  • In the fallout from the grooming allegations against Lorin Ashton, a.k.a. Bassnectar, which led to his subsequent retirement from music, two longtime collaborators, Mimi Page and ill.Gates, released an open letter and a personal video, respectively, detailing their acknowledgement of the victims and their stories, but also revealing their own stories about Ashton’s pattern of co-opting, passing off as his own, mis-crediting, and ultimately capitalizing on the music of smaller artists in the industry. This clout-based hegemony at the upper reaches of electronic music culture has been a topic Bill has wanted to discuss for a long time, so we were laser-focused on bringing Mimi and Dylan on to discuss. Both Mimi Page and ill.Gates are fans of the work of RAINN, which has been helping victims of abuse for 25 years, and we encourage anyone who has the means to donate to this incredible organization that helps victims directly: rainn.org

    Man, this really made me cry.
    I also respect very much that you were nice enough to let them heal together as the podcast when on.
    I honestly would've lost it and cried as well, but that may not have been helpful for them at all.
    It's very kind of you tht u r giving them this platform too. Lots of respect, Bill 💕

    I'm glad you all got together to do this, as awful as this whole thing is it's good to shed some light and accountability on the realities of this situation and issues within the larger industry.
    I hope this can be a catalyst for positive change in how the entire industry deals with people, from fans to collaborators. I think there's a lot of silent support out there, and hopefully some of it will get more vocal. I hope you know you have support, despite the crazy few.

    Lowkey I've realized all artists in some form take metas from other artists. Like on Twitch one girl started streaming from a hot tub, and then all of a sudden many others started also streaming from a hot tub. Also Imitatio is a method of stylistic imitation in literature used throughout history (Plato, Aristotle, etc.).

    • @AutoSanchezMusic
      @AutoSanchezMusic 2 роки тому +1

      I don't think plato and aristotle are really in that category. There really weren't very many philosophers to steal from but they would play with eachothers ideas and ask why they were wrong or right.

    Hey Mimi💖💝💗💘💓💞💕, for as long as we’ve loved🥰your music🎵, me and I bet a lotta others never saw this whole thing coming. I’m really sorry😢that this happened with someone you used to musically🎵collaborate with, we’re deeply saddened😥😰by Bassnectar’s unspeakable betrayal, and our hearts❤️💕go out to everyone. Especially those who’ve gone through this exact same thing.

    I knew in 2014 when Nectar said he was "too big to tour" and that "it cost too much money" that he was only about making money, and only playing festivals and curated events was a direct insult to fans that would support you playing in a dark room on a table. The audacity to claim you're bigger than Tool, Metallica, or any of these other mega bands that continuously tour for their fans. His fame warped his mind. Coming from a ex-Basshead. Use to follow the dude around everywhere. Happy to say he hasn't got a dollar from me since 2016.

    Great discussion. I'm sure we have far more "music gods" who will be outed in the wake of this. The Bassnectar community always seemed a little odd in how deeply they worship their chosen idol. It always kinda freaked me out, but I could appreciate Lorin's music and enjoyed his live sets that I was able to see. I know some fans personally who are very disillusioned by this. I think the thing to take from this is that worshiping somebody for their art or whatever they make does not mean that the person is above being a flawed, shitty human being. Celebrity worship needs to die. And I love the connection of the music industry to late-stage capitalism problems that was explained here. "Trickle down music economics" needs to die, as well. This is shining a huge light on problems in the entertainment industry, and ties into what we are seeing with people on UA-cam, and Hollywood celebrities (ie Kevin Spacey). It's clear that the people we claim to be our idols are many times not worthy of the praise, and we need to find fulfillment in ourselves instead of projecting our hopes onto people who may or may not have our best interest in mind.

      I'm more annoyed with cancel culture than people who worship celebrities. It needs to stop. If somebody does something and it is illegal, then go to police with your evidence and not on Twitter. If you don't go to police, then it means there's inadequate amount of evidence or something is not illegal, and in either case there's a reason for why we don't convict people in that case (presumption of innocence is there for a reason).
      I would honestly rather see all Twitter warriors deplatformed than cerebrities that they try to deplatform. It is worse for society when Lynch law becomes the new norm and deplatforming and Internet outrage becomes a new form of punishment that is available to any group that wants to inflict it on somebody. I honestly think that people simply enjoy bulling others and Internet gives them this outlet. They just need an excuse to do it, so if they think somebody "deserves" it, then they will do it and feel this rush from adding their small punch to somebody. And other celebrities will never take any position that is not socially acceptable, because they are afraid that they will get socially rejected and get bullied in a similar way, and they need their fans to make money.
      This is not a defense of Bassnectar though. I'm annoyed at humanity in general. He may belong to prison or be a huge asshole who doesn't belong to prison, but doesn't deserve fame either. But, God, it's as pathetic to see Internet social justice crucade campaigns and people bending their knee to those bullies as it is to see people who worship anybody due to their music or movie performance.
