The Kumasi International Airport is set to be commissioned and operationalised, the Minister for Transport, Hon. Kwaku Ofori Asiamah, has informed Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
His Majesty is expected to lead the commissioning on a date yet to be agreed together with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
The Minister during a courtesy call on Monday, April 22, 2024 told Otumfuo that Messrs Contracta Construction UK Ltd had handed over the facility to the government per agreement after completing the new passenger terminal building.
He, however, indicated that the extension of the runway is still ongoing.
“I am here with the Management and Board. We were working on the terminal and runway at the airport. By the grace of God, we have completed the terminal and the contractor has handed over to us. We now have to operationalise it. However, work is still ongoing on the runway. We had to come and update our Lord about it. We also plead that he leads the Commissioning when the time is due, inspect it and unveil the name together with the President.”
He characterized the facility as one of the most advanced airports in West Africa with certification by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
He reflected on the intervention of His Majesty which compelled the President to seek alternative funding to complete the project which had stalled since 2022.
Throwing more light on the issue of the runway, the Minister explained, “The Engineers told us there is the need to extend the runway to accommodate Boeing 737. Persons living around would be moved out.”
He used the occasion to thank Otumfuo for intervening to cause the resumption of work on the project.
“Thank you for your intervention which the President heeded to make way for the continuation and completion of the facility.”
The Managing Director of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), Mrs. Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, for her part said Management would take a working visit to the facility for testing on April 23, 2024.
“We will run through everything to see if the terminal is functioning as it should.”
His Majesty in his remarks highlighted the economic benefits the operationalization of the facility would reap and urged the Minister to take proactive measures in engaging international airlines.
“This airport is important to me because jobs would be created through it. It will facilitate the importation of fruits produced in the region as well as facilitate trips. Foreigners would take flights directly from here. It will facilitate the trips of people living in the Ahafo and Bono Regions.”
“Airline companies must be engaged to operate here when the time is due. 60% of travellers pass through Ashanti Region. The British Airways and all other international airlines must come to operate here. This will create jobs and facilitate development.”

Point of correction, it is not only delta that has straight flights to Ghana. United Airlines also has straight flights from Dulles Airport in Virginia to Ghana.
The first time I have watched your programme to an end...Engage more experts like this and you will get more guys on board for this channel.
Kumasi International Airport has not started operation. There will not be any problem once it begins operation. All is needed is to get more passengers. The airlines themselves will be happy to get to Kumasi provided it has the number. Then as the airlines get increased the airport authorized would have to extend the tarmac, apron etc.
Hello guys. I am watching you live from paris.
I don’t know why people think major contributing factor for international airport is how big or small runway is . If that’s the case , why is Tamale and Ho still lagging behind to get international and local flights respectively.
Mostly international status depends on the patronage of airlines . An international airline wouldn’t mind patronizing Ho airport if they see that they have numbers .
Ebi ignorance...They don't read enough
Exactly, it's about the numbers, especially those who don't travel but stay and try to peddle rumours. I believe that eventually, the Prempeh l lnternational Airport will meet the required passenger volume.
Please point of correction, United Airlines also flies from Dulles Airport to Kotoka Airport in Accra Ghana
The fact that small size of Kumasi airport and the two security check points are ok. The seven Flights check in desk are enough....we should understand that Flights are scheduled for departure from different times. Check in are done even online six hours earlier before departure. The current machines for check in are modern ones and could process luggage faster.
Though bigger commercial airlines could not land at the moment, it's necessary to extend the runway to 3000 for the future bigger planes to land and expansion.
Kotoka used to have only two gates. Even Heathrow T4 used to have only 2 check in desk for Ghana.
United airline also fly direct to Ghana
COVTV please which type of Egyptair landed Kumasi International Airport. Please find out and come and tell us for us to know whether 737, 777, 787 please find out now I want to know
Nana is doing well. Some are giving misguided information. what is essential for every airport is the number. The rest will be taken care of by the airlines. All you need is your destinations. The travel agencies and online bookings will offer the options for your connected airports. EGNew York to Kumasi. Certainly you will be connected to get there.
Get the passengers. The runway, tarmac apron etc will be extended and expanded to meet the demands.
He is saying fact
You have to make transit
Yes because 737 is just a city hopper it doesn't go far and is not comfortable to travel in for a long time is really uncomfortable and too small
Cov TV you are good but you talk too much please go to Ghana airport company for more information
