- FFXI has some of the best zones of any mmo I've ever played, but there are some favorites that do stand out. In this video I get into my Top 5 Favorite Zones from the original Launch!

Qufim during double light is def one of the best looking original zones.
Overall, I’d say Rolanberry. The music is still one of my favorites, and my first run to Jeuno happened in Rolanberry at night

Totally agree with your list and definitely felt the same way the first time I entered Behemoth's Dominion.
Another thing I loved/hated about Quffim Island was that the partying spots were hotly contested. Some people would just encroach on your leveling spot or push you out of the pond area.
Valkurm introduced you to noobs, while Quffim introduced you to the more cut-throat players.

I LOVE your videos! I miss this game soo bad. I personally enjoyed Rolanberry Fields the best. Esp since there were tiny cottages around the vineyards. I think thats where I logged my character off for the last time.
Rollenberry Fields ;/ Talk about nostalgia melancholy days gone by ;/ Wandering htrough the zone while waiting for invites to Crawler's nest, the music, the rain and evening times. Such a beautiful place.Hailed from the ghettos of good ol bastok...so the rfreshing change of Konstacht Highlands in contrast to the rocky landscapes of North Gustaberg always brings a smile upon reflection .
Personally my favorite zone in this category would be Castle O. the Yagguto strong whole. With the trap door and hidden passwords and all the stuff that says these beastman are smart and know how to build a fortress.
That "Spine" in Qufim Island (also viewable in Meriphataud, and possibly other areas) isn't really a fossil or spine of any living creature. It's actually a conduit from one of each of the crags (Mea, Dem, and Holla) which transfers ... uh... some kind of energy to/from Delkfutt's Tower. It's been years since I've played but realizing that blew my mind back in the day.
FFXI truly had one of the best worlds in MMORPGs. I hope to Altana that the mobile port isn't going to suck... *crosses fingers*

Keep these videos up as they are great! I played for 10 years and quit 3 years ago, but these videos feed that nostalgia gap I feel from time to time. I like that you added the one caveat that you didn't want to add the starting zones to this list because I'm sure those zones are special to the player depending on what city they chose all those years ago. I really enjoyed La Theine plateau much like you preferred Konschtat Highlands. Some of my best early memories were there soloing on my warrior or paladin before begrudgingly making my way to the dunes for a long party wait.

Hit level 20 time to try and make it to jeuno.
My favorite classic zone was Castle Zhavl Bailey ( I probably spelled that wrong). That place was huge, was eerie as hell, and dangerous. The ominous holes to fall down...the danger they would lead to, and all those sinister evil eyes and demons throughout the place. Yeah...I hated it and loved it all the same.

Top 5 worst zones would be fun
No Ronfaure? To me, the look and feel of the zone combined with the music -- possibly the most iconic song from FFXI -- made it really feel like the true "default" world map zone in the game. Like if I listen to all the FF overworld map themes, Ronfaure is what I consider the representative for XI. I'd also give props to Windurst for, if rather overly large and complex, serving as a truly unique and comfy MMO city zone, especially for the time of its inception.
I fully support grouping la theine and konschtat because really they are the same and it would just cause another issue between bastokans and sandorians. Glad you kept the peace.
no love for tahrongi canyon lol I'm so sad. I started out in Windurst though, and I absolutely loved Tahrongi (sue me). Meriphataud(sp?) was also good.

Everyone pretty much considered Zilart as part of the Original Zones, haha. Ahh Valkurm Dunes and Qufim Island, the first levels of hell that everybody goes through. Getting to the camps was half the work, lol. I miss those days~ I think you should've mentioned the three starting PvE zones though. They all really capture the history of all three starting nations and transitions very well when you exit/enter the zones. Btw, I don't feel sorry for killing all those rabbits in Ronfaure :P

Maze of Shakhrami - this was the first spot for Windurstian's to party up on the Carbuncle server at NA release. Maze Makers and Goblins. So much better than Dunes
Lots of memories leveling low level jobs in Ghelsba back in the day but it always used to fascinate me how Ghelsba Outpost broke the symmetry with the other two cities. Palborough Mines led straight to Waughroon Shrine and Giddeus led straight to Balga's Dais. Ghelsba Outpost had another two zones attached in Fort Ghelsba and Yughott Grotto before leading to Horlais Peak! It feels to me like there was a lot of effort put into this area of the game, or perhaps these areas were built first in the early development?

Quifim is nostalgic to me for waiting 5 hours for a group one day and the whole cowering on the lake at night from the much more dangerous mobs with a bunch of other group.

Back before I knew where to find the Dunes I had my first party in the Palborough Mines. I was a warrior with sword and shield lol, other guy was a Rdm. I didn't figure out how to get to the dunes until like level 15. I don't think many of us knew what we were doing back then.
spent 5 solid years of my life in this game. Super fun times, emotional and lots of highs.
As a Mithra starter, both Sarutabarutas will hold a special place to me

Hello, I'm wondering what software you are using to capture your FFXI gameplay? What software do you use for editing?
Worst zone? Garliage Shitadel.
Me and my younger brother pronounced it Gar-la-tige citadel, why? No clue whatsoever but it holds a unique memory, just like every single area.

garlaige was definitely a crappy zone. I hated having to get 3 other players. Eldieme was also a pain. I think those areas aren't as bad now because of the QoL changes they've put in, but during vanilla FFXI and even up to Abyssea I think, those areas were the worst.
If your talking about doors, Eldieme is probably the worst. I never really had much issue with Garlaige or Quicksand. Not to mention that some of Eldieme was only accessible via a gigantic detour. Original zones only I'd say Eldieme, simply due to doors and blood aggro everywhere. The gimmicky doors were novel at the time with tons of players and a tight community but I'm really glad they made workarounds.

Konschtat Highlands and La Theine Plateau were not a mirror zones, they were not even close in their layout. Only thing they had in common were they were both close to starting cities that need to travel through to get to the Dunes.
Haha ya I guess, I just always felt like spiritually they were very similar. Tahrongi always felt like the oddman out

Was rolanberry fields a bazaar hub for you guys on Odin as well? In Asura for several years it was the place where all the bazaar/afk players gathered, It felt like the farmers market, a nice place to shop.

Sauromugue Champlaign (sp) on Titan was bazaar city
On Seraph it was Rollenberry but on Ramuh it was Battalia Downs. Was weird to see the former entrance empty.
This is a pretty good list. Defiantly was confined to where most of your time was spent early game.

The goblins didn't always patrol the beaches in the dunes, be interesting if you also threw in fun facts like that with your information about the zones.

I remember they had to put the Goblin Bounty Hunters in the game to combat RTM fishing bots.
I've always felt like the Rolanberry fields zone music was deceptive in the sense that it comes off as peaceful and friendly, when in actuality the zone is very hostile and dangerous towards low level players, particularly ones who are on their way to jeuno for the first time.

So I totally agree with this list, but so many are Zilart! I had to take a bunch off the list, I didn't even realize
lmao I was casting -ga spells on my first job in the Dunes (BLM, obviously) and the party kept saying "wtf!?" I didn't get it was AoE, it was just my new powerful spell... Luckily my RL homie was PL'n us and he sent me a tell. That was like 2004 or something.

How about a top 5 wasted zones? Zones that were either interesting or beautiful but there was nect to no reason to visit them

If we're talking worst city Windy definitely takes the prize. What a stupid city. It took ages to run around and do quests there. I mean if a starter city has a single zone so large that it covers two maps there's something wrong.
