    I'm irritated by that question "what about the work these people could do with the planet we have?", they don't say that about any other cutting edge technology, like "hey that's a nice car Henry Ford but who's going to take care of the horses?" or "hey that's some nice penicillin Alexander Fleming, but what work are you doing to stop overpopulation?" or "nice computer Alan Turing but have you thought about all the human computers and code breakers you're putting out of work?"
    This type of question is the most pointless unproductive thing to ask.

    • @macioluko9484
      @macioluko9484 5 років тому +16

      Absolutely right! I think it comes from an envious point of view. As in "I never did anything risky or groundbreaking so how dare you do it when we still have a homelessness problem?"
      As noble as it is to help the less fortunate it can't be all that we do.

    • @Thinktank95

      I wholeheartedly agree, it's downright egregious to human spirit and ingenuity to ask these kinds of questions. It's a deflection and little more; learning how to live on a planet as horridly inhospitable as Mars will only strengthen our understanding of planetary and habitation science, geo-engineering, energy, food, and health sciences, among many others. Consider that the solar panels people power their homes with at this very moment came out of research efforts from NASA decades ago; progression of science yields considerable fruit.

      It's a matter of perspective. People who ask these types of questions simply haven't seen the bigger picture yet. They will with the right guidance and it's important to not respond negatively but rather explain to our best abilities how to see it. It's hard...

      I love your optimism. Obviously, you’ve just landed on planet earth. If not, you would’ve known that our society (or the masses) has always been more interested in “entertainment” more than philosophy (the love of the sciences). You ought to know that the world doesn’t have that many individuals interested in rocket science, human ingenuity, and exploits. You wanna see that many views, go watch the sports channels, the Hiphop channels, prank channels, cat videos, celebrity feud videos, Kim Kadarshian’s butt, reality tv shows, and any video where men are being condemned and sentenced for women related violations, which they may or may not have done. However, your optimism might spark a change.

      You may not be watching SpaceX as closely as some, so this may be news to you: They recently changed the material the BFR will be made of from carbon fiber composite to stainless steel. This has actually accelerated their progress. It also means one less giant technological hurdle to overcome. From what I've heard about her personality, I don't think she actually cares about gender in hiring, I don't know what this front is on for. She manages some of the most competent people in the world. It is very difficult to find people who are very good at rocket development. There is no room for identity politics in that kind of business.

    • @expression3639
      @expression3639 4 роки тому +9

      I think you missed her point entirely. She cares because it's important to have different points of view coming from people with different backgrounds. That's how you come up with the best solutions. If there are not enough people from different backgrounds in the field, then you lose on those points of view. For innovation companies, that's bad. She says that this should be obvious and thus, that diversity should be a non-issue.
      However, it is an issue because women still face discrimination in those fields and couple that with the various cues that society sends to girls as they grow up which veers them away from STEM and the result is that women get discouraged from taking up studies in those fields. If there are fewer women in a field, there will be proportionally fewer of them who are very good in that field. What this means for SpaceX is that they have to compromise either on diversity or competence because the numbers are skewed.
      You say that there is no room for identity politics in that kind of business, but it's discrimination and crappy gender stereotypes that have no room in that kind of business or in our society for that matter, and it's those things that invite identity politics in that kind of business.

Is it based on the population metrics of the state? The US? The Americas? The World? I'm not arguing for homogeneity (who would?) but forcing the spacex population to match some arbitrary statistic does not seem like a good idea. And lastly do the sexes have to be represented equally in everything? And as an example should we force more men into nursing and more women into bricklaying to make that happen? It has to do with genetic interests. Women are more interested in caring for people which is why there are way more doctors nurses and teachers who are women. Men are interested in building things, hence construction and STEM fields. Obviously there is cross over, and I love seeing women in STEM, but when we try to force a 50/50 split for the sake of diversity then we are missing the point which is personal freedom and equality of opportunity.

    As an industrial analyst who worked in the oil tool industry and materials science, i think that gender matters because it brings different skills to the table. When you have a female brain, you are wired for multitasking, male brains tend to focus and autistic brains tend to hyperfocus. So you need to analyse the job and see what you need. A welding boss was venting his frustrations because all of his nuclear grade welders could not stellite worth beans. But the problem was that they were very social persons who needed to have people by now and then so they could concentrate. In class we discussed how we needed a borderline schizophrenic female to do the job because she would be able to take the extreme isolation of the stelliter's job and do a fine job. I suggested this to the welding boss and found her near the time clock as we were punching out the next week. And she was a great stelliter. So think of the shape of the intelligences and what you want them to accomplish.

    • @christopherstube9473

      @@Daniela-pr7rz that is not what i am saying. I was recognizing that women and men are structured differently in several subsystems and that this has bearing on how they make decisions, and this can be useful in presenting them with tasks that they are well suited for and can show their prowess and be compensated for their personal skills. In the above case, there was no man that was suited for the job as they were unable to deal with the quiet corner and the shielding due to the extreme light of the arc. and the lady who did it was paid well for her capacity to deal with the problem. I did notice that her protective gear was first rate and her fine motor skills were what were needed along with her capacity to work unsupervised for long periods. When i go to play in a feminine harp circle as a male, i am often overwhelmed by the attention as i am an introvert and a rank beginner and i would rather stay in the background until my fingers have gained the skills to have something decent to show. But male harp circles are rare. And their attention on me is inadvertant since i am odd man out.

I think she has skills in Elon Musk management that he recognizes and needs and that the team is much more than the sum of its parts.

    Did I hear correctly? (rewinds) 2 months on a ship to Mars? So, does this mean they are working on a goal to shorten the current time it takes to get a science mission to Mars? This is enormous. First it used to take 9 months one way. Then 6 months. But plans for a 2 month journey? This would be a breakthrough. So looking forward to watching SpaceX and Gwynne Shotwell over the coming years. Very impressive leader.

I suspect this is internal as well: there are ideas and missions in each of our lives that are truly potent and can change our future. What we will have for dinner gets more attention but will be forgotten in a matter of hours. I think the cost of both habits is high.
