This year, Danes had a good 4 weeks or so of just sun and heat every day, which is very unusual, and much longer than just a "weekend". My uncle in Fyn said he had to hose water his garden just to keep it alive. As an Australian too, the lack of air conditioning was unbearable, heat in Denmark is like the sticky humid heat you get in Thailand. Heat in Australia is dry and humid but not sticky.
As i always say, denmark seems to be perfect example of global warming. We aint the cold north anymore, sadly. And the heat is definitely getting worse by the year, in my experience

im sitting here, a dane, who just finished his last exam (yesterday) and got his "studenter hue" and wacthing you explaining things about danish culture. (even thing i did not know). and i am loving it. nice video, keep up the good work. hav en fantastisk dag :D
When I and my sister did studenterkørsel aside form top-ups for beer and other liquors and snacks, my mom had also prepared toothbrushes ("stolen" from her school dentist) and coffee. As I'm not having children I can't continue this tradition and I have no idea if my sisters will with their children. I just thought everyone should know that that move made her _immensely_ popular for the 10 minutes everyone was there.
How do you know you're not having children? I'm physically incapable of making a woman pregnant and yet I have two great kids - grown now - and six grandchildren.
Everything is so dry right now, so they say a lot of Skt.Hans bonfires will have to be cancelled. One place I think they might get a 'green light' is in Christianshavn, where they put a bonfire on a structure on the water in the canal itself. :)
Try to look at Danish weddings traditions. Ie. the first dance is always the music for the waltz from the ballet "A folk tale" (1854) by the Danish composer Niels Wilhelm Gade (1817-1890). While dancing the couple is surrounded by the guests. They slowly getting closer towards the couple in time for them to kiss at the end of the Waltz. The dance must be danced before midnight.
Not only is it bad luck to wear a studenterhue before you've taken the last exam. It's also said that if you wear it without being done, you will never become a student
I'll like to invite you to join the new old tradition - Julebukkeløbet. Its all the creatures of the dark comming together to party on the longest night of the year, singing and dancing to get the sun and the light back. Its on Strøget in København. Its 16 of december at 5 pm
The bands can change colors depending on what you majored in and if you got 12 in almost every class you'll get the black band, there is also one with flags on for having at least x amount of languages! So many types haha! Personally i did not go to the gymnasie so i never got a hat or a party, but i do wave to them! Though our neighbor had like 3 fucking kids that graduated 3 years in a row.. The summer was long and annoying as they also have a big yard to party in..
@@RobeTrotting Haha yeah that's way preferable, we do have hot summers here, but they are short And the midnight sun make you all jetlagged , we use blackout curtains and that kinda helps but your body still senses it's light outside at midnight in some way, your circadian rhythm gets all out of whack.
Glad you liked it. And the comment about April is that where I come from in the US, the longest daylight of the year is the same amount of daylight as Denmark has in April - if that makes sense. I know the entire northern hemisphere has the longest day of the year on the solstice in June.
When I see a Studentervogn, I think one year back to when I was out on that thing. Fun, I had so much fun doing it. I almost took my third year twice for the rides xD
I always find it funny that Sankt Hans is my half birthday, i like it for more than one reason, but one of them is the fact that its easier to remember when i have half a year left to my birthday
Yes, Sankt Hans eve is a cozy tradition, with the singing around a bonfire, but not when we're having a draught 😉 This year wasn't the first time, we haven't been able to have bonfire on Sankt Hans. We are mostly a country that gets a lot of rain, however, every once in a while, we have years with dry Spring and Summer, which causes fire bans.
Im from Denmark, and holy cow.. It was so funny to listen to! 😂 And.. Yeah.. You are actually not bad at danish, but it still sounds pretty funny when you speak danish! AND NO! The longest day in Denmark isnt in April! Its the 21 June! Your welcome!
He wasn't saying the longest day was in April, just that "past Derek" would have the longest day of his life by that point, in April. As far as I understood.
*you’re welcome! Og han siger ikke, at den længste dag i Danmark er i april. Han siger, at allerede i april passerer dagslængden dét niveau Derek er vant til hjemmefra og pointen er så, at den vil tiltage yderlige i længde over de næste cirka to måneder. You’re welcome!
