith School of Business, host Jeff Salkin sits down with Cynthia Kay Stevens to talk about the impact of bullies in the workplace and what to do about them and other difficult co-workers.

Bullied employees sometimes don't even make it six months because they feel like maybe they should quit, or they get fired. I think that what I've noticed is that some people are really difficult and egotistical. Also, there is a problem with people being way too competitive, and seeing smart new comers as threatening. Most bullies are co workers, not managers, in my experience.

Exactly. They team up with managers and convince you're a problem.

True, it's often lateral and the bullies focus on attacking characteristics of the victims more than their work. They attempt to manage their victims in as leverage to climb the hierarchy - pseudo leadership that's unfortunately mistaken for being commendable.
Kept interrupting and aggressing these newcomers with fine leadership!! They need to also become narcissists someday if they want to stand a chance.

this is so accurate. I got nominated for employee of the month at my first job and my coworkers all turned against me. They already disliked me, but that really made them snap. They threw away my personal belongings, harassed me, and spread rumors

I'm a new Teachers Assistant. I've been at my job for two weeks now. And last Friday a teacher said, "Use your big girl voice" to me. I wanted to punch a wall. I have a naturally kind of quiet voice and am bullied for it. My boss said I did a great job still at work.

The 'ignoring' type of bullying resonates. There was me thinking I'm taking it too seriously. Oh, I was bullied in a scandinavian country, people are just too shy and scared of conflict to bring it up;.

I have worked many jobs before and my last one I had to leave due to the slackers running the mental asylum during the back scenes. It's real. I had people trying to get me fired on my last day of work, in order to put dirt on me and prevent me from coming back in the future.
Think of it like this: let's put the final nail in his or her coffin.
I had people tell me to stop talking about them and I look at them, like what? What are you talking about? Never did. There are kliqs that force out others.

Ric Flair These workers are doing this now, they are trying to get me introuble; leaving when there is lots of work to be done. They heard I am about to leave but don't know when so they are doing this to me now.
What they don't know is that I ain't going nowhere just so they can get introuble. Idiots have no idea I am on to all of them. I am the best worker there and they all know it, none of them can work as fast as I can.

I have witnessed bullying in the work place & have been literally flabergasted that managers can stand by, watch & do nothing. It is so pathetic. When I'm in a position of management to deal with such behavior, I will definitely address it. To any one being bullied, my suggestion is to confront the bully head on when they verbally or physically attack; & don't back down. Ask them, "who are YOU talking to?" & when they reply "you", slowly, firmly & loudly ask, "What are you talking about?" (to get clarification as to what really may be behind their behavior), or simply blurt out, "No You Are NOT! 'name' " "YOU ARE NOT TALKING TO ME, so I suggest you get back to work 'name' & stop bothering me!". If they continue advancing, don't back down & don't allow them to touch you. If they do, tell them, "Get your hands off of me! 'name' !" & use their name loud & clear. Good luck. If they touch you, report it immediately, stop all work activity & report it. Get on the phone with management, their boss/manager, the next boss/manager & the next boss/manager until someone other than you tells the perpetrator to stop. Do not resume work until the perpetrator has been spoken to by someone other than you. Then, document all parties involved & exactly what happened & what was said & submit it to HR & the corporate office if you must. Good luck.

A story: I was a supervisor, but her subtle aggressiveness, harassment and bullying was relentless. The HR department was afraid of her aggressiveness and tendency for thinking irrationally. Ultimately they had no choice but to acknowledge, support, and dismiss the pain that she was causing dozens of other employees because the company feared the possibility of a loose cannon going off.

    • @ricflair2221

I worked 7 years with a company and two new hires come in and demand this and that, right away. My boss was about to leave and didn't care at that point. We also got a new boss, but the new hires got to kiss her rear in order to slack behind the scenes, like the mental asylum.
So what does someone with 7 years experience do? Put up their slack and do their work of the last remaining year of my job. And there's a new contract coming up. I didn't want to get caught being near those people as they could get me fired, as they tried TWICE towards getting me terminated.
And they form in numbers to their advantage, talk about a scheme. I know I would have to follow that plan in my new position.
So one day, I tried being a slack myself to test out the waters and guess what? I got written up, whether real or not, the new boss said you're being written up because you're too slow. So I go back to my usual self.
As I view the others (with 1 minute to spare) I see them on their phones, while I pass by and I say to myself... How is this possible?? Insane....

Can't report it because HR will try to frame you, office mobbing may ensue, and HR will terminate the victim and try to get them to sign a severance agreemtn to prevent victim from trying to sue - unfortunately in the U.S. you cannot sue for bullying - the victim suffers from the agressive hostile behavior, threats and then they are falsely framed, and then they loose their job, income, and health benefits.

