    SONIC ACTS BIENNIAL 2022
16 October 2022 - Singelkerk, Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Composed of a series of concerts at Singelkerk - a beautiful, 1600s church - Breathtune focused on deep listening and nonlinear performance. The programme stretched the idea of the contemporary by (literally) breathing new life into silenced or forgotten sound practices, from flutes to self-made instruments and organ pipes.
Lukas De Clerck, performing as Bloedneus en de Snuitkever, produced acoustic drone music with his own version of the 2000-year-old Greek aulos, a double-reeded pipe. Irish experimental sound artist Áine O’Dwyer presented a selection of pieces for pipe organ and voice inspired by her research into monastic chanting. Performing with self-made instruments inspired by South American traditional and ancient artefacts, Ale Hop and Tatiana Heuman premiered ‘Near and Remote Memory Activation Practices’. Kali Malone followed with a new and immersive performance of ‘Does Spring Hide Its Joy’, created for a trio of sine waves, electric guitar by Stephen O’Malley and cello by Lucy Railton. The piece is a study in deep listening and nonlinear durational performance with a focus on non-traditional tuning and beating interference patterns.
Sonic Acts Biennial 2022 took place at various locations in Amsterdam from 30 September to 23 October, interweaving an exhibition, sound performances and discourse programme, accompanied by artist presentations, workshops, excursions and more. The Leaving Traces weekend programme brought together international artists and thinkers for talks, presentations and workshops throughout the day, while the evenings featured performances, concerts and films by a lineup of exciting and pioneering sound artists.
