- The Battle of Bannockburn was fought on 23-24 June 1314, between the army of Robert the Bruce, King of Scots, and the army of King Edward II of England, during the First War of Scottish Independence. It was decisive victory for Robert Bruce and formed a major turning point in the war, which ended 14 years later with the de jure restoration of Scottish independence under the Treaty of Edinburgh-Northampton. For this reason, the Battle of Bannockburn is widely considered a landmark moment in Scottish history

Some important aspects of the 2 day battle are missed out - such as the pits with stakes dug by the Scots to obstruct the English cavalry advance on day one - and the four pointed iron calthrops sown to impede the horses.
A small street in the area is named Caltrop Place.
It also omits to mention the contemporary dissension involving parts of the English nobility and Edward II - the Earls of Lancaster, Warwick, Arundel and Surrey refused to join the expedition against Bruce.
Very sneaky tactics by the Scots!
Thanks be to God that there were a few a English Noblemen who recognized how immoral and unworthy that attack on Scotland was. It was God's will that Scotland be free - they fought hard and gained their dignity!
@@rmp7400 Indeed, especially those very high in the pecking order that were captured and held for ransom - a nice little earner for Bruce.
Wallace was completely glossed over. And it was Edward Bruce who agreed the terms for Stirling’s surrender without his brother’s consent. The last thing Robert wanted was a pitched battle, but since Edward made the terms in his name, he had no choice.
The Treaty of Northampton only lasted a few years before Edward 3rd of England tore it up.
Good comment. Ediii may have repudiated the treaty, but things never reverted to pre Bannockburn domination, for all the losses the Scots took.
Very informative information about the battle of Banockburn in 1314 ,Well done Thank-you ✔️ 👏 👍.
Awesome video
The Scots sure won quite the victory here. The era of the Scottish war for independence was quite turbulent yet still interesting. That final account of the bodyguard knight going back to fight rather than run with the king was something all right.
the most bloodiest battle took place later that evening when the scots discovered the y forgot the whskeye at home and there was only one bottle for them all!!!
Despite numerous military reverses against the English post-Robert (this was the last major victory they won against England) they preserved their independence for another 3 centuries.
And it would be a Scottish king who would sit on the throne of England and unite the two kingdoms in 1603.
Great video graphics!
I also enjoy narration over reading as I find myself pausing the video again and again to catch up on reading or rewinding and your voice is wicked cool
Okay that’s great to hear thanks
This is really cool !!! Love the attention to detail in your videos . Really brings history to life ! 🏴/🇬🇧
Thanks a lot glad you enjoyed it!
Your a gullible sap.
Excellent work👏👏
Thanks a lot glad you enjoyed
Dude.... Insanely good.
Scotland has never been conquered the English held a few castles but the people were not conquered even the Romans 1000 years before could not defeat the Pictish Scots❤
Rome smashed the Scots at the battle of I think you know where and as the roman general said we just left , what's there to have nothing and the Scots would not meet the Romans in open battle just hit and run tactics., Britian was considered the rear end orifice of the known Roman world .Scotland was like leave it alone. Lets build a Wall and man it with auxiliary troops. I am not having a go at the Scots. love the buggers my two children's are Scot on their mother's side. the other side, From the land of the ancient Roman. Bloody good scrappers the Scots. Cheers.
Picts & Scots were actually two completely different peoples, speaking two different (but related) Celtic languages.
And the Romans did a pretty acceptable job of, yes, conquering Scotland. Go read about it rather than regurgitating folk legends that aren't really true.
If Scotland was conquered then what was the purpose of Hadrians Wall?
@@AGMAGM-mm3ci the Romans fell back behind the wall because Emperor Honorius needed the soldiers to defend Rome from barbarians.
Scotland (Caledonia) was militarily defeated. The Roman departure had nothing to do with the Scotland. It was just a strategic move, forced upon the Romans by barbarian attacks on Rome.
I suspect however, that we're actually debating the definition of the word "conquered".
I always felt bad for the horses.
Even the English ones?
Dinner
They had better armor than most!!
"in the year of our Lord 1314, patriots of Scotland starving and outnumbered charged the fields of Bannockburn. They fought like warrior poets, they fought like Scotsmen... and won their freedom" - Mel Gibson, 1995
The Scots won by using superior tactics, weapons, and wise use of the terrain at New Park. Mel Gibson is a babbling idiot who knows nothing about military strategy and winning a war. Robert Bruce's army was composed of veteran, seasoned warriors who had fought the English for over 14 years begining with Glen Troll in 1298. You don't win a war by charging at your enemy in a mad fit of rage like a Berserker Viking as portrayed in Brave Heart. If they fought in that fashion; the English calvary and archers would have decimated them. Bruce innovated the use of the Scottish schiltron as an offensive charging formation; instead of a stationery formation vulernable to missile attack.
One of the Best historical total war videos i've seen.
I loved seeing Dunbar at 0.51, You can almost imagine it as real.