I have just started a new job, and it's been 1 week of training. A guy sitting next to me, OUT OF NOWHERE punched me in the arm as the idiot trainer was giving a lesson. I got so startled and turned around, punched him in the arm back and raised my voice on him. The idiot trainer didn't take it serious (unprofessional lady) and he's like "I was just joking, I didn't hit that hard." .. she backs him up going "oh com on, he didn't hit that hard." .. and I'm in SHOCK because 1. Who the hell is this guy thinking he can do that to a girl??? And 2. What's up with the freaking trainer's reaction??? He afterwards apologized and stuff, but .. that really upset me. I wonder what to do and how to feel..

I worked with this person who just got hired abt 3 yrs ago. I have been working 33 yrs at my job as a registered nurse . we are federal employees at the VA. Well this person made false and abusive complaints about people in the work area, to HR. This person reported the supervisors (2) who both had been working 25 yrs to HR 8 times. This person reported me and others 4 times to HR. Then lied and said that I as watching porn on the computer, to HR. the day she said I was on vacation in eroupe.lol.. This person lied again and said that I said that she was stealing meds.. and I did not ... she even told the HR that she had a witness, when HR came to me .. I said who ever she says that is a witness , bring them I did not.and do not know what you are talking about. well HR interviewed the witness and the witness who she clearly lied about said .. I never said such a thing.. who said I said that ... it seemed that the person thought HR would take her word without talking to witness.. well I was tried of this person and wrote to HR requesting an investigation , this women lied and made false complaints against people all the time. And she was trying to make problems for people that had been on the job 18 - 33 yrs before she even came. ....she is sad.... HR investigated.

My friend and my supervisor were the problems in my previous position of work. My friend got all butthurt over the fact that I wouldn't come to play in the sandbox with him anymore, so now I found something new that I wanted to use to improve my life, and instead of him being happy for me, he tried to derail me, any way he could, whether that be snide remarks, proper insults towards my character, or my appearance, or whether that be him throwing my past in my face, or telling other people my personal stuff, without my permission. My supervisor used to undermine and condescend me on a regular basis, kind of like he was on a mission to put me in my place, an example of this was when a courier, who wanted to break the rules to enter a site I used to work at, I refused him entry, and he went off on one, was exceptionally disresptful and rude, and ultimately caused trouble for everyone else concerned. I then spoke to my supervisor in regards to the situation, especially seeing as it was the second time this happened, and instead of him backing me, so I can report it, he put the kibosh on it instead, which means he is free to do it again.
I wasn't really mentally strong enough to handle it the best way I could have done, but I did what I thought was the BEST way to handle this situation - my manager came to me with a new position, away from the site, I took it. But the ghosts are still in my mind, and I am still mulling over how I should've handled it, mind you....

Life is short, speak your peace respectfully but firmly and if that gets you fired, so be it - so be it. It's not impossible to get another job, perhaps some really are a cesspool of health problems in the years to come. Your job should be work, not an interruption to your quality of life or worse yet, will to live life to its fullest. You might hate your job sometimes but if you're a violent wreck about it everyday all day - time for positive change. Is the effort growing you or crushing your soul?

The work bully in my workplace is a woman, she has a high status position. She works a different shift than myself.
Her tactics are leaving criticizing notes aimed directly to me, not the crew I work with as a whole.
She raises her voice (yelling) at me in front of clients/patients who are under severe health pressure(stroke patients/dementia) when she accuses me of not doing my job correctly. The result of her actions is patient(s) become negatively triggered.
The staff bows to her under fear of losing their job. I on the other hand stand up for myself and demand respect/defend my work related decisions when I am confronted with her narcissistic behavior.
It took one episode of bullying for me to speak out to my employer. The bullying continued and I immediately spoke with my employer again.
To make a long story short: My employer sees my professional work ethics and received my point of view openly during a discussion we had recently.
Resulting from our discussion was the authority to dismiss her aggressive and discriminatory notes/verbal abuse altogether.
I sent a letter to the bully with a message I feel will diffuse her bullying. If she continues then now I know how to handle the issue/her abuse on my end like a boss.

Just do your job and stop expecting the workplace to be filled with joy and serenity. Act like an adult and quit crying like a bunch of dammed babies when things and people are hard on you. Find another job or wait out the A-hole who caused the problem because if it is truly about them, they won’t be there for long. Oh and there is a difference between being micro-managed and being unfairly treated. It also depends on the type of business and nature of the work. Is a fireman going to be counseled for yelling at a co-worker who is slow at getting the equipment up to the fire? This is all unqualified generalization based on weak data and inconclusive opinion of “experts” and they know it is. It’s the next wave of employment compliance training industry boondoggle following the huge one that started in the 80s with mandatory sexual harassment training. Adults not able to handle interaction with other adults and boom!....New training industry created complete with experts and anecdotal evidence. This is the main cause of the push to automate and replace humans in the workplace or at least is one of the additional benefits of doing so. Way to go!
