X as /ʃ/ has its roots in Portuguese, not Pinyin. All the Asian languages that use it for that role (pinyin, Vietnamese, etc.) are doing it because of the Portuguese traders in the 1500's standardizing their orthography.
eh, no. As a native Vietnamese, I would like to say that s is used for /ʃ/, not x. We were a colony of the French Empire, and since Indochina was a very important area of the empire, lots of our sounds and words come from French, not Portuguese.

Nah, Interlingua would be the Romance equivalent to Interslavic, as both are trying to strike the balance with a generalized naturalism, while LFN is very pigin-like in its design.

To be fair, you need to have a very high IQ to understand Esperanto. The grammar is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of morphosyntax most phrases will go over a typical learner's head. There's also Esperanto's eurocentric phonology, which is deftly woven into its orthography- its particular phonology draws heavily from Polish, for instance. Esperantists understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depth of its toponyms, to realise that they're not just unnatural- they say something deep about LANGUAGE. As a consequence people who dislike Esperanto truly are idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the genius in Esperanto's diphthong /eu̯/, which itself is a cryptic reference to Ancient Greek's prefix meaning "well." I’m smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Anthony McCarthy’s genius wit unfolds itself on their computer moniters. What fools.. how I pity them. 😂 And yes, by the way, i DO have a new radio show in Esperanto every week. And no, you cannot see it. I didn't know LFN could be discussed ignoring everything interesting about LFN (its grammar). I'm genuinely surprised he ended up evaluating the language positively since not a single one of Lingua Franca Nova's redeeming qualities were addressed (although its flaws were indeed highlighted).
Request: Modern hebrew! you said you wouldn't review a natlang because a natlang doesn't have a goal, and doesn't have any creators, so you can't point fingers and say "why did you do that? You should have done something else" abd you can't blame anyone. However, hebrew was "created" for a purpose (to be the common spoken language of the jewish, while still being enough actual Hebrew and not a language that originated from a non jew language, like ladino and the such) And it did have creators. In fact, Modern Hebrew does have a conlang part to it, because in the very beggining it was made by picking elements from the extinct "varieties" of hebrew, and continued with people deliberately inventing new words from old roots or reusing old words. Basically every word currently in modern hebrew is either a loanword, slang, or was deliberately coined, added or invented by someone.
Modern Hebrew is about as much of a conlang as Greek or Italian, it's a partial koinezation of already existing Hebrew dialects of the time. Coining new terms and adopting loans is something languages do normally and Hebrew is no exception. It is only a "conlang" for people who don't know that Hebrew actually was spoken as a native language and never truly died out.

On the Eurocentric note, I would hardly call a romance based auxlang Euro-centric. South America is almost entirely Romance speaking, so is Central America and North America has a large minority of Romance speakers, with the predominant language being majority romance in its vocabulary and closely related. In Africa the main two lingua francas are French and English, with majority romance vocabulary as previously mentioned. Oceania has a very large amount of French speakers, and the Philippines have large amounts of Spanish vocabulary in most of their languages. There are only two language families with less more speaker than the Romance languages: Indo-Aryan and Sinitic. However, the Romance vocabulary will be more understood around the world than Sinitic due to a much simpler phonology (try to make a tonal auxlang) and it’s Indo European roots which make its vocabulary similar to the most commonly spoken languages on earth such and Hindi Russian Persian German and especially English. Romance vocabulary also has an advantage over Indo Aryan vocabulary because once again, simpler phonology (no aspirated/ unaspirated and no retroflex consonants), they have a broader area in which they are lingua-francas or have a large amount of speakers, they have more second language speakers making their total speaker count very likely higher, and once again:English. Pls stop with the “but it’s Eurocentric” bullshit, you wouldn’t say “it’s too Afrocentric” if someone made a Bantu based auxlang so why do it for a Romance based one
Just discovered this series a few days ago, and I’ve been binge-watching the whole thing. I know this video specifically is three years old at this point, but this show is still cool nonetheless.
The criticism of this language being "euro-centric" feels... Misplaced. This is a Romance language, intended to be understood by Romance-speakers. It's not trying to unite all the world, & just happens to bias Europeans, like many others, it's just a Romantic Interlang. It has a fairly humble goal & it seems to achieve it relatively well. The lack of gramatical gender is a notable divergence from the other Romance langauges, but it's not like we haven't dropped other parts of Latin grammer for the sake of convince, anyways.
Something I always wonder with international conlangs. A lot of them are euro-centric, but I always wonder if that just isn't the best case scenario for a good conlang. Let's say we base the conlang on words from multiple language families, wouldn't it result in a language that is hard to understand for everyone? At least euro-centric language are very easy to understand for Europeans.

