I found that changing my way of pouring had the most significant effect on my brew. (assuming that you already have a decent grinder, coffee, and water in the first place)
In my experience, pouring close to the bed works better with shorter/smaller drippers. Same with center pours since you can more easily combine it with a close, slow pour to control the rate of flow. As you noted, the kettle makes a difference as well. Some are better than others depending on how you're wanting to pour.
