    This is a little video of Lucy's first ever SUP foil session! Lucy is a competent SUP surfer but has never stepped on a foil before. The conditions were perfect with a 1 foot clean wave coming in over a sand bank.Remember that there are loads of ways to get into SUP foiling and this is not an instructional video. Going behind a boat first would be a good introduction to getting up on a SUP foil. But Lucy very much just wanted to give it a go!

    Thanks for this video. I've been following the rise of foiling for 3 years , but it was not until I watched this video a few times that I actually understood what it means to get the foil to pop up and 'fly' a person. Thanks! BTW I do notice that while Lucy may never have foiled before, she appears to be a very highly advanced SUP surfer or SUP racer - she has a very fast take off with the paddle, and she is able to paddle in pure surf stance without issues.

      Hey Marvin, Thanks for your comments and glad you found the video useful. Yes Lucy is pretty handy on a SUP and is very used to paddling in surf stance. Thats the reason I could give her a pretty small board for her first session... in at the deep end. But she did enjoy it. A longer board would be better for riders with less paddle skills. Happy foiling Reuben

    This is so cool! Lucy rode that wave so good! My partner and I just preordered our first SUPs, we went with the RED 10’6”, and upgraded to the carbon fibre paddles so feel pretty lucky to be starting out with great kit. Watching this made me so excited to learn with my partner (and I’ve learned so much from this video, like leaning back slightly as you ride over the wave). Do you have more learning vids? Obvs you two are pros, but tips for beginners are always helpful :) I’ll have a look anyway but thanks for sharing your trips, you really inspire us to just go for it!

      Yep that will be one of the SUPboarder team. We are all local to the area. It's not the easiest area for foiling because we haven't got any river mouth or offshore peaks but if you find the right tide with a nice little bank it can work really well. But theres plenty of space to find an empty bump. See you on the water. Thanks Reuben

    Hi you two, I have just bought a 5.5 Gong inflatable Hipe Foil And board at 145liters. Do you think this would be possible to learn to sUP foil on or too short. I have been Supping on a 7.6. Mainly bought to go into wing foiling. But just wondered what you thought of the length to SuP foil? Thanks for all your videos. Love them all!

    • @SUPboardermag
      @SUPboardermag  3 роки тому

      Hey Angela. It will be possible but of course as you have suggested because of the length it will be harder to get yourself onto the waves.
      It's definitely worth trying and giving it a go but you will probably want to try and find the right wave.
      When using any smaller foil board in the surf it will mean you will have to take off later and will be closer to the critical section of the wave (steeper part). So it might be easier for you to try and start in on smaller waves or even paddle into the broken white water which will take you further away from the steeper part of the wave but give you enough speed to lift up onto the foil. Just stay away from fast dumping waves and try and find yourself a nice slow wave or a wave which is just about to break.
      This is even more important if you are starting off with a board with less glide. I hope that makes sense? I think we will definitely have to do a video series of taking your foil board into the waves for the first time. Thanks Reuben

    • @SUPboardermag
      @SUPboardermag  3 роки тому

      Using a longer board will give you more glide which will allow you to get onto the wave earlier. But when you were on the foils having a longer board will require you to trim slightly differently compared to the shorter boards. But for many people having a go at Sup foiling with boards around 7 1/2' to 8' is an easier introduction to the sport.Thanks Reuben

      SUPboarder Thank you. Would you recommend this as a first Foil Set up? (I’m an intermediate SUP rider on a 125ltr board)

    • @SUPboardermag
      @SUPboardermag  5 років тому +2

      @@algyk This setup we found was very easy to get us really foiling. We have used other boards and foiled before but the JP board and the Axxis foils really made it easy. We also use the Neil Pryde Foil too and that one is easy to use as well. If you are after a board with more stability go for the bigger JP. But as you can see in the video this was the very first time Lucy had even stood on the board, and she did pretty well. For the size of the board there are pretty stable. I love this setup and I can foil in waves only knee high. But wouldn't want to foil with this front wing size in anything bigger than shoulder high. You will get too much lift. But you can always buy and smaller front wing and put it on the same foil. Hope that helps . Thanks Reuben

    Imho learning with foot straps is very risky.

    • @SUPboardermag
      @SUPboardermag  5 років тому +2

      Hi James. I found the straps really helpful at knowing where to position my feet. And think having a windsurfing background made the footstraps undaunting. I know others who have tried it without footstraps found it really hard to keep the board balanced when learning. Personal choice I guess. Lucy / SUPboarder

    • @tonythetiger256
      @tonythetiger256 5 років тому

      Yes the foot straps can easily break your legs,especially of you fall over your toes going one way and the board goes the other.