@@goldenhorde6944 That's not the point of a IAL. The most widely spoken languages are English, French, Portuguese, and Spanish. So ideally the IAL would be a mixture of these languages. Or, you could create a conlang based on what languages are most useful in the STEM fields. So English, French, German, Russian and Chinese.
I might be completely wrong, but isn't "eu" kind of common in romance languages? It is in Portuguese at least. Many very basic pronouns (mainly the possessive pronouns) have this in Portuguese: eu, meu, teu, seu, ... and some verb conjugations (e.g., third person past tense in the first conjugation): ele deu, ele comeu, ele bateu,... Maybe that's why those romance-based IALs keep using it. I'm not a linguist though, just a Portuguese speaker. I may be completely wrong about how common this is in other romance languages. Galician pronouns ate almost identical, but I don't know about the verbs. Spanish possessive pronouns don't end in "eu" though. Yeah, I don't know. I'm probably just completely wrong.

Correction: elefen doesn't mark the passive on the verb. In fact the only inflection is s for plural. Passive is indicated by ia before the verb, va for future and ta for unreal (would/should)
I know what you mean, but "passive" is an incorrect word. putting "ia" before the verb indicates that the verb is in the PAST TENSE. And passivity, which is something like "being X'd" in English, is expressed by "(es) X-da". For example, "it is designed" in Elefen is "lo es desiniada", with "desinia" meaning "to design".
With your pro-toki pona bias, you should subtitle all your videos into toki pona. That would give some credit to your "this should be an international language" argument while possibly increasing the amount of people who can understand your videos

Hey, I've been a follower of your channel for a while, and a conlanger for a little while longer. I've been working on a conlang for a while called Anderian Common, for my NationStates nation New Anderia (although officially it's the Federal Republic of Anderia but that's neither here nor there). I know that blokes like Ian Foster have requested reviews of their own conlangs, and I was wondering if at some point down the road when it's a little more developed you might take a look at it. For a little sample, here's the official name of the nation (I suppose that was here or there, hm...) in the language, Vihelezeģenene Zypsezeģ Andêriu. Love the channel, keep up the good work!
It could be used as a good European or Mediterranean lingua franca and one major pro imo is that it can be written with the 3 scripts used in Europe and around it, those being the Latin, Cyrillic and Arabic scripts (sry greek). If anyone has any idea on how to write it with greek do send a reply. My attempt at writing Lingua Franca Nova with the greek script was done by using the old greek letter Sho/Ϸϸ and a digraph of ΖΧ ζχ for the Lingua Franca Nova's J sound
Are you going to make a video about Glosa? I used to think that it’s a yet another amateur IAL pointlessly and naïvely trying to compete with esperanto or interlingua. However, I just learned how cool its design is: - the vocab is very academic, with many Greek terms, - the phonology is ok (only 4 sibilants, of which 1 is rare and only 1 is affricate), - the phonology allows for an ok orthography, - last but definitely not least: it’s ISOLATING, with all its virtues, like the option to write it with Chinese characters. It may be a bad option for a Global Lingua Franca (GLF), but it looks excellent for educational purposes. I think of it as a combination of Interlingua and Toki Pona. Maybe you will like it as a fan of TP.

