Yo. Nice to see you ever so briefly yesterday - hope you had fun. I'm 45 minutes through this and have to stop to say a massive thanks for asking the crucial follow up questions on details consistently - how was that ring mod used on a film score, what did it look like, where did the layer logo come from, how did it work when Tom hooked up with ARP etc etc. Some absolute gold in here sir, it's top drawer. Also love how humble Tom is. The legends always are.
@@mylarmelodies Deserved. Watched the entire thing now and it's an amazing resource. Thanks for getting all the info on the SEM and related synths, that's really good to know. I asked Dave Rossum about his involvement at Machina Bristronica and he confirmed that he made the oscillators and that they were based on existing designs they had from the E-mu modular. He interestingly said that Tom paid for the patent for the digital scanning keyboard and then licensed it back to them to help them getting moving on it, because he needed it. I'd never heard that before. You'll have to have a go on my TVS-1 at some point, it's the best sounding synth I own and it is probably the optimum format for synth voices with no macro control. I can see why Tom rates it as his favourite. Anyway, thanks again!
I just bought an OB-X8 and love this episode’s in-depth history of Oberheim from the man himself! It was a fascinating watch and kept my interest. You were very patient as an interviewer to give Mr. Oberheim his space to speak without interrupting. Thank you for this great video.
We're lucky some of these guys are still around. Marinelli's recent vid on Mort Garson's old Moog, which he recently acquired is loaded with early Moog history too.
He was briefly mentioned in this one, but I'd love to hear you interview Dave Rossum. I am always delighted to hear how openly he talks about his designs and experiences.
Thank you Alex that was a really interesting interview. I think this shows why UA-cam is such a great platform for niche content. Well done for getting Tom on - this is important information for the history of music and normal TV would never devote enough time to it, or have a presenter with your knowledge of the subject.
I'm not sure what to focus on in a comment about this because the whole thing was so interesting. It's honestly astonishing that we live in a time so close to the invention of synthesis that the people who actually invented it and its most influential applications are only recently passed or even still living! Tom's story was wonderful and his memory for detail is incredible. I can barely remember what I did last week! Thank you so much for this episode.
You did a wonderful job. A perfect pod. Pure joy to listen to you both chatting so easily. Your respect is always there but you get him to feel very much at ease. Love it :)
An absolute insightful delight as always, congrats on the big 50. Im sure im not the only one who's been hammering the newest Floating Points album this autumn. Would make for an extremely interesting guest if you could get the Sam him self.
I’ve only watched 45 minutes of this wonderful discussion and I feel like I’d enjoy to have you guys and your families as neighbors. Well, as long as there aren’t loud parties I didn’t get invited to. Thank you both!
Thank you very much for the fascinating interview. Unfortunately, there came a time when I could no longer watch, but only listen - the multitude of picture cuts was a bit exhausting. You I probably didn't want the already long interview to be too long.
While the desire to own any of the legendary synths is not upon me as quite frankly, they are out of my budget, as a fan of history, this was awesome. Thank you.
I have stopped drinking for long periods of time over the last 12 years a few times, I am currently closing in on a year completely substance free and it feels great. As a long time sufferer of anxiety and depression, my central nervous system is much much better regulated, I’ve lost weight and gained the ability to show up for myself and others in a much more consistent way. Being substance free- 10 out of 10, would do it again.
I'm focusing/dedicating/investing in my 200e long term, but I would be swiftly onboard for an new, reimagined Xpander. Let's not hold our breath for an Ob-Mx collab w/ OB, Gibson, and Buchla though.
"If you've been keeping score, like I have, today's guest will require no introduction, as he is universally held amongst the greats." or "We got a champion on the show today lads!"
Great interview but miss the questions about Toms second company Marion Systems (1990ies) MSR2 etc , his work with CEM Dough Curtis, Toms time at Roland , DPX and Matrix6.
Great Pod! I’ve learned A LOT! By the way, I figured it out! I learned my rack before purchasing more modules and found out what I want to do and what I’m missing is… DRUMS! I’m going to build a 60 hp drum rack. I’m in between the LXR or the Blck_Noir right now. What would you recommend for a 60 hp drum build from scratch?
I’d get a separate true drum machine or a drum sampler like Digitakt and make kits from your modular first, just uber expensive to do it in modular when immediate off the shelf drum machines rule
@@mylarmelodies I finally took the plunge and went with the LXR, bitbox micro and a joystick2. Adding in the dfam. g-mom, mavis and a beatstep pro. I’m starting to build a pretty formidable setup! I know I could’ve went with the digitakt or something of the sort but, I use Ableton for all of the deep stuff. This is for more of a live, hands on approach. I’ve found that programming is terribly boring and that playing live is much more fun! Thanks for the feedback, sir! 🫡