I’ve heard that’s a blast! We were in Aalborg a couple years ago and loved it, we shot a video there too. We would probably do that if we had some kind of sponsorship to help with the costs and time involved - that’s why we film almost entirely in Copenhagen, so we can sleep at home for free and not have to travel haha 😊
No idea what you guys do for the Solstice, but you should stop by Reffen. Tons of people, food, party and fun. Also, working a few bars during the Pride this year, so a beer on me if I see you guys in my bar 🙂
We love Aalborg! Haven't been in a couple years, but you should check out the Rebild Festival for July 4th if you're available. It's pretty close to Aalborg and the biggest July 4th celebration outside of the States! 😀
Surprise! The Danish supreme court has just ruled that you are allowed to use other flags than Dannebrog in Denmark. Reversing a law that goes back more than 100 years. 🇺🇲
Ehh.. I checked Wikipedia, and they say "blåkulla" originally was a swedish variant of blocksberg/brocken in Sachsen-Anhalt. So, that was quite a good guess, I guess. ;-)
The studenterhue is actually remains of the same tradition as the americans getting the cap when they graduate college, both being the academic uniform at university, the difference is just in denmark you get the hat at graduating highschool so you have the hat before you start university, offcourse nobody wears it while going to university.
Absolutely - it would be so boring if every culture was the same. That's kind of the message behind this video; at first it seems confusing seeing all of these things, but they're really cool experiences and traditions 🇩🇰😀
I really like wide-eyed 2017 Derek. But 2023 Derek has all the knowledge. Interesting. I'm not going to try nude harbour swimming anytime soon, but these traditions don't sound weird, just different and interesting. Thanks for sharing. Btw, you might like to warn 2017 Derek about Covid. 😬
Wish you would have mentioned the singing. People sing together regardless of skill. It is common at the summer solstice and it has roots to protests toward the German occupation during WW2. It's also very common at Christmas and often used as a substitute for a speech at parties. Singing together is a thing in Denmark and probably more common at an amateur level than most other places.
I guess I wouldn’t have found singing all that weird, or maybe just not something I see in public more than other places. Although Estonians sing a whole lot haha.
Regarding studenterrundten, here in Esbjerg, we have a tradition, not sure if the copenhagen folks does this as well, but we have this roundabout where all the folks run naked around, usually the women have more clothes one unless they're frisky and don't give a single f, but the lads let it all hang out and run around that sucker while everyone is hunking their horns and congratulating them, it's weird as I live so close I can always hear whenever the students jump off that and do their run.
Some easy to spot with studenterhuer. 1 if there is a triangel cut into the sun protecter, they puked 2 if a box is cut into the sun protecter, they drank 24 beer in 24 hours. 3 if their cross is upside down, they kissed someone of the same gender 4 if the sun protecter has removed, they has been tovthe hospital because of to much alcohol 5 if their is bitemarks in the sun protector it is meant to mean good luck in life 6 if studenterhuen is rotarded means that you have been up 24 hours There are so many
I don't know if you'll find this out when researching studenterhuen but I'll just say it here. The black studenterhue has 2 versions - one for those with more A-level (Highest level in Gymnasium) than "needed" this one is hard like the white counterparts. I personally got a Black model based on the ones traditionally worn all through higher education as you told. It was also black, but is not limited to more A-level than 2 subjects. I don't know if it has changed - but when I graduated it was mostly for students with A levels in history or others that wanted to honor the history of the cap (as I did as my dad was a historian).
I graduated high school under the old system with only a small selection of fixed level combinations such as "languages - classic" (perfect for future historians and priests), "languages - modern", "languages + society" etc. and for the other half of academic pursuit "math + physics" (STEM hardcore) "math + nature" (more for future doctors, biologists etc.), "math + society" etc. Then they changed it into lots of elective course levels, with every university course setting its own entrance requirement combinations .
@@johndododoe1411 I was started on the first year of the new system - so that must be why it changed. I also took the black 18-something in remeberance of my dad who was a historian before he died when I was 12.
@RobeTrotting If you want to be better at danish pronunciations i believe I can help... I have autism, live in Copenhagen (born and raised in Denmark) and have a good understanding of where we pronounce different words... pronunciation can come from nose, throath, chest or stomach... Or a combination... Of course I wouldn't take money but would just like to help because we really do use weird sounds here in Denmark 😅 so i would kind of explain and show where/how we make the sounds to say fx "rød grød med fløde" 🙂
Let’s be honest - most traditions in Denmark are still being practiced either for the children or because we see it as a good occasion to drink. I mean, we kinda celebrate the first Friday of November because a beer (that isn’t actually a good beer) finally is being sold
On the Saint Hans witch: Its not uncommon to fill the effigy/witch with small fireworks - so she "screams" as she burns :) This year unfortunately due to drought and firehazard, no bonfires were allowed in all of Jutland.
"Long ass sunlight" 🤣 a classic American expression. Any chance someone can translate that into Danish? Keep up the fun and informative reports. Cheers.
Literal translation except changing Long and ass around for better flow : Røv lang solskin. Another translation which I would rather use for the context: Røv lang dag. Which would translate back into english as long ass day. The latter saying is more commonly used to refer to a long or exhausting work day, but with the right context can be used to refer to the longer days during summer.

Love your videos. I got a cool idea for a future video. Since now "Dragespringvandet" the dragon fountain is reestablished at Rådhuspladsen - I would like you to do a video of fountains and their history around Copenhagen :D
Cool idea! We could do some shorts on that for sure, but maybe a whole video.