Student in elefen is really "studiante". "Scola" is a school, but can also refer to the students there collectively. Yes, elefen doesn't have the -a/-o markers for adjectives/nouns, but that doesn't matter; word order takes care of that. And imo elefen sounds closer to a real language without the forced -a/-o everywhere.
Weird. I do not necessarily like Esperanto, but I had to admit that the -o/-a/-e marker, along with the -n accusative marker, was well thought-through design. It may not be like natural languages, but it is an artificial language; it shouldn't be 'natural.'
I think the usage of x for sh was originally invented by the Spanish who introduced it to native languages of South America but in Spanish the sound merged with their j (which kinda sounds like an h or the German ch), which explains their pronunciation of "Mexico".

Afrikaner Kid I know that a few others have mentioned Afrihili to him, and I think that he has added it to his other list. The only worry I have about Afrihili is that there's not a lot of information about it, and the official grammar is exceedingly rare.
The way LFN handles gender is pretty much the same as every romance language. If it ends in "a" it's feminine, "o" it's masculine... with the exception of literally thousands of words

LFN feels like an average of Romance languages, and I can understand text in LFN about as well as I can understand text in other Romance languages such as Spanish (maybe a bit less than Spanish *specifically*, because I speak Portuguese, but...) Funny thing, in the translation of the Babel story, God's name (Yahweh) gets rendered as "Iaue". Just vowels, no consonants. The original Hebrew was "YHWH", all consonants, no vowels, because vowels weren't written at the time.

You should look at Kotava, it's grammar explanation is all in french but it bills itself as a truly international auxlang. I know it has the five vowel system but that's about it.

As an actual Spanish and Portuguese speaker with some knowledge of French, Italian and Catalan, (and I do not intend any offence) Lingua Franca Nova sounds like a rich kid trying to speak Italian with minimal knowledge of the language.

I hate that the first person singular pronoun is "me" or "mi" in both Elefen and Esperanto! Almost all European languages have some variation of "me" as an object pronoun while "I, ich, je, yo, io, eu, jo," etc. are used as the subject pronoun. It makes some sense in Esperanto with "min" being the accusative version, and I guess/think that Elefen doesn't inflect or have words for the object pronouns it just depends on word order? But like, it's still beyond my understanding why Elefen would use "me" and not something like "jo" or "yo" or "mio" because "me" is only an object pronoun for most Romance Languages. If this were really based on Romance Languages, it should have "Jo" as the first person singular subject pronoun and probably stick to the interesting way that Romance languages go from SVO to SOV with object pronouns (which I don't think it does but maybe it does, I need to find out more about it). The absence of grammatical gender isn't horrible necessarily but now it has those troublesome flaws you mentioned. Overall, I like it a lot. I just hate that one pronoun part of it. Thanks for the interesting video on this honestly boring language! It makes me feel better about my language skills being able to understand a lot of Elefen.

Both are eurocentric (or rather romance-centric), but Elefen is much more regular than Interlingua, thus at least it would be easier to learn of the two.
Languages derivated from Latin have a very logical and organized grammar. Só this "Eurocentrism" is not bad, just makes the language easier to learn for almost everyone.
But most people around the world don't speak a Romance language, meaning that they won't already be familiar with Romance grammar. I don't think that you can hold its Eurocentrism against it because it's very unrealistic to expect an auxlang to conform to every single language in the world the way this language does with Romance. It's not supposed to be a 100% universal language, it's designed specifically to be a simplified, basic Romance language and it works very well for that.
Basically all the auxlangs want to have both the word "Europe" and IPA-like vowel spelling. That necessarily leads you to /eu/...

you said you wouldn't review a natlang because a natlang doesn't have a goal, and doesn't have any creators, so you can't point fingers and say "why did you do that? You should have done something else" abd you can't blame anyone.
However, hebrew was "created" for a purpose (to be the common spoken language of the jewish, while still being enough actual Hebrew and not a language that originated from a non jew language, like ladino and the such)
And it did have creators.
In fact, Modern Hebrew does have a conlang part to it, because in the very beggining it was made by picking elements from the extinct "varieties" of hebrew, and continued with people deliberately inventing new words from old roots or reusing old words.
Basically every word currently in modern hebrew is either a loanword, slang, or was deliberately coined, added or invented by someone.

