As a certified Brit, I can confirm that this is true and still holds to this day. Even a regular bar brawl requires a commentator, at least one assistant for each fighter(who keeps the fighters towels, weapons and a cool drink), regular resting periods so the fighters have a bit of time to think(typically 30 seconds but the length of it could be increased depending on the number of fighters) and for each fighter to be given time to get up if they are knocked on the ground. After the fight is finished(either by formal surrender or 5 second knockout) all fighters are required to shake hands and assist in repairing any damage done to the property they are currently in.

Ah, nothing like a gentlemanly brawl in 1890s London, by the Thames. ~ On a sidenote, the good thing about this dub: it truly shows how bizarre this adventure is.
One thing I like in this scene is we just get a good idea of how Jonathan is a strong character, even if he isn't as popular of a JoJo as his successors, but his spirit, his compassion, his strong sense of right and wrong, and his drive are what make him such a great JoJo as the first, the fact he is such a gentleman that he COULD have killed Speedwagon and his boys, but he showed mercy since he imagined they had families to go home to, even with the things they did to survive, just as he had been trying to go home to his father as he began to look for Wang Chung to save his father from Dio's actions. The crazy part about this is it's exactly how George was with Dario, but compared to Dario Speedwagon actually chose a path of goodness and saved his descendants assess.
@@ichigopockychan Imagine if Dario died first before his mother. Dio would be able to go to the Joestar Mansion and would be an actual loving brother to Jonathan due to his mother. As much as I hate Dio I wish he got that life instead.
@@ichigopockychan “In the gutter, you learn to spot lowlifes pretty quick if you want to see tomorrow. I’ve trained my nose to sort out the bad ones from the good just from a sniff. This fella reeks of brimstone and blood worse than anyone I’ve ever laid eyes on! He is pure evil! Right down to his very bones! Is he a victim of circumstance, you’re wondering? Not on your life! He’s been evil since he drew his first breath!” -Speedwagon on Dio
George was also willfully ignorant of Dario's evil and even showed to ignore it when the cops pointed out he had been in jail before and that Dario stole George's wedding ring (to which George replies that he must have been hungry). it's also George who brings Dio to his house and ignores how he tortures Jonathan and even prefers him to Jonathan. Then even after he finds out that Dio poisoned him and even after he takes Dio's stabbing that was meant for Jonathan he tells Jonathan not to blame Dio. Jonathan is considered naive (although in the Japanese manga it's not naivete from being dumb or easily fooled but a willful naivete where Jonathan chooses to believe the very best of people even when it doesn't serve his best interest to do so). He very much recognizes evil when he sees it and he's even merciless towards those who hurt others and show no remorse. Even Dio whom he cried for after he thought he had killed him he went with the intention of killing him knowing Dio was rotten to the core. When he was with Speedwagon and the Ogre Street gang he pretty much wanted to avoid a fight and him showing empathy for them and mentioning them having families they need to get back to it's what wins Speedwagon over. And I guess he wins the other guys too because they appear at the end of Phantom Blood saying goodbye to both Jonathan and Erina for their honeymoon.
Speedwagon cracks me up. First of all his name, then how he becomes so loyal to him after this fight and his unending praise for the Joestar family. The fact that he's voiced by the same voice actor as Hisoka is icing on the cake. If they'd stuck with Hisoka's voice but with a British accent I'd be so done.
through good manners and being a gentleman, he gained a lifelong companion. Jonathan is compassionate, caring and devoted. We need more people like him in this world. 'He's a gentleman through and through this one' - Speedwagon
Sadly being a gentleman is a dying art. Guess having trust between families like the wagons and stars that go till the heat death of the universe would be kind of dangerous anyways.

I love that Oger street isnt a place where people will beat you or kill you for your money or clothes, but where people run at you and do flying knife attacks, throw odd job hats at you and have big hordes of people with farming equipment to back up three guys. Only in JoJo.
Here we have Ichigo Kurosaki, being warned by King Leoric, not to go to Ogre Street, wherein dwells the street gang led by Torbjorn, while Scorpion drinks wine and laughs at his rival's impending doom. Nice.
I mean, the london street thugs are alright but Jonathan hams up every single line of his. His "resolve" line was not badass in the slightest because he puts too much emphasis on his lines in an attempt to sound posh.

Speedwagon: Starts out as a common street criminal, ends up as a billionaire funding a foundation
Joestar family: Starts out as rich aristocrats, ends up being criminals
Well you really can't keep fortune forever but in exchange for fortune they got the speedwagoon foundation
_Coincidence? I think not_

Joesph was a wealthy real estate owner himself. He had a big fortune as well
Speedwagon has an excellent vocabulary for a thug.
Gentlemen could've been thugs back then, there was etiquette and everything, a lot of emphasis on form in Victorian England

Plus Johnny Yong Bosch showed his skills as a voice actor as Jonathan throughout Phantom Blood.
I wonder if Speedwagon ever came back after starting the Speedwagon foundation to help his old gang friends get a job?
+Achariya needs a blanket I'm sure he already did that lol
His two sidekicks were at Jonathan's wedding, so they kept in touch.
I wish I had friends as good as Speedwagon
It’s freaking Speedwagon. He hits the big time it’s only fair he brings his old gang along for the ride. They’re not crooks for the fun of it
You know it!

The thing about the dub for Phantom Blood and Battle Tendency is how they give the characters a British accent 😆❤️
They definitely did try to give the characters realistic accents based on their origins for the first two parts.

The crazy part about this is it's exactly how George was with Dario, but compared to Dario Speedwagon actually chose a path of goodness and saved his descendants assess.
Just imagine how much kinder and more well adjusted Dio would have become if his shit head of a father didn't abuse him.

'He's a gentleman through and through this one' - Speedwagon
Sadly being a gentleman is a dying art. Guess having trust between families like the wagons and stars that go till the heat death of the universe would be kind of dangerous anyways.
