    You are very clever and this is another item I think I need. BTW of all the factory made and home brew vans we see and watch on you tube your build is the one we most admire. Whenever I open the cabinets in our Winnebago Travato 59k I can't help but think about the solid cabinets you have. So sturdy and so beautiful.

    Food for thought, if you put a layer of fiberglass over the plywood, then sanded and painted, it would match the van. I realize most folks would never know the difference they way you have it.

    Nice job and a big Atta Boy to Lyle! Have you thought about using Starboard? It's readily available, needs no finish and absolutely nothing sticks to it. I want to be where you are...in the sun!

    • @CareyOnVagabond
      @CareyOnVagabond  3 роки тому

      It was what I initially thought of but wasn’t about a piece 6 1/2 for long . I’ve never worked with it and wasn’t sure about its weight compared to acrylic. Sounds like good stuff. Any idea where to get a piece that long?

    • @solarsail56
      @solarsail56 3 роки тому +1

      @@CareyOnVagabond I use it all the time - I'm pretty sure it will work for you. I custom order mine at Englund Marine. The only concern I would have is that it can be a bit bendy. However, with all the mounts you have it should work with a 1/2 piece. Next time you are in town I can let you play with some scraps I have. Also I have a sheet of it 48" x 24" covering my fish cleaning station - I don't know if you noticed that. As far as weight - 1/2" of starboard would probably be similar to 1/4" of acrylic. Starboard is also more flexible - acrylic is pretty brittle and could easily break if hit by a rock or branch. You can beat on starboard all day long and it won't break. It works very easily with simple hand tools.

      I’ve experimented a bit but usually lately all I use is Hemp oil. It’s a drying oil like walnut or linseed. As far as after that I usually don’t do anything and just let age and natural patina show. They can always be re-oiled anytime you want to freshen them up. 😉

    Looks great! I agree with another that Aluminum might be the way to go. Maybe 1/4”... You could try a rubber dam on the lower edge to seal up against the van roof. Maybe something like they use on the bottom or maybe sides of garage doors?

    Also - how are you securing THE BOTTOM of those "brackets" -- it seems to just sit on some hardcore adhesive tape? (1:01) h
