"We're gonna pop these in the freezer until they're firm enough to roll. How will you know? They'll be firm enough to roll! That is your main clue..." LOL this guy is hilarious.
I saw this video years ago and made these for my dad for father's day. He's requested them every year since and I've made them for him for him multiple times, and will for this Christmas too!
@@melodycook4561 "haven't this Christmas" so youur dad is dead? bc this is pretty simple and "He's requested them every year since" or you're now in a weird passive/aggressive relationship with your dad: "Maybe I'll make rum balls for you ... *_AND MAYBE I WON'T."_* you to dying dad: "Who's in rhe will? tell me ...if you want rum balls ..."
@op3129 if you can read, you'll see that I made them for Father's Day and he requested them for every *father's day* since. I happened to also make them for Christmas once or twice too, but now he lives across the country and they're harder to ship. I make them when he visits. Don't be weird.
Made these gorgeous and very easy rum balls for my guests to take home after dinner party. Came out great. Also made some small origami boxes for individual rum balls. Great recipe
Came back tonight for a how-to refresher- I've made these previously with bourbon, and they are marvelous! I'm thinking about trying a small batch with chopped up windmill cookies as well as the brownie batch, maybe with a bourbon cream liqueur as binder. Also, breaking the center tines out of a couple plastic forks works great for dipping & handling these things!
this is perfect. the restaurant i work at always has leftover brownies (cuz the brownie recipe they use is very meh) and they wanted me to come up with something to do with em. chef john you are a life saver.
Editors note: It actually takes twice the amount of rum to make these because to incorporate the rum into the brownies requires extra fortification for the mixer.
I'm 9 months pregnant and can not wait to try these soon!!!!! I'm dreaming up all different kinds of liquor to add.... oh boy , like replacing rum with peppermint schnapps, and instead of dark choc coating, use white chocolate then dust with crushed candy Caine! Oh the possibilities are endless! Chef john you never cease to inspire me!
LOVE YOUR HUMOR!!! it makes all the difference when I can hear the joy behind the cook !!! it's been a REAL PLEASURE ! thank you for sharing....I might have to use some raspberry rum in the ones I make for Christmas. LOVE IT XOXO Alma
WOW I used your idea to make these with raspberry rum.... unbelievable !!! they are so good !! you helped me bring a award winning dessert to the party ....THANKS
I'm just addicted to chef's voice - I think I would listen to the phone book (ups! dating myself) if he'd read it! I found this recipe about an year ago, and of course, I tried it a few times! brownies don't get stale around my house - I had to bake a triple batch when I first tried it. but all kinds of other cakes do: lemon-yoghurt (and limoncelo instead of rum), walnuts-coffee (brandy), walnuts-cinnamon (rum).... this is by now the go-to solution for any cake that goes stale! thanks chef john!!
Love these!! Made these twice for 2 different Christmas parties, 1st batch was too much alcohol and 2nd batch was perfect! Added a little less than the recipe calls for but were still great! Like a chocolate/cake/truffle! YUM!
tried this recipe! the results were my friends and family love it :) !!! i used rum and whiskey.. it's a very good combination! thanks chef john! you're inspirational!
I made these with 2 left over brownies (I hid them!) and 2 christmas cupcakes that I would have thrown out otherwise! I used Amaretto as the liqueur and had a mixture of 85% cocoa chocolate and a cheaper chocolate... it worked brilliantly and I got lots of requests for your recipe Chef John. We kept them in the fridge as they melt quickly and also away from children - as they are very boozy! Thank you for all the compliments you gave me by showing me how!
Could also be worth trying with Crème de menthe (mint liqueur). Oh, the possibilities! (banana liqueur, raspberry liqueur...) Thanks for the idea of the Grand Marnier!
This is probably one of the very first videos I watched for chef John about a year and a half ago, on all recipes.com. I loved him actually, but up until recently, I didn't know he had a youtube channel. Awesome!
@Food Wishes in my country we make rum balls with old chocolate cakes, then we set cherries in the middle. After we do that we coat it with chocolate and set coconut flakes around the outside! We consume these delicious treats on New Years and Orthodox Christmas. God bless!
What you said right after 4:30 was literally the best/funniest thing I've ever heard. Lol idk why, I think part of is your oh so spectacularly grand sounding voice.
I had some of these from a candy shop in the country that made all their own chocolates, and they are delicious. They also had some made with Amaretto, which was delicious. I can see these being really good using Baileys or Kahlua as well.
I just made them....they are incredible....thank you for the technique.!!! Just keep in mind that by the time you do the last balls the chocholate gets a bit cold and does tend to seize up a bit.
chef John i would love you to do a video about a cake that would be suitable for diabetics..if u have any great recipe..thing is i would like to bake for my mums birthday..she has health issues...but hey she could still enjoy a goodie.
I know foodwishes viewers will hate me for this but ... I'm eating these right now. I want to lie and say they're okay, kind of mediocre and you're not missing out. But I can't lie. They're awesome.
Oh my goodness! My grandma used to make at Christmas, as well as a stuffed dates. Th other thing she had on hand no matter what time of year was brandied fruit. Oh, how I miss her. 🌙💜
Thank you for showing us how to coat these balls. I was about to go and buy a whole bunch of toothpicks because I make chocolate balls over the christmas holidays and now I can just use two forks lol awesome.
Wow!!! How neat! My grandma was from Barbados. She made rum balls with imported rum, from Barbados, every year when we were young! However, I was subjected to a no-rum ball Christmas gift cookie tin because I was addicted to those delights by age nine!!! 😂😂😂! Wait. My grandmother’s rum balls were never chocolate covered.
The Mrs made a really delicious dessert using some rum balls. Take two Maria cookies and squish a rum ball between them. Then melt some really good dark chocolate and dip the cookie into the chocolate. Coat cookies all around. Let it cool and enjoy! Easy to do and soooo tasty! They look like miniature moon pies.
i made 3 times this rum balls and every time i had success thank you chef Jon Friday i will make a cake out of rum balls and choux a la creme maybe i will film it or make pictures and let you know how it worked :) best wishes Adriana
These have actually been a year-round tradition at Danish bakeries for decades. Though ours are 2" in diameter, and are covered with chocolate sprinkles...
"That firm, crisp chocolate coating...that soft, succulent, almost-like-a-chocolate-rum-ganache inside...that 'something special' to help your guests space out..." :likeaboss:
Yeah. I make no bake rum balls using crushed up vanilla wafers, flavored instant coffee you can add nuts they go in a hurry...last week I made black bean brownies that had the same consistency as these chocolate rum balls...I bet it would taste good with cherries and rum.

Who ever has leftover brownies lying around?
People on diet.
Well then they wouldn't have brownies lying around in the first place.
Padruig9 they had momentarily weakness.
And then another momentary relapse when they decide to make treats out of the stale brownies? Man, fat people just have no self control.
Padruig9 People are starving...Conscientious ppl don't want to waste food.
