This film was released five years before Dr Robert Ballard discovered the real Titanic wreck in the North Atlantic, so the writers of the film had no idea the Titanic is actually a total mess and in pieces at a crippling 12,400 feet depth, but the film itself proved to be a total box-office bomb, grossing about $7 million against an estimated $40 million budget. The film's producer Lew Grade later remarked that "it would have been cheaper to lower the Atlantic". This film also effectively ended Mr Grade's career in the movie industry.
Even if they didnt know the ship had split in two its pretty clear it would’ve been pretty badly damaged upon impact with the sea floor and that after all the years under water the wood wouldve rotted and the metal would have rusted. The film is abit daft to be honest. Even if they could refloat a sunken ship there would be no point other than for environmental reasons
if they had bothered to do even basic research they would have learned that according to eye witness accounts the titanic snapped in 2 like a pretzel stick!
Everytime I see this it gives me goosebumps. In my wildest fantasy I wished this could have happened. I'd love to have it raised and be able to see it in person and just learn about it all day. Of course though it would also have been disrespectful in a way to those who died and any survivors. A sunken ship should stay where it is. But Titanic is one of those historical objects that I xan never get enough of. It would be so cool to see the real Titanic both halves put on display. It would for sure have been preserved for decades to come. It's sad to see it slowly being turned into nothing but it's better than having it raised when first discovered and disrupting the final resting places of those killed. I'll never get tired of hearing about Titanic. I'd love to study it's schematics. I'd spend hours if I had the chance to look over the designs and prints of the Titianic from just being an idea to the build, and the final touches.
Researchers did raise one small section coming from the port or starboard area with an intact port hole, they did not disturb the bow or stern to get it it was a loose bit among the mile long debree field and is now in a museum with a small selection of reclaimed plates and dishes and a few other little items for the world to see so we dont forget about this tragedy..
@Dark Wizard It's not corrosion that's destroying her, it's actually a bacteria called Halomonas titanicae that's "eating" the iron the ship was made of, and in time she will be no more, and her remains will be recycled back into the ocean's ecosystem.
@Dark Wizard Very little actual corrosion has occurred due to the depth and temperature of the water at the wreck site, most of the deterioration has been caused by 'rusticles' which are hitherto unknown living organisms that are devouring the ship at an escalating pace.
Even if it were possible to raise the Titanic like in the movie, I would see two major problems: 1.) You could somewhat reverse history and bring back this wonderful ship as if it never had sunk, but you could not make the catastrophy itself unhappen, all those people who lost their lives. 2.) As you can even see in the model of the raised ship in this movie, the ship would be in a horrible state, totally damaged, and imagine also the interior of the ship after the water is drained: all the wooden furniture destroyed or full of moisture, moldered etc. You could leave it as that and expose it in a harbour as a ruin but never restore it to its former splendid appearance.
So, you folks who want to pass judgement without even seeing the full movie need to be filled in on the story. It is the cold war era, America vs. USSR, and the US has found a way to make a forcefield that will shield the US from nuclear attack. The device must be powered by a rare mineral that is only known to exist in sufficient quantity in a shipment that was placed on the Titanic. They must raise the ship to find this mineral. This movie was made BEFORE the real wreck was found so the true condition was totally unknown. Most popular theories of the time held that it sank intact. The second funnel is missing instead of the first because the producers wanted to preserve the beautiful profile of the ship--purely aesthetic reasons. There are kingposts and bulwark added to the bow of the model to match a real ship they did some location shooting on. The wreck is refloated by her hull being filled with foam and huge cages with hydrazine gas balloons welded to her lower sides. Watch the full movie and you will see all of this.
ironic, the real wreck was discovered as a cover for a mission to check on the reactors of two sunken US nuclear subs, so the cold war military pretext for the location of Titanic happened in fiction and reality.
At the time of the book’s publishing (and of this film’s making), the wreck of the Titanic had not been discovered yet, so the fact that the ship had broken in two as it sank and lost a stack was not yet known.
Yes this is true. The reviews of this movie and the box office were terrible for Raise the Titanic when it was released. Everyone who has seen this film though said this scene alone was worth it. The slow motion camerawork was amazing when they tried to raise the ship from the ocean bottom. And the scene when the intact Titanic slowly breaks the surface of the Atlantic and is refloated on top of the ocean again was incredible.

