The battle within to achieve Mushin, or the mind of no mind, is every martial artists greatest challenge and only comes after many years of struggle in an attempt to perfect technique and to polish the soul. If the martial artist begins to believe that he has achieved Mushin, then he has failed and must begin again. Mushin is a concept that must forever be unachievable, yet in being so, creates a Bushi.

I am the head of Sasaki-rokkaku Clans and last Iemoto of Omi-mono and Omi-koka-mono Shinobi. The captured spirit of Musashi and Kojiro are super accurate they were never enemies and sought both to learn and teach each other something greater. They were both successful in the end. Musashi simply surviving long after. Kojiro making a final point in his death while seeking honor after his clan lost so much. Sasaki became a ghost clan and his namesake caused him to seek a means of sealing a gapping wound in the philosophy of Gan Ryu. In the end Musashi understood and used the boiled down methods better. Gan Ryu later adopted the oar as a weapon to study as a result. 2 of Kojiro students lived on to continue the sacred techniques. Many do not understand Musashi studied and absorbed every art he faced off against. That's where the oar came from. His fear of the Odachi straight blade of Sasaki Budo which was utilized in the surprise and unstoppable single handed sword style of Gan Ryu kenjutsu.

@UncleAntiClaws: I was going to say something similar, but you beat me to it, and far more eloquently too. 🫡
To onlookers: Kensei Mushashi's "The Book of Five Rings" is a worthwhile and insightful read, even for those who've never held or trained with a sword.
Regrettably, I had to give up Iaiado (and numerous other martial arts and hobbies) c.1989 due to a series of unavoidable surgeries. The path of excellence remains however, for those determined to walk it.

SHINMEN Musashi no kami Fujiwara no ginshin took his name from the village Myamoto where he was born , I know at some point and I believe it was his duel with Kojiro he lost his taste for killing and refused to duel to the death from that day forward and at some point he became very disenchanted with people in general and became a recluse living in a cave where he wrote his books of strategy the five rings and on the day he finished the book he passed ;away having never known defeat or fear . In one duel he fought 31 men armed with guns ,swords ,spears and bow and arrow he slew every one of them and they never touched him apparently he used two swords and this was the origin of his ni to ichiryu technique.
The name Musashi shall never be forgotten

Musashi was very strong. But he didn't always win every battle. According to his life, it was written in the Book of Five Rings that sometimes he had to run, and come back to fight at another day. A Ronin lives a different life than a Samurai. Because they don't usually fight in a Samurai Army. Sometimes a plan fails, and they would have to Make a run for it. If it was a Samurai, he would choose to die on the battlefield if needs be.

Musashi used the lighter weighted bokken (wooden sword) for a quicker strike. The typical Japanese steel swords had 30 layers of steel making it almost indestructible but also heavier. Thus, Miusashi's strike's would always be faster than his opponents, who used steel swords.

The opening scene is totally unrealistic. People don't act with such reserve and control. A three way dance. No way.

Not now a days. But back then possible. The one holding the sword to his neck was kojiro, he wanted to defeat musashi 1 v 1 as it was the only way to prove he was the greatest to ever live. If he killed him there, then he will always be considered the second best who needed to kill musashi like a coward. Honor was kojiros way, he was even willing to risk his life to fight the entire yoshioka if it meant saving musashis life so he could have a 1 v 1
