I had a 5 horse on a wood splitter that I was keeping/fixing and had to work on this type carb every blasted time I went to use it. I finally got very ill and sent it to it's other home and got a new one myself. People say they want to sell stuff but they really don't so I got a big one and now it's at the son-in-laws place and I'm out of the business. I still like Briggs motors but constant work on one leaves a bad taste in the mouth. In the 40's here this a.m. and all is well with you I hope. Calm and cool!
I had one of those back in the day use to find them at home Depot and Lowe's as we both know that those 2 stores are always changing up the outdoor power equipment that they sell
@@GuysPlayingWithTools I Saw that equipment at least one time at home Depot and saw a reel mower at.lowes you are right about the price of those edgers.home Depot and Lowe's as we both know change up the stuff that they sell the one thing I saw at Lowe's was the vertical shaft drive system edger it was the only one that was a hard to get the belt .on .I believe it was the Troy bulit edger I'll look it up and send you a picture of it
Nice job Bill. Working on those engines are a pain. The engineering department really dropped the ball on that challenge, but they still got paid! 🎥✌🇺🇸
8:50 I decided a while back that the pull rope shroud needs to come off first to get to that bottom carb bolt. It’s not extra work because you can lube the pull rope and clean out the mouse nest while you are there. Ask me how I know.
@@GuysPlayingWithTools with my hand and a half it helps to get extra room by removing the shroud. But my approach would have been to remove the muffler to access the carb diagram and replace it without removing the carb. If that didn’t work, then I would remove the carb. It would depend on how the tank looked. If the tank looked great, the carb is probably clean too and just needs a diaphragm. If it looked bad, full tear down and clean might be best approach.
@haneyoakie14 The tank needed a little attention too, so it had to come off. I prefer to pull the carb so I can give it a good cleaning in the ultrasonic. Plus, it's easiest to get the spring back in while it's sideways.
@@GuysPlayingWithTools I wondered about the tank. That style of tank is hard to clean and removal is often necessary to get a good cleaning. @thelawnmowerlady has the best technique using the clothes dryer.
Never had the opportunity to work on one of those. The only wheeled edger I came across was basically a 4 cycle 29cc weedeater engine put on wheels with edger in it. Just new fuel lines and tank clean out since they treated it like a 2 cycle.
I am not a fan of those tiny motor edgers, they don't have the oomph to make a line where there isn't one. The McLane edgers are pretty great, but not easy to work on.
Wow you’ve got a good collection of videos on mclane edgers. I just picked up one for $50 that is in really nice shape. Was missing the belt shields etc, but somebody was good enough to drain the tank. Replaced plug, air filter, blade, belt and the shields and it fired right up. Just gotta hope I can figure out how to replace the broken throttle cable, does r seem to be attached at the top or bottom 😂
Yeah, I love McLanes and I grab every one I see. 🙂 I have a couple vids that have good camera angles for the carb linkage on the McLane in the edger playlist . If you get hung up, let me know. I have tons of pics and footage that never made it to a video that show the linkage. 👍
These aren't weed eater carbs for sure. I do a lot of close ups when doing this style just for the people who might already have it apart without a picture. (Did you like the little camera flash at that part? 😁)
Thanks for the great video. I am a new subscriber and beginner at small engine repair. I have the same edger and cannot seem to figure out my problem. The edger starts on the first pull but the engine runs at top speed causing lots of vibration. I've replaced the linkage and still get the same result. It appears my calibration screw rotates when the edger is running. Any help will be appreciated.
Hi Anthony, welcome! I hope we get to start seeing videos from you too, there is plenty of room for all of us 🙂 Ok, about the edger. The carb is probably fine if it starts and runs, that means it's all about the throttle. I would start out by taking the side cover off(it's only 3 or 4 bolts) and getting a look at the governor. A bent rod or missing spring would do it. Also, take a look at carb shot at the beginning (or end) of the video and make sure your rods are in the right holes, there are options on some versions of this carb. I did this one mostly "top down" because the linkage is a pain in the... on the carb. the return spring on the carb would also do cause this, make sure it's in the right place too.
Oohhh Nooo, The garage was full, I mean FULL, there were hundreds of yard tools from the 70s and 80s, too old to save but fun to sort through. Dr Bill... I like it 🤣
You are welcome Mr. Tools. I am saying this to myself "Take off the muffler next"
The lift saves me money in jeans, I am bit wrecking the knees anymore. 🙂
Very cool piece of equipment
Thanks Randy!

It's 39 here this morning, with a high of 83, I love this time of year.
The carb setup on these is a pain, but they are great everywhere else.
Looking good sir.. Another vintage restore.. KEEPCUTTIN
Thanks! I love these old McLanes, they are the Mack trucks of edgers

I didn't know they ever sold McLane's, these edgers are pretty pricy compared to the usual box store stuff.

Yeah, 4 different engineers with 4 different ideas, and they didn't like each other, and they all got their ideas in the final design.

@haneyoakie14 Now, I would argue mine is better, vinegar, and let it sit overnight... poof, shiny 😁
Great show brother Bill 👏
Thanks! Next up....minibikes 😁
Good one Bill. It looks to be in great shape for sitting outside.
The bushes and vines were protecting it. Lol
Cool machine and it fired up 1st pull. TOP JOB.
I was surprised when it started that quick. That style usually takes 3 pulls after sitting. I got lucky (I will take lucky every time) 🙂

Just one of my favourite carbs to work on, glad you were doing this one a real pain but if the customer is paying the bill no problemo.
It was a "side bonus", I saw it while buying something else. I got a good deal on it though, and they sell great.
Another fine video Sir👍
Thanks Al 👍
Good job Bill 👍
Thanks! 😁

The engineer you wish you could fire yourself 😆 fiddly the only word for that carb ! First pull I mean c'mon !!! Your good man 💪
They are supposed to start first pull 😁
When I am working on this style, I always think it was designed by 4 engineers who didn't like each other