You mean lying, not 'laying'. What is it laying: a table, an egg. or what? You can lie on your front, lie on your back, lie down. You can lay a table, lay an egg.The verb lay means ‘to put something down carefully in a flat position’. It must have an object. It is a regular verb, but note the spelling of the past simple and past participle form: laid not layed: Shall I lay the tray on the bed? A wonderful wooden floor has been laid in the dining room. We don’t use lay to talk about 'being in a flat position'. Lay must have an object: My chicken laid an egg this morning. Not: My mother hates when the cat lays on our beds. Missing object: what does the cat lay? Is it eggs, or what? Lie is a verb which means ‘to be in or put yourself into a flat position’. It is an irregular verb and it doesn’t take an object. The -ing form (present participle) is lying and the past simple is lay. The present perfect form, lain, is very formal and is rarely used: I love to lie on a beach and read. She lay on the bed and gazed at the ceiling, daydreaming. The dog was lying by the gate waiting for me to come home. xx

Survivors of the Titanic even stated that she broke in half before going down. I don't have a clue how anyone wouldn't believe them, they were ON Titanic the night she sank!
Technically, it makes no sense for there to air bubbles rising ahead of the ship. All air in flotation devices would ned to stay in them, so the only thing to see would be water being displaced.
I remember when I first saw this movie and thought wouldn't be amazing if they could actually do that. But then Robert Ballard discovered the real Titanic and this movie seemed to quickly disappear

From China. Certainly I never know this footage exist or such thing really happen. Good success for the team who raised the Titanic. Must make America proud. Who knows where Titanic is now displayed please? Would like to visit and pay respects.

You gotta appreciate effects back then. Corridor Crew should do this. It's a miniature I think coming up. And it looks to be a real ship at some points. Pretty cool
Cussler's books required a lot of suspension of disbelief, but they were a lot of fun. As for this movie, they changed the ending and the result was a wreck worse than the Titanic.
This movie really showed how little they new of just how bad the Titanic’s condition was but I am glad we at least got to live the dream of raising her in this movie
Queen Mary is my resting place when I'm dead love seeing these love ships. But really sad that the titanic is going to be gone. But at least I seen her and live in the time the titanic was around.
You have to look back into the original inquests, that the claims were she went down in one entire ship . Hence why this film was based on what’s was said in history or the enquires. But sadly she is in two on the sea bed. The Titanic , will never die and all the people in her never forgotten .
Actually the reports from the survivors said it broke in half as it went vertical while going down and also some said that it went down in one piece. Nobody knew for sure until it was found.
Some survivors did insist it split before it disappeared below the surface. There were also accounts of 'explosions' before the ship submerged, which the media at the time chalked up to exploding boilers (a not unreasonable assumption at the time). Plus it was a moonless night the night Titanic went down. When those lights went out, people's eyes had yet to become fully night-adapted so that is why there were conflicting reports, plus the testimonies from First Class passengers held more away than the lower classes, and as such, the "official" report stated that Titanic went down whole was deemed "canon" until Robert Ballard saw the ship in two sections with the stern practically destroyed by implosions caused by the increasing sea pressure on the hull.
Although the movie is from 1980 and they didn't know how the wreck really looks like, did the really believe, masts and rigging are still intact after sinking and rotting for 68 years then?
Dr. Ballard thought it was possible when they flew their first unmanned craft over the wreck. They were very careful not to get it tangled up in any rigging that might still be present. They really did not know what to expect.
I remember reading this book back in grade school and being amazed. The funny thing is that this movie came out before they actually discovered the titanic. We now k kw the ship broke into 2 pieces so this could never happen.
It's just a movie. Wish fulfillment. What could have or might have been, or a simple flight of fancy. Don't over analyze it. Don't think so hard. Just laugh and enjoy it.