Amen to that. Great interview! 👌🏻

UA-cam, get your act together. Not recommending me this video 2 seconds after its release is a clear sign of UA-cam slacking off. 💜 Thanks, mate!
Thanks so much for making this - loved the story of the making of the SEM
Thanks m8 👍
History..feat Dave Rossum, Dave Smith, Roger Linn.. Congrats Alex, and Bless you Tom.
Amazing interview. The history discussed here is just incredible. Thank you!
We're lucky some of these guys are still around. Marinelli's recent vid on Mort Garson's old Moog, which he recently acquired is loaded with early Moog history too.
Alex! What a wonderful and insightful interview! The PERFECT questions for Tom. I was riveted and loved every second. Thanks Mate!
My goodness what an amazing episode! Also, if I’m one tenth this fucking rad and sharp at 88 I’ll be amazed - this dude is incredible.
My thoughts exactly!!
He's so detailed in the stories he's telling, such a great listen!
This is absolutely fantastic, thanks to all for making it happen.
Thanks meit x

Interviewing him on Sunday(!!!) (No really, at Machina Bristronica)

Wow, fab interview! Thanks so much Tom and Alex.
Brilliant interview! Thank you!

Wow, Alex you lucky duck!!! Getting to talk to Tom, I’m so jelly! Great video bud, keep up the great work!
Excellent interview! Thanks for this.
"It's the sound..." Yes Tom Oberheim it most certainly is. Thank you for your amazingly eternal sound. Great interview as always.
Watching this from Tom's birthplace in Manhattan, Kansas. Fascinating to see how far he took things from here!
What a delightful man, a humble legend. Thank you both for this interview!
Very good interview, thank you for making it!
Congratulations on episode 50 - I've enjoyed many of them and look forward to more. Super, super, good, thank you! Go on!
I’ve only watched 45 minutes of this wonderful discussion and I feel like I’d enjoy to have you guys and your families as neighbors. Well, as long as there aren’t loud parties I didn’t get invited to. Thank you both!
Magnificent! What a joy. A great listen and a perfect celebration of your odometer rolling to 50. Congratulations!
A living legend indeed. ❤
This is like a youtube interview with Stradivarius or Guarneri.
Really enjoyed this WWB. What a lovely bloke Tom Oberheim is.
Fantastic video interview with a legend!
There goes the afternoon. Looking forward to digging into this one!
Thank you for this!!!

Oh shit. This will be good.
Nice interview with the OB-Master, thanks ❤ Another one with Dave Rossum? 😉
Hosted Dave Rossum for a talk he did this weekend!! Not a Bleep per se but some crossover, all being well it’ll go out before long
Brilliant interview! Would be great if the Pro Synth Network (PSN) team could one day get some time with Tom Oberheim on their show, too 🙂
great show!
Alterable arpeggiator is a nice touch
True story. I just restored my dead laptop from 5 years ago, and I had a tab open with the Why We Bleep 19 with Gaz. True Story.
Welcome back 🙌

We like Tom
"If you've been keeping score, like I have, today's guest will require no introduction, as he is universally held amongst the greats." or "We got a champion on the show today lads!"
I love every guest equally of course, but when you made Prince’s synths, that deserves special recognition
Yes.

Sounds like fun, now to learn it all and record some tracks!
Whatever happened to those Oberheim eurorack modules/rumours that were floating around a few years ago?
Nonsense...
What is?