Thanks a lot man
To bad it's not based on fact.
Beautiful video
My apologies, the narration was generated using AI
@@cinematicbattles559 ahhhhh that makes sense then. Sorry for the assumption 🙏
Just a minor Historical correction, Edward 1st didn't "invade" Scotland but assumed the Monarchy of Scotland because after the Scottish Kings death, fell of his horse and broke his neck, childless, the clan leaders could not agree on a successor so invited Edward 1st to oversee Scotland until a successor was found, but, instead he assumed the Scottish crown for himself.
Not quite, he picked a weaker option that he could use like a puppet, John Balliol.
@@clf7729who wasn't that weak as he was planning to invade England in support of the french, hence Edward invading and annexeing Scotland
😮 very hirstorical thanks
Thanks for watching
The irony of Scots lack of significant horse mounted troops was not a lack of horses or horsemen but rather how many Scottish knights and nobles were actually fighting on the English side
Nobles - parcel of rogues then, in 1707 and now
Good video! Too bad you couldn't include the combat between Bruce and Henry de Bohun!
Thank you, yes I did try but it proved to be too difficult as you can’t get individual units
This is a great stuff. If only this TW serie had immersion mod(s) about battles like the previous one ROME 2, would be as great as ROME 2 is in fighting and picture but with better visuals and details as already Attila has
I noticed the "three lions" being used on the shields of the English in the graphics. Im sure this wouldn't have been seen at Bannockburn as the 3 lions actually belonged to King James VI. He took this symbol with him when he moved his court to London on becoming King James I of England. It's been used by the English ever since.
It should be three leapords .
Nobody cares
Not correct
Are the tower shields accurate?
Excellent dude!! I prefer the narrated ones so i can watch all the action or maybe I'm just too lazy to read lol
Thanks a lot bro , thinking i might use the narrators for all my videos
Seeing this has just made me download ME2TW again for a play through! Loved this game when it first came out, but now I'm a seasoned TW gamer so know what I'm doing this time! :D
If you want to try an alternative to ME2, you should try the 1212 mod in Attila, or the Medieval mod in Rome 2 as they have better models for troops and lots of variety. In either case, this video was awesome to watch!
Yes this Is the 1212 mod for Attila 😁thanks for watching glad you enjoyed
Scotland's bloodiest battle was at Flodden Field in 1513, they even lost a king there.
Your ‘Dark Ages’ playlist is named incorrectly. The ‘Dark Ages’ only actually refers to the Early Medieval period (c. AD500-1000). All the battles in the list took place in the so-called High to Late Medieval period (c. AD100-1500).
I never realized there were so many clones and Asians fighting in Britain at that time in history.
Found out something interesting I might be more Scottish than English Bruce's nephew was a Randolph besides that a great video
Thanks man appreciate it
At last some clarification of the battle but not any mention of Knight Templar!
Cos they weren't there mate. No evidence of their presence at all. It's a myth.
@@Pete9Tails They had to be there because they were given land in Scotland. Kilwinnig among other and the Shetland and this is a fact. Therefore they must have participated in the battle. Look at the story of Kilwinnig in Ayrshire.
@@claudejuillet8294 zero evidence means everything else is guessing and guessing doesn't count.
DOUGLAS!!!✊️
Top notch....I wonder if the Scots day out on the wirral peninsula, at the battle of Brunanburh/Bromborough 937AD will feature, on your to do list, ? ...the site of the battle is largely intact, wirral archeologists are still turning up weapons, they presented Bernard Cornwell with a dagger retrieved from the site, best wishes from the wirral peninsula, bounded by the mersey and the Dee and the Irish sea...geography and rhyme...😊😊😊
Yes I will definitely have a look into this one

Scots also had the Knights Templar cavalry ❤
No they didn't. It's a myth.
Stirling Castle is situated on a volcanic rock, not a flat plain
People of Northampton you're Scottish! saor alba!
Fields of bannockburn!
10:07 Is this AI narrated? The pronunciation of "Marischal" is questionable af 😂. Other than that, great vid
Haha yes there are a few things it pronounces badly but cheers man thanks for watching
Roslin and Flodden were both bloodier and bigger battles. Just so you know.
After a few holes in your body from a sword your job is finished .those guys were bad a-.
The English learnt their lessons and used them at agincourt, crecy, etc
🏴🏴✌️🏴🏴
Please... What would have happened at Bannockburn if instead of the English cavalry the English infantry had attacked first? Thanks.
I’m not too sure, I think that the initial English attacks would have been more successful but I think either way Scotland would have still won
@cinematicbattles559 the reason that the Scots won was because they managed to contain the English to a narrow front by charging towards them in formation and trapping them between the Pelstream and Bannockburn. Had the English advanced against the Scots, the outcome might have been very different as Bruce was vastly outnumbered. More English casualties happened on the stampede as men were drowned trying to cross over the Bannockburn after Edward fled the field. Enjoyed your video, shame you couldn't get Stirling Castle to be shown accurately sitting high up on an old volcanic rock overlooking the entire area.