Modern Hebrew is about as much of a conlang as Greek or Italian, it's a partial koinezation of already existing Hebrew dialects of the time. Coining new terms and adopting loans is something languages do normally and Hebrew is no exception.

On the Eurocentric note, I would hardly call a romance based auxlang Euro-centric.
South America is almost entirely Romance speaking, so is Central America and North America has a large minority of Romance speakers, with the predominant language being majority romance in its vocabulary and closely related. In Africa the main two lingua francas are French and English, with majority romance vocabulary as previously mentioned. Oceania has a very large amount of French speakers, and the Philippines have large amounts of Spanish vocabulary in most of their languages.
There are only two language families with less more speaker than the Romance languages: Indo-Aryan and Sinitic. However, the Romance vocabulary will be more understood around the world than Sinitic due to a much simpler phonology (try to make a tonal auxlang) and it’s Indo European roots which make its vocabulary similar to the most commonly spoken languages on earth such and Hindi Russian Persian German and especially English. Romance vocabulary also has an advantage over Indo Aryan vocabulary because once again, simpler phonology (no aspirated/ unaspirated and no retroflex consonants), they have a broader area in which they are lingua-francas or have a large amount of speakers, they have more second language speakers making their total speaker count very likely higher, and once again:English.

The criticism of this language being "euro-centric" feels... Misplaced. This is a Romance language, intended to be understood by Romance-speakers. It's not trying to unite all the world, & just happens to bias Europeans, like many others, it's just a Romantic Interlang. It has a fairly humble goal & it seems to achieve it relatively well. The lack of gramatical gender is a notable divergence from the other Romance langauges, but it's not like we haven't dropped other parts of Latin grammer for the sake of convince, anyways.

Something I always wonder with international conlangs. A lot of them are euro-centric, but I always wonder if that just isn't the best case scenario for a good conlang.
Let's say we base the conlang on words from multiple language families, wouldn't it result in a language that is hard to understand for everyone? At least euro-centric language are very easy to understand for Europeans.

@@goldenhorde6944 That's not the point of a IAL. The most widely spoken languages are English, French, Portuguese, and Spanish. So ideally the IAL would be a mixture of these languages. Or, you could create a conlang based on what languages are most useful in the STEM fields. So English, French, German, Russian and Chinese.

I might be completely wrong, but isn't "eu" kind of common in romance languages? It is in Portuguese at least. Many very basic pronouns (mainly the possessive pronouns) have this in Portuguese: eu, meu, teu, seu, ... and some verb conjugations (e.g., third person past tense in the first conjugation): ele deu, ele comeu, ele bateu,...
Maybe that's why those romance-based IALs keep using it.
I'm not a linguist though, just a Portuguese speaker. I may be completely wrong about how common this is in other romance languages. Galician pronouns ate almost identical, but I don't know about the verbs. Spanish possessive pronouns don't end in "eu" though.

Correction: elefen doesn't mark the passive on the verb. In fact the only inflection is s for plural. Passive is indicated by ia before the verb, va for future and ta for unreal (would/should)
I know what you mean, but "passive" is an incorrect word. putting "ia" before the verb indicates that the verb is in the PAST TENSE. And passivity, which is something like "being X'd" in English, is expressed by "(es) X-da". For example, "it is designed" in Elefen is "lo es desiniada", with "desinia" meaning "to design".

