I felt that Sandler having the money to pay off the debt and still repeatedly placing bets actually made the movie better. If Uncut Gems was about a guy who fucked up in the beginning and then spent the rest of the movie racing against the clock to try to recoup the money (a la Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels), it would still work, but there is something uniquely anxiety inducing about watching a man compulsively dig himself deeper and deeper into a hole in the hopes of making one more big score. It gives more agency to Sandler’s character and really captures the feeling of a man whose gambling addiction prevents him from doing the thing that you, as an audience member, are screaming for him to do. But I’m gay so what do I know.

Also the superstitious aspect around the rock is actually kind of how gambling addicts get. They develop ideas of whats 'lucky' and follow rules that don't make sense because they believe if they do that thing, then the 'luck' is on their side.

One thing Nick also kind of misunderstands is the “magical rock.” It’s really unclear if the rock is actually magic or if KG is just superstitious and the rock being around him as a placebo psychological effect of making him extra motivated to win or something. No offense to these guys, but most of their points are god awful. I'd have to watch it again to jog my memory, but I do remember clearly that I completely understood the movie and what was going on the entire way through... don't know what this guy's talking about when he claims the plot didn't make sense or was lazy. And of course the rock wasn't literally magical; the movie isn't fantastical or superstitious, it just has characters that are, exactly like the real world. And actually, superstitious thinking is fairly common among gamblers... how was this not obvious? The genre and tone clearly tells the audience this. I think the nitpicky dude just struggles with implication or subtext or something? I don't know.

Honestly, the reason it's even more anxiety inducing when you watch it (unless you are also a compulsive gambler) is that you are constantly watching in disbelief that Sandler's character HAS the money and options to get out from under his debt, but refuses to just get out of trouble and be stuck like a 100 grand. He keeps layering massive risk on top of risk even when he's driving by a potential off ramp. If he didn't have the money or family to borrow it from his character would be more understandable and heroic, he'd be an underdog just trying to survive. He's so much more unlikeable because he refuses to stop gambling no matter how many chances he is given or how much privilege he otherwise has in life. Any normal dude watching has to be screaming "JUST USE THE ROCK TO PAY OFF THE DEBTS AND GO BACK TO FUCKING JULIA FOX IN YOUR CONDO, YOU DUMB LUCKY FUCK."

I feel the same about Uncut Gems as I do about Parasite. Both are experience films with a capital E. The first time you watch both, if you fuck with them, you REALLY fuck with them, and it's such a wild ride. But the thing about these thrill-ride kind of movies is that, imo, they have diminishing returns; every subsequent watch you're just chasing that first high. I think they're both still worth rewatching if only to appreciate the screenplays for both and figuring out how they both accomplished what they did. Oh and I'm in agreement with Stav, Good Time is the better (and much more rewatchable) Safdie Bros film. Can't wait for whatever those boys do next tho.

I think good time helps you appreciate uncut gems more, because you can see the evolution of the visual style, and cross-film motifs (blacklights, quasi-magical elements for some examples), and I think Good times has even more of what Nick was complaining about, but the tension is more constant, so I think plot wise it's weaker, but tone wise some people might prefer it or be more impacted by it than Uncut Gems. The way Nick talks about this movie reminds me of the way I would talk about a movie when I didn’t like the feeling it gave me. Not to say that that’s what it is, I think Nick’s okay with feeling sick or anxious from this. It’s the way he points out plot holes that don’t really matter/points out things that come from a direct misunderstanding of a film, it feels more like an excuse to not ‘fully commit to the world of the film’ than an actual criticism. Like if some overly disturbing film got to me I’d act like that; “oh, but someone definitely would’ve helped her out if they saw that” “it’s stupid because he definitely would’ve thought through a way to get free by then” “they would’ve caught him by now” like that may be true but it doesn’t fucking matter, the whole point is to let that stuff happen. All this to say I don’t think Nick realizes he’s doing that, but then again I’m a gay man so what do I know…