🏴❤️
Also Edward 2 had 2000 Calvary and 25000 soldiers against King Bruce 6000 soldiers 😂
The Scots did NOT wear tartan in those days
They did it was called a plaid made for fighting and used to keep you warm in the rain the Scots were traders all over the world while you pagans were being humped by Vikings your so called Saxons were 💩scared of them, "Cry England Allah" swapped your bibles for the Qu'ram should change your pounds for Shekels the amount of Arab money they pay your English Premier League get paid now they own World Golf Tournaments sell your souls to the highest bidders 🙈🙉🙊
Great video. But it’s worth remembered that there had to be 2nd War of Independence….Bruce’s legacy was basically lost after his death. The Pope refused to recognise Scotland as an independent country but encouraged them to make peace with the English. But as it’s been proven time and time again, we are a stubborn lot………..
Bannockburn was not Scotlands bloodiest battle, fast forward to september 9th 1513 to Flodden field in Northumberland. Ten thousand Scots were slain by the English including the King of Scotland James iv and most of the Scottish aristocracy.
Now I’m no military expert however I believe I could have won that battle by proper use of bowmen. Who thought it was a good idea for mounted knights to charge Scottish pikemen? 😮
Evan 200 archers with a "David's sling" could turn the battle.👍
The real heroes are the war horses. 😂
They found a letter last year from france from bailol signed king of scots 1303 , he was no coward , memory kept going bailol family ,oxford, dumfries and greyfriers dundee , bruce proclamed protector of scotland 1309 , at greyfriers its a small world 😊😊
Flodden Field when the Scottish King was killed.
Sabaton fans are coming!
Too late with the archers.
What about Prince William Wallace?
These Cartoons are nothing like the battle.
Very informative. But Scotland's bloodiest battle? Most historians give that title to Flodden.
Ahh I did not know this, might have to make another video covering that battle
Flodden was fought in England.
Also the Scots don't like to remember flodden they were massacred
Where was Wallace?
Unfortunately the game had no sprite for Wallace but I wish I could have included him
He was dead at this point.
No one wanted it. It was occupied. That was enough.
Hi
hi
The account of this battle is wrong. English chroniclers Gave the proper estimate of the Scottish army, and tje numbers were more. To with stand a Calvary charge the Scots had to had more men. This is a great video but not all your facts are accurate
The English were badly led. They should have won They had thousands of knights on horseback, a lot of them very rich men from all over western Europe An armoured mouted knight is equal to 7 men on the ground in these terms the scots were outnumbbered about thirty to one. bruce didn't want to fight this one. He knew what defeat felt like. His captains were going to depose him if he didn't
But the english had marched from Berwick in two days, about 80 miles and the night of the first day of fighting was a saints day. that means all the English peasants, confident of an easy win were drinking hard Then they were woken by the Scots odaciously advancing on them at dawn The Swiis used the obsoete shiltron tecnique 15 years later and got the credit for ghanging the natiure of warfare. but it was reinvented here in Scotland like eeverything else ie the indstrial revolution telephone, television, anti biotics tarmac The steam engine i.c. engines, pneumatic tyres anti anti septic surgery ,anesthetics, the stirling engine ,radar,England, grass, trees,..., capitalism, the U.S. navy, the russian navy
The Russian Navy?
@@garykeith1048 yes the russian navy look it up. Thrier flag is still the scottish saltire
@@johnredmond1314 Actually, the Flemish citizenry in 1302.... never mind
Had Edward I survived, The Bruce would have been defeated and, assuming he had any sense, made, once more, a vassel.

This was Attila Total War with a medieval mod that can be found in the steam workshop 👍
It always enfandens me that the ones who suffer the Most are the poor horses, who have no say so at all, but are treated as garbage w/o reguard to their feelings, whatsoever 😢
Like Putin’s army verses Ukraines army
On horses?
shite
Total Rubbish
Over fanciful graphics. Too much pro Edward I propaganda. Edward aimed to subjugate the people of Great Britain, including England. Scotland was occupied, but not conquered. William Wallace conveniently omitted.
There was no Great Britain in 1314😂😂😂😂😂😂
@@chazmork8265 The island of Great Britain is a geographical entity. The United Kingdom (UK) is a political entity that came into existence in 1603, with the unification of England and Scotland, under James VI of Scotland.
@@johnkelly3886 your missing the point we are talking about 1314 the Welsh and Irish joined Scotland against England Edward hung drawn and quartered Wallace's body not the airbrushed facts the video and if you know true history 13th Century Canterbury. Cathedral was a place of sançtuary of European refugees fleeing religious and political persecution
Stirling Castle sits on an ancient volcanic peak not in a field shown in this awful video....do your homework before accounting for my country's history!!!
Is this the only thing wrong with the video?