Hey, I've been a follower of your channel for a while, and a conlanger for a little while longer. I've been working on a conlang for a while called Anderian Common, for my NationStates nation New Anderia (although officially it's the Federal Republic of Anderia but that's neither here nor there). I know that blokes like Ian Foster have requested reviews of their own conlangs, and I was wondering if at some point down the road when it's a little more developed you might take a look at it. For a little sample, here's the official name of the nation (I suppose that was here or there, hm...) in the language, Vihelezeģenene Zypsezeģ Andêriu. Love the channel, keep up the good work!
It could be used as a good European or Mediterranean lingua franca and one major pro imo is that it can be written with the 3 scripts used in Europe and around it, those being the Latin, Cyrillic and Arabic scripts (sry greek).
If anyone has any idea on how to write it with greek do send a reply. My attempt at writing Lingua Franca Nova with the greek script was done by using the old greek letter Sho/Ϸϸ and a digraph of ΖΧ ζχ for the Lingua Franca Nova's J sound
Are you going to make a video about Glosa? I used to think that it’s a yet another amateur IAL pointlessly and naïvely trying to compete with esperanto or interlingua. However, I just learned how cool its design is:
- the vocab is very academic, with many Greek terms,
- the phonology is ok (only 4 sibilants, of which 1 is rare and only 1 is affricate),
- the phonology allows for an ok orthography,
- last but definitely not least: it’s ISOLATING, with all its virtues, like the option to write it with Chinese characters.
It may be a bad option for a Global Lingua Franca (GLF), but it looks excellent for educational purposes. I think of it as a combination of Interlingua and Toki Pona. Maybe you will like it as a fan of TP.

Student in elefen is really "studiante". "Scola" is a school, but can also refer to the students there collectively. Yes, elefen doesn't have the -a/-o markers for adjectives/nouns, but that doesn't matter; word order takes care of that. And imo elefen sounds closer to a real language without the forced -a/-o everywhere.

Weird. I do not necessarily like Esperanto, but I had to admit that the -o/-a/-e marker, along with the -n accusative marker, was well thought-through design. It may not be like natural languages, but it is an artificial language; it shouldn't be 'natural.'

I think the usage of x for sh was originally invented by the Spanish who introduced it to native languages of South America but in Spanish the sound merged with their j (which kinda sounds like an h or the German ch), which explains their pronunciation of "Mexico".

The way LFN handles gender is pretty much the same as every romance language. If it ends in "a" it's feminine, "o" it's masculine... with the exception of literally thousands of words

LFN feels like an average of Romance languages, and I can understand text in LFN about as well as I can understand text in other Romance languages such as Spanish (maybe a bit less than Spanish *specifically*, because I speak Portuguese, but...)
Funny thing, in the translation of the Babel story, God's name (Yahweh) gets rendered as "Iaue". Just vowels, no consonants. The original Hebrew was "YHWH", all consonants, no vowels, because vowels weren't written at the time.

Also, idk how much they've actually been constructed or fleshed out, but Daedric and Dwarvish (Dwemmer) from The Elder Scrolls are somewhat functioning languages you might do? I hate that the first person singular pronoun is "me" or "mi" in both Elefen and Esperanto!
Almost all European languages have some variation of "me" as an object pronoun while "I, ich, je, yo, io, eu, jo," etc. are used as the subject pronoun. It makes some sense in Esperanto with "min" being the accusative version, and I guess/think that Elefen doesn't inflect or have words for the object pronouns it just depends on word order? But like, it's still beyond my understanding why Elefen would use "me" and not something like "jo" or "yo" or "mio" because "me" is only an object pronoun for most Romance Languages. If this were really based on Romance Languages, it should have "Jo" as the first person singular subject pronoun and probably stick to the interesting way that Romance languages go from SVO to SOV with object pronouns (which I don't think it does but maybe it does, I need to find out more about it).
The absence of grammatical gender isn't horrible necessarily but now it has those troublesome flaws you mentioned.
Overall, I like it a lot. I just hate that one pronoun part of it. Thanks for the interesting video on this honestly boring language! It makes me feel better about my language skills being able to understand a lot of Elefen.

Languages derivated from Latin have a very logical and organized grammar. Só this "Eurocentrism" is not bad, just makes the language easier to learn for almost everyone.

I don't think that you can hold its Eurocentrism against it because it's very unrealistic to expect an auxlang to conform to every single language in the world the way this language does with Romance. It's not supposed to be a 100% universal language, it's designed specifically to be a simplified, basic Romance language and it works very well for that.