Celebrating that you got smarter should be more common in all countries!
Had a camp fire last Saturday night here in Australia, remembering all the good times in Denmark.
Hilarious and loving view on Danes. Thanks for making me smile 😊
as a guy who was born in denmark its not that weird when u get used to it and learn the launguge and then u should get cumfortbal
im sitting here, a dane, who just finished his last exam (yesterday) and got his "studenter hue" and wacthing you explaining things about danish culture. (even thing i did not know). and i am loving it. nice video, keep up the good work. hav en fantastisk dag :D
Tillykke 😃🇩🇰 hope you’re having the time of your life celebrating!
nice one Derek.. your Danish is getting better.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed this one. And my Danish is… still rough but I can joke about it haha
:D I love when you do these skits/fun edits.
Thank you 😊 glad you enjoyed this one - it was interesting to learn how to edit it properly
So glad your back. Great video!
Thanks so much!
That’s a genius move that only a mother would think of ❤️😃
@@RobeTrotting Yes, indeed. XD
How do you know you're not having children? I'm physically incapable of making a woman pregnant and yet I have two great kids - grown now - and six grandchildren.

I lived in Norway, even though we had air con, we used the wood burners through-out the winter. When it is cold, fetch the logs
I want a bone set! This was very informative. Your videos are getting really creative, too.
My thought too! Instantly wondering: Can I get hold of a cow carcass? 🤣
Students wearing the studenterhue can get some discount in many shops and stores and online as well
Everything is so dry right now, so they say a lot of Skt.Hans bonfires will have to be cancelled. One place I think they might get a 'green light' is in Christianshavn, where they put a bonfire on a structure on the water in the canal itself. :)
The main concern is embers blowing away in a wide radius, so putting the bonfire on the water has little effect .
@@johndododoe1411
Ok
This was another fun video to watch. Great idea with the double Derek 😆😁
It is basicly impossible to get into the winter bathing place in Aalborg. So I think the winter bathing is atleast as popular is it was.
Aaaaaaaand...I'm off again to do some more outdoor drinking. I love summer...the entire weekend.
Me too! :)
Love Denmark ❤
You should try living in northern sweden , here its light 24/7 at the moment
No thanks haha 😆 but I do enjoy visiting Lapland in the winter
@@RobeTrotting Haha yeah that's way preferable, we do have hot summers here, but they are short And the midnight sun make you all jetlagged , we use blackout curtains and that kinda helps but your body still senses it's light outside at midnight in some way, your circadian rhythm gets all out of whack.
You two look in finest fettle, here! Life is obviously agreeing with you.
My favourite videos, from anybody, are always culture contrast ones.
Thanks again for an inspiring and entertaining video. ❤ A small thing though, the longest day and Sankt Hans is in June, not April😊
It looks so fun 🤩
When does the Sun set on the Summer solstice in Denmark?
I always find it funny that Sankt Hans is my half birthday, i like it for more than one reason, but one of them is the fact that its easier to remember when i have half a year left to my birthday
That’s convenient to break up the year for you 😃🇩🇰🥳
@@RobeTrotting very much😁
So you're a Christmas child? The name comes from St. Johannes the Baptist born half a year before Jesus .
@johndododoe1411 yeah december 23rd is my birthday:)
3:33 "Smile and wave boys, smile and wave"
Yes, Sankt Hans eve is a cozy tradition, with the singing around a bonfire, but not when we're having a draught 😉 This year wasn't the first time, we haven't been able to have bonfire on Sankt Hans. We are mostly a country that gets a lot of rain, however, every once in a while, we have years with dry Spring and Summer, which causes fire bans.
There were still a lot of beach and water-set bonfires in Copenhagen but I remember 2018 when we couldn’t even do those 😔
Im from Denmark, and holy cow..
@@glimt1808 Nååå, okay tak ;D
Great video. I like the guy from the past
Haha, he means well - I may bring him back for a video at Christmas
It would be cool if you ever made a video about carnival in Aalborg. It’s too late for this year, but it’s in late may
I’ve heard that’s a blast! We were in Aalborg a couple years ago and loved it, we shot a video there too. We would probably do that if we had some kind of sponsorship to help with the costs and time involved - that’s why we film almost entirely in Copenhagen, so we can sleep at home for free and not have to travel haha 😊
1.22 shot film is of Vienna, Austria not Denmark
Haha! "We burn Witches." That was a perfect delivery! Hilarious! Completely deadpan: "We burn Witches." Yeah!
Haha, thanks 😀 it was a pleasant surprise, I didn't realize how deadpan I was about it until I edited this and put them over each other LOL
No idea what you guys do for the Solstice, but you should stop by Reffen. Tons of people, food, party and fun.
