What is the purpose of going into the gutters on the turns? Doesn't that slow you down? And the chance of hitting rocks?

I've been watching the Trikes and Carts for 2-3 years now and on Trikes they have no tread on the rear tires and so when going at high speeds they try to use the rain gutters on corners as it can help to keep the trike from sliding all they way across the track. Its dangerous though because sometimes there are rocks or cement in the rain gutters that can damage a wheel.
