I appreciate all the work you put into your videos, as a casual player, its nice to watch this and get a good understanding and get quick builds to use, thanks again
Very helpful to casual me. I had assumed I didn't have time to learn greatsword or any new weapon for that matter. These perfectly produced videos reduce my study time and encourage immediate adaptation. I can spend 15 minutes now with background and understanding from DukeSloth and feel confident to take on level cap mobs. I'm comfortable with my current weapon combos and always wish I'd take the time from farming to try something new. An outstanding resource here that I no longer need to wish i had.
9:26 I honestly feel there is no way someone should give up on Keen Posture if they are using the Onslaught tree at all. Crit on demand is insane and allows you to trigger your Keen Speed, your Keenly Empowered or Keenly Jagged at will.
If you are a tank with the mentality of "my job is to hold agro and not die, any DPS or CCs I do are bonuses" then GS is a great compliment to SnS in a fully heavy tank spec and gearing. You would have 2 aoe AND 2 single target high threat generators (plus some other points like the extra threat from SnS light attack chain when speced into it) and tons of survivability points. On top of that GS has some decent leeching points for sustainability as the secondary to the tank SnS. I've played with it that way on PTR with great success. Honestly it's kind of OP easy mode when tanking with that combo. Now messing with a combo of main wep SnS tank spec with a leeching dps with counter spec on the GS for when you aren't having to mitigate big hits and/or have the chance to contribute to the group's damage output. GS as a main tank wep is, as you say, meh. But as an OH, it's fantastic in pve. Keep in mind this is all true even without the various ways of complimenting or buffing these skills with Runeglass combos :) Happy hunting all!!
Love seeing your new world videos coming out again DukeSloth! I've been keeping up with them. Been considering getting back into New World for a while now.
There's a guy on UA-cam named Atlas Fishmo who I saw going heavy armor with Sword/shield and Greatsword with all defiance abilities. I've been trying it out but I've been really struggling, at least in PVP, with getting kited and just melted by ranged attacks due to lack of strong mobility. I guess it's more of a bleed/heal build but maybe relentless rush would be a better alternative.
Just watched it, I think I can see the problem. All of his fights were duels (pretty much the only option on PTR), so the enemy were intending to engage in the fight. That's not the case in other forms of PvP, where mages/healers will just ignore tanks and run away/kite. So yeah, while I like the idea of a full right side build, I think it's difficult to use effectively against ranged enemies. Calamity counter often simply doesn't do much vs ranged and Roaring Rupture is extremely telegraphed and easy to avoid.
@@DukeSloth I didn't find it being an issue on PTR at least, though I only did duels. I'd simply heavy attack to get into onslaught stance and stay in it untill I used one of the other 2 abilities, and then back into onslaught.
May I ask how you play it? Like more bow or GS? I'm just about to get back into the game and havent used the GS yet but plan to do what youre doing. Also, if you dont mind, what abilities are you using for the GS? Thank you in advance :)
@@LibertyOrDeath87 I’m not home atm so don’t remember offhand what abilities I use, but for PvE I typically initiate the fight with the bow and swap to gs when things get to close or if I get swarmed. I do know I use the counter ability on gs
There are arguments on Thwarting Strike with 300str vs Trenchant Strike with even str/dex. I believe Thwarting is better because one-third of GS dps comes from abilities (per your dps chart from another video). Trenchant Strike on the other hand will give 10% more dmg than Thwarting but only on fully charged heavy attack. Dmg difference between 300str 100dex and 200str 200dex is 2.5%. Thwarting Strike will more than compensate this dmg loss. For PvP, even str/dex might be better just for the 150dex perk. But the more I look at this weapon, it’s for PvE or Wars. It’s not built for OPR or Arena bcs of its poor tracking.
Only crosscut on onslaugh has grit, the other 2 are on defiance side. While in onslaugh stage you pretty much can do full heavy attack really fast so i think spamming heavy attack deal more consistant dps.
