The high mass bridge is essential to get the best out of this bass, don’t dream of using it without it… full neck pickup and dial down the bridge and tone to about 8 and you’re getting into a very authentic retro tone, then driven into tubes and you’re in heaven….

Best review of this bass. I’ve had EB-3’s, EB-0’s even a 1972 EB-3 long scale. Oh, yes and many others like Music Man and currently- a burgundy, Jack Bruce Warwick Survivor bass. I’m used to a sparky, punchy high, midrange tone of the EB-3 bridge pickup I didn’t hear on the bridge playing here. What makes this SG bass tempting to buy is the tuning stability which my earlier EB-3’s lacked, especially when bending strings like Bruce did in West Bruce & Laing. Short scale basses are unique in that you can bend strings like a guitarist. Hard, very hard to do on a 24 fret bass. The short scale is great because you focus on what you can create. Jack Bruce on live Cream: Sweet Wine in C, Spoonful and I’m So Glad in E. Using open strings to beef up the fretted notes. Or push against the fret of the 7th note bending to the 8 octave as Jack would describe. Getting that blue note then resolving to the 5th. Thx for the wonderful review. Appreciate it.

I tested one yesterday in a shop, trying different combinations of volumes, tone, finger and pick. It was really cool to have it in the hands but tonewise I prefer my les paul junior dc tribute. I must say that the sg had standard strings while on my les paul I mounted EB slinky flatwound 50-105

This is my 3rd Bass and I love it! Can't say it's my favourite (ie. neck dive) but it definitely has the best heavy bass tone by far. Looks great too

Mustang should *probably* be your next review, although the Squire VM Jaguar SS is wildly popular at the moment and just might be the reason for this whole short scale renaissance to begin with.

An SG bass or EB.. Is on so many albums, plugged right into an Ampeg B15.. Its ridiculous how many albums and songs over the decades and decades its been around. Its my go to bass, with stainless flats. Ill have to try cobalt flats. I wasnt aware of them. I play cobalts on my guitars now and have been very happy with them.

If it came down to actually buying a short scale I would have to go with a mustang or sire.

Across a few years, I had an SG Special, a late-70s Mustang, a new JMJ Mustang, and a Badtz-Maru edition Bronco. The JMJ Mustang was my favorite by far and just about a grand new if I remember right.

Thanks for the string recommendations - love the sound of flatwounds on a short scale but am also trying to find ways to get a biiiit more midrange and treble out of my les paul junior dc tribute. These days its been roundwounds and some strategic amp EQing but will def try these strings out.

I had one four or five year ago (Same 2015 version). Fun bass overall but one big thing bothered me. I know it's just aesthetics but why no neck binding? every other spec leads me to believe this is modelled after an SG standard so I felt like they just kinda said "nah f**k it" on that feature. If someone does have this bass, consider adding a thumb rest right in between both pickups. It put my hand in a much more comfortable position for finger style play.

I love the tone of these but I have never enjoyed how they play. Really top heavy and just feels awkward but I prefer long scale. I don't think I've ever tried the short scale. One shorty I have played that I like is the Gretsch's there are a few different models, the low price point models seem to have intonation issues and usually needs some setup to get around tuning issues but they play real nice and have a good even weight to them in my opinion

I had the gretsch junior jet for a while and ended up reselling it, it just didn't feel like quality. Got the double cutaway hollowbody instead, way better on every metric except you do have to use an extra wide strap to minimize neck dive, but that's true of the gibson sg bass he's reviewing too

I like the look but never tried one out. I have a ltd viper 34 inch scale that i like but i know the wood quality and electronics are nicer on the sg bass plus i like the full round neck shape Gibson has been using lately. Anything closer to a fat 50s neck shape is what i go for. I have a les paul double cut tribute bass and love it. I am first wanting the new non reverse Thunderbird which also has a beefy neck, then i will be after a sg bass.

I had one sg bass where the neck pickup was rattling, what I did was put something inside like a sponge or piece of foam in some areas to secure it from moving around and it stopped the rattling permanently, look inside underneath the chrome housing and see what you can do.

A good example of a Jazz Bass burpy tone from an SG is some songs from the band Free and Andy Fraser. Still a bit different tone, but in that ballpark. To be fair, Andy played the original bass this SG came from....the EB3 w/varitone switch. So, I don't know how much that played into his tone. ua-cam.com/video/oMyqIQ6LLjo/v-deo.html Another example is Dee Murray (with Elton John) on the 11-17-70 live album. Dee briefly played an EB3 before switching to a Fender P-bass. ua-cam.com/video/cC1ocO0pVgs/v-deo.html

LOL. Alright, bud, if we have to get technical and personal-belief about things, I personally think that woods contribute in terms of resonance and response, even if not in EQ curve, if that makes sense. Most people believe at least a little bit in 'wood->tone' across the guitar world, but I'm also a big fan of the scientific evidence, so I have been tracking with the recent videos about it especially. Don't make assumptions.

The eb-3 can sit pretty well in a relatively uncluttered mix, which this video can't possibly portray...just listen to how big Andy Fraser could make one sound with Free, almost like a bassoon at times...that being said, the modern sg has different pickups for some reason, so it's apples and oranges