@@ddogboi2876 I am referring to the book by Clive Cussler in 1976, Raise the Titanic.
Not:
My mother hates when the cat lays on our beds.

Yip, Titanic went down in 2 pieces, resurfaced whole again... ah, the healing power of the ocean!
Yep. Barely 60 seconds of googling and a person knows that the film came out half a decade before the titanic was found and anybody knew that! Oh well. Everybody’s allowed to be stupid at least once a week.
@@HM2SGT No one knew it... except all the survivors who saw Titanic go down in two halves and went on to recall their story's to the media when they finally reached America! Maybe, stupidity lies in relying soley on Google to inform oneself of world events!
Ohhhhhhh.....i love this Movi❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
The book was great.
2022 people, we need a remake for this!!
My dad took my to see that movie at the theater. Then the Ballard new broke my heart, the reports from passengers were true, she did split in two. And was almost 3 miles down on the sea floor. Glade they found her but sad they found her to.
Still a great effect.
One irate critic, after watching this movie asked, Why didn't they just lower the Atlantic, it would have been cheaper!
The band are still playing on the deck.....
I've read the book by Clive Cussler, great book. Saw the movie and thought it very forgetable, half the story was left out. Cussler made the comment that never again would he allow one of his books to be made into a movie.
They did the same thing to Sahara....left out half the book....ruined it.
@@MrMrmmu72 Not only that, Dirk and Al seemed to be out of character compared to the books, yes ruined it.
Such a great plot in the book that the movie failed to really deliver on, hopefully someone might do it justice in the future
The books would make great movies if they were done right.
Sahara was a long way from the novel, but it was much better as a film than raise the Titanic. I still enjoy watching Sarah from time to time. I haven’t watched raise the Titanic since it first came out on laser disk.
It is a GRAVE. It should not be disturbed, out of simple respect for the deceased.
it's a movie ffs, made decades before the wreck was actually found. get that stick out of your butt.
Agreed, and a tomb for those still inside.
There is no one inside, flesh is eaten by either bacteria or other life forms, and the bones dissolved away decades ago.
It's also a fictional movie, no dead bodies involved

5-years after this movie came out: All hope was dashed after it was confirmed from eyewitnesses survivors, that Titanic was indeed broken in two and raising her would never be possible.
Survivors of the Titanic even stated that she broke in half before going down. I don't have a clue how anyone wouldn't believe them, they were ON Titanic the night she sank!
@@frederickglass1583 White Star and Halland and Wolf did everything to deny that she was broken into
If only..... Goodness what a sight.... Time to watch the whole movie again.
Only good thing about this was John Barry's music 🎶
Technically, it makes no sense for there to air bubbles rising ahead of the ship. All air in flotation devices would ned to stay in them, so the only thing to see would be water being displaced.
Lew Grade, on the box office failure of Raise The Titanic: "It would have been cheaper to drain the Atlantic."
I like the way Star Blazers raised the Yamato even more.
Me as well. It was epic.
Cost of the movie $40 million, box office $7 million. Boy did this movie sank like the Titanic.
This model is still rotting away outside!! in a film studio in Malta,it can be seen on Google earth.
The CGI is amazing.
@@boataxe4605 Joke
The only saving grace of this movie was John Barry's soundtrack
It’s funny how the Special Effects Department put a man operating a hand pump on the deck. Never caught it until now.!
Holy crap! Good eye! I found him. funny.
55 feet was the length of the model.
I remember when I first saw this movie and thought wouldn't be amazing if they could actually do that. But then Robert Ballard discovered the real Titanic and this movie seemed to quickly disappear
Near.... Far.... Wherever You Are
Gotta admit, that still looks pretty damn convincing 42 years later
Yep. Unfortunately, or fortunately for the movie, it was done before anyone knew the Titanic was actually in two pieces.
That’s the TRUE power of practical effects, in that anything is convincing when it’s ACTUALLY in front of the camera.
OK UA-cam power washers, get busy. The only reason that movie had to be made was those 8 minutes.
bro bought 100000000000000 super glue to put the ship in one and the funnels too ☠️☠️☠️
check out the little animated figure at 3:03 working a pump on deck, blink and you'll miss it.
another shout sending massive props/massive respect to the model builders and everybody who helped film this!
The music is beautiful
Composer John Barry. You might also recognize his work from dances with wolves
Say what you will about the film as a whole and the fact that it doesn’t adhere to the historical condition of the wreck. I don’t care, this scene as a whole is beautiful, and it makes me want to read the book.
From China. Certainly I never know this footage exist or such thing really happen. Good success for the team who raised the Titanic. Must make America proud. Who knows where Titanic is now displayed please? Would like to visit and pay respects.
Titanic be like: sorry guys I needed a quick break for 107 years
One funny thing is that in Clive Cussler's book, he predicted that the Titanic's wreck site would be discovered just one month away from when the wreck actually was located.
There's a ridiculous amount of weirdness with the entire Titanic story, 'Wreck of the Titan,' for example.
@@SteveT3D yeah and if you look who was on board, and who was not, and what ship it was, and what ship it wasn't, you find their hand.