I've been tanking with the GS and it has been quite good, but it is a bit more complicated than the Warhammer. It has no stuns, but has staggers, pulls, bleeds, heals (not as much heals as Warhammer though) and cleansing of debuffs which are quite handy if you watch for debuffs. I think the WH is better for a fast switch and dump abilities playstyle, where as the GS can be used to tank with for a while. If you are fighting single targets, perfect blocks basically match a tower Shield block and calamity and steadfast strike are great to keep your stamina full... More complicated to play, but I have been enjoying it a lot. Recently tanked Ennead with only the GS alone and it was quite fun
This was a great video. I just picked up the greatsword since i wanted to be like Guts from Berserk haha. But having trouble with what secondary weapon to use, I'm just so hooked on the musket
Guess it would depend on the pace of combat you’re looking for. What exact role you want to play in PVE/PVP 🤷🏻♂️ I am guilty of liking the musket just because I like to shoot from afar.
I feel like nobody on my server really appreciates the combo of Plagued Strikes and Trenchant Recovery on GS on my server. I caught one with Keen as the 3rd perk yesterday for under 30k. Are these two perks not bis for pvp? So easy to land heavys with GS it just seems like the obvious bis would be Plagued Strikes, Trenchant Recovery, & an elemental attunement. Am i off on this?
Is there any setting that has to be changed/enabled or requirements that have to be met(certain lvl on my character or on the Greatsword) to get the crosshair to change when in either stance(X on onslaught and circle in defiant) and also to get the red and blue glow for the respective stances? I’m using the Greatword on live server and I’m not getting any indicator when switching stances, I know stances are switching cause I can see the difference in damage and the heavy attack speed but the indicators seem to not be working for me
Hmm that's odd. It should be doing that be default without any prerequisites, might wanna submit a ticket/bug report. Also maybe verify your game files on steam?
@@DukeSloth Okay that’s good to know that it should be doing it by default, I tried verifying the Integrity of the game files on steam, I even uninstalled the game and re-installed it and nothing worked, I even set all my setting back to default to see if maybe I had enabled or changed something that might cause it to not work but that didn’t work either, I guess it is just bugged, I will submit a bug report, thank you for the reply :)
Wow great video is there anyway to make the great sword work as healer? Would I take more skills in the right skill tree? I’m so confused and still trying to figure things out I’m nee
You wouldn't be full tank then. If you're taking more damage to do more damage, you're completely failing your role as a tank. your focus isn't damage at all
I don't think it has completely equal scaling, I found that It had more damage when I had 250str and 100dex rather than the inverse. But that was in the PTR so maybe that changed.
@@kirchhoff7049 that would be a valid argument if I didn't imply that I also tried 100str 250dex, when I said "rather than the inverse". I would still get the bonuses either way but still ended up with higher damage investing into more str. But again that was the PTR and I just started over fresh in live so can't really test it.
Until people wear light with broken perks while holding a "heavy" weapon.. There's nothing to talk about. Really.. They should add more weight to weapons or to some weapons. Greataxe, sns, greatsword, Warhammer should be so heavy on its own if you're wearing light it will put you into heavyweight. Rapier is ok with light. Hatchet, spear and blunder should be medium if you're wearing light. The rapier and the rest of the ranged stuff are totally fine for light. Only this little adjustment would help a lot to balance the PVP. Because as of right now everyone except a few newbies wearing light, close to non-stop fortify, speed, and damage because they run 50 con, and their stamina bar is endless. (But I think there should be a touch bigger difference in damage negation too.)
You mentioned some GS combo builds but I got the feeling you were talking from a PvP aspect. So far in your opinion what would combo best with the GS in PvE? I heard hatchet and GS was doing really well in the PTR testing. Your opinion?
I think Hatchet is a great secondary weapon because it has a range pull and a very quick rend! Also works very nicely in terms of str+dex scaling. Same is also true for spear between its multiple rends and bleeds. Hammer can also be good if you're just looking for CC and rends in PvE specifically! And ofc SnS is an option too!
I'm no expert, but in my testing, blunderbuss pairs with gs extremely well. Bb has a net that can slow and hurt a target when fully talented. Bb also has a chain which can be used to pull you forward towards your target. Both Bb and GS scale on strength. Bb has less range than other ranged weapons but is arguably better for the most common ranged weapon needs (turkeys and rabbits). Bb ranged artillery rounds are a great way to open an engagement with a group, followed by GS Relentless rush. That's a strong 1-2 punch that can usually be finished with a GS cross cut. Anything left standing after that is generally a single high hp target, ready to eat a full GS Skyward slash. :) Other pairings work as well, but the synergy of GS/BB is hard to beat.
@@occlonmenticsgamingomg9979 Interesting. I didnt consider BB because the videos I have watched about where these various weapons lie on performance said BB was not good at all. I will look into it. Thanks.
