Wellll, was born in SB, but lived elsewhere during childhood/high school....After the Navy, moved back to go to school on GI Bill....Stayed for 35 yrs and loved it.....Never thought I'd leave, but after retirement in 2004, I did just that (ex-wife got the house 10 yrs prior, so nothing holding me there)....Love tropical climate, so moved to SW FL....Bought a 1,400sq ft dblwide on a canal on Sarasota Bay....66' of seawall with two boat lifts....Recently checked apt rents in SB....Found a 1bdrm, 1bath 688sq ft apt with street parking only for the exact same cost as my 1st&2nd mort, prop tax, park fee, insurances per month home on the water.....Move back?....Nahhhhh

I wish it was not true but I had to cross the border. An Ophthalmologist said advanced glaucoma was the cause of my blurred vision. Now, unable to work, within sixty days my annual income dropped from 45,000 to 19,000, thanks for your generosity, social security disability. Forced out of my hometown after 53 years, if it were not for my brother's offer to rent a unit in his duplex, I would be down at Sterns Wharf under a palm tree drinking beer from a paper bag. Yet, that reads better than the reality of the abyss I now feel will be the death of me. After a month in hell, I asked my brother why people were lighting firecrackers so often when July was months away? He calmly answered, "it's not firecrackers, it's gunfire." WTF?
In the last three years, I saw three mid-day drug raids, one shooting that was across the street, twice heard shootings that killed one and wounded another. My neighbor's two sons were murdered in the same year as the other (Dear God). A 220-pound female gang member jumped me and pounded my face into the sidewalk. Last year, three Pitt Bulls attacked my two dogs and me. The dogs bit at my arms as I tried to shield my dogs, though, there were people out not one person came to my aide. Gang Graffiti on garage doors of private homes, seriously?
Someone vandalized my car twice in three years. Should I mention the burglar who stole all my electronics and jewelry? I had the good fortune to drive around the corner minutes after two psychos had hacked a dog to death with machetes after an argument with its owner, I saw the dead dog lying in the gutter and the crowd that gathered around. A homeless woman knocked on my door asking if I would feed her, of course, I did and more.
Trash and weeds everywhere you look, the creek is the dumping ground for shopping carts, go figure. I uploaded a few videos to my channel (Cynthia Lynn) if you want to see for yourself why Santa Barbara isn't real.

This is classic, and very funny. And completely true. Santa Barbara really is a kind of Utopia, a paradise, it is not the real world. For better and worse. I love SB, but after a while I miss the world. :)