You gotta appreciate effects back then. Corridor Crew should do this. It's a miniature I think coming up. And it looks to be a real ship at some points. Pretty cool
Still one of my favourite films. Love Richard Jordan.
As improbable as the book was, as absurd as this movie is, this was awesome to see on a large screen.
They superglued it together.
Why didnt we think off that?
In movies everything is posible.
In all fairness, it is a pretty cool concept.
Cussler's books required a lot of suspension of disbelief, but they were a lot of fun. As for this movie, they changed the ending and the result was a wreck worse than the Titanic.
I remember this, I even read the book when I was in the 7th grade. LOL
Only seen the movie 🎬 the once on TV during the 80s interesting idea at the time. Until the titanic was discovered
This movie really showed how little they new of just how bad the Titanic’s condition was but I am glad we at least got to live the dream of raising her in this movie
I was so mood by this movie just a possibility that they can raise that ship Jason Robards was great in it
In the book, the ship rose STERN first.
THAT Music of John Barry ...
Is this the part where Johnny Depp stands up on the rail and yells something like Im the Monarch of the Galaxy or sumpthin?
This is where my fascination with the history of the ship started. Such a sad tale.
Queen Mary is my resting place when I'm dead love seeing these love ships. But really sad that the titanic is going to be gone. But at least I seen her and live in the time the titanic was around.
Dang the flying Dutchman got an upgrade
We need yoda
And flexseal… _lots_ of flexseal!
I will add to the others. Composer John Barry's score is great !
This film was made before they found her, hence why she's not split in two
Of course people it's better shape than it went down, its a movie. Not real. Good effects though. 👍
The 'explosions' survivors heard were almost certainly the sounds of the ship tearing apart. Since the sinking of such a leviathan and technological wonder was so unexpected and hard to comprehend, the idea of it's being torn apart was even further from people's minds, so it's no wonder that so few people elected to take the notion seriously at the time. This movie really went out on a limb and was fairly liberal with poetic license. It's funny to think that when the bow of the ship was structurally strong enough to be lifted from the sea bed, the technology didn't exist to raise it. Now the technology exists, but if an attempt were made to raise the bow, it would likely just crumble.
Now tow it to Thailand so it can be scrapped.
Чёрная жемчужина возвращается....
Best scean in the whole movie! Unfortunately she is disappearing fast!
Still have it on glorious VHS .... which perhaps could be argued is as old as the Titanic itself 🤔
Would have been a huge selling point for flex seal. LOL
I read the book first...seriously. I know, sorry.

Ahhhhhhhhhh they raised the titanic she is back for life it is a miracle
Better than the Cameron movie
Awww wasn't the ship broken in half? Plus didn't it have big hole on the side? I'm sure glad nobody tried to hold their breath?
In the movie, they repaired the ice damage and sealed all other openings. Well... they did that in the book, the movie left that out.

Despite how terrible this movie was, this shot is incredible.