Also, working a few bars during the Pride this year, so a beer on me if I see you guys in my bar 🙂
American in Denmark. Staying in Aalborg the shout out is lit haha
We love Aalborg! Haven't been in a couple years, but you should check out the Rebild Festival for July 4th if you're available. It's pretty close to Aalborg and the biggest July 4th celebration outside of the States! 😀
Hahaha cool - is the 2017-derek really Mike (the mimics...)
awesome video! did u think about such a video in 2017? Or how did u do it? :D
I actually shot the 2023 version first and then filmed the 2017 version and put them together while editing the video :)
You're so inspirational, it would make such a difference back here in Kenya. Am a mother pls reach out!!!!!!!
Surprise! The Danish supreme court has just ruled that you are allowed to use other flags than Dannebrog in Denmark. Reversing a law that goes back more than 100 years. 🇺🇲
Which is nice means I can now fly my Ohio and Grand Union Flag which I'll be Danish about and fly for Birthdays etc.
Swedish witches fly to blåkulla at easter... I wonder if there's any connection between brocken - blåkulla?
Ehh.. I checked Wikipedia, and they say "blåkulla" originally was a swedish variant of blocksberg/brocken in Sachsen-Anhalt.
So, that was quite a good guess, I guess. ;-)
fun video :)
They arre graduating from gymnasium they do the same in Sweden and Norway.
The studenterhue is actually remains of the same tradition as the americans getting the cap when they graduate college, both being the academic uniform at university, the difference is just in denmark you get the hat at graduating highschool so you have the hat before you start university, offcourse nobody wears it while going to university.
Older you: So what happens on the summer solstice in Copenhagen?
You now: We burn witches…
Older you: Say what!?
*Ad starts playing*
Nice 😄
Thank you 😊
Not weird, Danish 😁
Absolutely - it would be so boring if every culture was the same. That's kind of the message behind this video; at first it seems confusing seeing all of these things, but they're really cool experiences and traditions 🇩🇰😀
USA is the weird country!
Haha, I thought about making a joke like that, but it seemed too dark 😂
@@RobeTrotting oh dear. So you left it to me 🙈
Were did Mike go?
Nowhere, don’t worry 😉 he just has a lot of work travel before summer holiday starts - so filming has been harder for him.
I'm sure the saying " it is the best weekend in the year" is the optimistic people. I've heard that as "the best day of the year" too
Wish you would have mentioned the singing.
Liking the Eagles jersey!
1 if there is a triangel cut into the sun protecter, they puked
2 if a box is cut into the sun protecter, they drank 24 beer in 24 hours.
3 if their cross is upside down, they kissed someone of the same gender
4 if the sun protecter has removed, they has been tovthe hospital because of to much alcohol
5 if their is bitemarks in the sun protector it is meant to mean good luck in life
6 if studenterhuen is rotarded means that you have been up 24 hours
There are so many
“Who are they burning over there?” 😆😆😆👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Sadly, due to the recent drought, we won't be burning the witch this year, too bad, it's kinda like a communal barbeque in some areas.
Yeah, 2018 was really bad too
I don't know if you'll find this out when researching studenterhuen but I'll just say it here.
I also took the black 18-something in remeberance of my dad who was a historian before he died when I was 12.
this video has literally been years in the making
Heheh, six years 😆
@RobeTrotting
If you want to be better at danish pronunciations i believe I can help...
Oh it’s fine - I am only joking and making fun of myself a bit. I actually don’t want to get better, I own how bad I am, even after lessons.
Let’s be honest - most traditions in Denmark are still being practiced either for the children or because we see it as a good occasion to drink.
I mean, we kinda celebrate the first Friday of November because a beer (that isn’t actually a good beer) finally is being sold
😂 True, I do love J Dag though. I think I’ll pull 2017 Derek out for a Christmas reboot around J Dag haha

On the Saint Hans witch: Its not uncommon to fill the effigy/witch with small fireworks - so she "screams" as she burns :) This year unfortunately due to drought and firehazard, no bonfires were allowed in all of Jutland.
They still had them here
Midnight sun isn't in the far south of Denmark.
I know, I explained that to myself in this video 😂
"Long ass sunlight" 🤣 a classic American expression. Any chance someone can translate that into Danish? Keep up the fun and informative reports. Cheers.
Literal translation except changing Long and ass around for better flow : Røv lang solskin.
Another translation which I would rather use for the context: Røv lang dag. Which would translate back into english as long ass day.
The latter saying is more commonly used to refer to a long or exhausting work day, but with the right context can be used to refer to the longer days during summer.

I’m actually graduating this month🎉, and true to tradition I have not tried on my cap yet. There is a little thing you can do to ward off the bad luck, if you want to see if it fits right. If you try on your cap before your last exam, you have to put it on the floor and jump over it backwards three times, then you should be good.
