I do not recommend meetu at the very beginning. Skin contact with the instrument is very important to know the level of pressure exerted to extract quality sound. However, people whose skin lining is thin , may need the meetu within a few months of learning.
Carnatic Music is a highly evolved art form. The challenge has always been lack of clarity in explaining the concepts in a simple form, so that beginners and students can understand it easily and well. Students give up once they are unable to follow and connect all the dots to make the full story. Using a Veena to demonstrate concepts becomes highly visual too. This series together with Varnam series by Nadayoga is a great initiative and a welcome change in approach. Thank you for sharing.
@@malaviswanathan The entire music community and the eco system thrives, if and only if, there is a huge following of Carnatic Music by large group of people who understand music. Thank you madam for the video on metronome and thalam practice. If i am following it correctly for adi thalam every drutham sound i have to also pluck thalam strings ? Please advise.
A very good question Shantha. If you have a natural flair for rhythm and flow, tala strings is the most appropriate way to keep talam. Before these apps came in ,this is how we kept talam.. Your lesson must be played perfectly with a uniform flow and the tala string struck at 1,5 and 7 th beat for all 3 speeds of Adi talam. You have to mentally keep a tab on the notes and positions of the talam. With good focus and consistent hard work the tala sense gets shaped. But in my experience as a teacher, I have realised that with so much going on at the early stages of learning, students focus on talam stays low and eventually leads to a struggle which later becomes a handicap. When there is help in the digital platform it is advisable to use it and strengthen talam at an early stage along with tapping the tala string. By the time you come to varnams the dependence on the app reduces.
Do you recommend using a meetu for complete beginners or perhaps start using once we have the strumming mastered?
I do not recommend meetu at the very beginning. Skin contact with the instrument is very important to know the level of pressure exerted to extract quality sound. However, people whose skin lining is thin , may need the meetu within a few months of learning.
