Good-day Robbie!👋 I grow my watermelon in containers too: totes and large pots. This year I decided to prune the vines on my second planting...they are doing well.😀 I succession plant my melons and cantaloupes to have plenty of melons to enjoy through the growing season.😃 Hopefully lots of folks (who haven't done so) take your advice and experience the joy of growing their own watermelons.😃 You have great looking plants and fruit! I imagine Gary has a lot of melons growing in his garden too.🙂 💕
Great info! I was so disappointed because I only had one Watermelon. Now I have a more realistic expectation and I even learned about trimming them. Thanks!
Robbie, thanks for this video. I've been a little sad that my sugar baby has only one melon. It's a nice melon, large and round and ripening slowly, but just the one. I thought I'd failed. Feeling better now! Thank you.
New Gardner. I have 2-1/2 gallon buckets for my sugar babies. My first one grew to a good size. I left it on an extra two weeks. It was so sweet. The others haven't been growing well. I'm glad I came across your video. I'll be taking a scissor to the overgrown vines. Next year - more seeds in 5 gallon buckets.
Hi Robbie. I have 2 seeds that I sprouted and I’m getting ready to plant them in a tote. I’m in Florida and watermelons are just too darn expensive. I’ve been watching your videos and now all I need is to pray that I can get watermelons from my plants. I’ve also taken to your sprouting methods. I have to agree with you that not all seeds will grow. I have a lot that would not sprout and I’m glad I didn’t just plant the seed in soil. The ways you’ve shown, you’ll be able to see roots and then a plant growing. I don’t know about you but I have been disappointed by seeds that I’ve put my time into that didn’t grow. I began my gardening journey about a year ago with NO knowledge, I was completely ignorant to what was needed, then I found YOU! Thank you for ALL that you do. You are a God send. Have a great evening.🤗
Your videos are awesome!! I just turned 60 last month and I am dreaming of getting a farmland and I find your videos short, and wildly interesting and easy to DIY activity for me. I do so appreciate you. Your videos are blessing 3rd world countries here in Asia and over mountains to people who dont know how to plant with their own resources as my knolwedge from yours are going to go up to mountains and the hlls. Much thanks!!! Loveyou!!
I second that. I've got about 10 watermelons. They're also sugar babies and they are huge! I've been trying to decide when to cut one, but the tendril is still very green, so I'll leave them longer. Thank you for the great advice, Robbie, so much appreciated!
My husband paid $10.00 for a watermelon from a farmers market near our home. Needless to say we didn't buy any more from there. I have never paid that much even for the biggest watermelon I have ever bought. It's been years since my husband and I grew watermelons but this encourages me to maybe have some next summer.
Ty Robbie :) first year growing in containers. Was doing great till bugs. Spraying with hot sauce mixer but leaves are being eaten. Learning a lot from you ty Lord bless !
Thanks for the video on watermelon. I have 3 watermelon in one bucket. Never grown watermelon before. Im so excited because I have baby watermelons on the plants. So far, the plants are looking great. But, I'll be keeping an eye on them. This video was very timely.
All melons are expensive in stores . We have seen watermelon, non organic, for up to $10 each . I know a farm stand where I can get great , huge , organic , sweet melons of any kind we want for less. It is worth the 45 minute drive to get them . What I don't try to grow myself . I have one large watermelon on a volunteer vine and tons of sugar babies still out there. I planted 7 plants , 1 or 2 melons grew on most . Some vined over into my house plant pots and rooted . I cut them loose from the original plant and now they are growing and producing great little melons . My grand baby watches the tendrils and lets me know they are brown . Then she tells me "but don't pick it yet , Robbie said we have to wait a week". She also loves your videos , she loves gardening with Gammy . I started her out there as soon as she could walk and stand . Now she helps me plant and harvest .
Thank you for sharing these helpful tips!! I have bought three $7.00 watermelons this summer, but I plan on trying to grow some in totes next year. Do you know if totes would bust if they got freezing rain in them? We get snow and freezing rain and our temperatures can get down in the teens, and sometimes in the single digits.
This was very helpful. I have 4 watermelon plants growing, 3 in totes and 1 in the ground. And at least one watermelon on each one. Some have more than one. My first watermelon split after a really heavy rain so I’m hoping that doesn’t happen again.
SO far, I have yet to find the Sugar Baby Vines develop any roots when I cover some of the vine with soil....that is not to say they will not, but here so far nothing strong enough to grow fruit.
Hi Robbi, How often should I be giving my veggies plant tea, just want to make sure I'm feeding them enough or too much. Usually I give them tea every 3 weeks. I gave them plant tea last week and it been extremely HOT here in Mass. Two weeks plus of 90+ degree weather, nights not below 80's. Don't want them to die from lack of nourishment. Time to water the garden now, it's after 6pm. LOVE LOVE your videos.
That is ALWAYS my biggest problem, deciding when something is ready for harvest! Just bought a watermelon not ripe enough when purchased the one before it was supper sweet. I have a watermelon growing in ground that hasn't started producing flowers yet. So I'm hopeful.
Oh wow! A lot of helpful advice. I'd like to see the camera slow pan over the whole melon trellis system. I don't pretend to be the brightest visual learner on the light string. How tall is the tallest vertical metal green stake in that system?
So many good tips Robbie. I'm growing two watermelon plants in a recycled blue box and one beside it in the ground. I'll definitely prune them back once the melon is there. Is there a possibility that something could go wrong with the melon and then you'd have nothing? Is it better to have all least one other melon starting on the same plant just in case? 🤔 Oh boy, I'm waffling 🙄
Sugar babies are so different than growing Texas stripes. I had only one Texas stripe plant last year and got about five large melons. Granted, it took up a lot of space.
Hey! Wife and I follow you. We have around 100 hummingbirds each year. When the nights start to get cool. They travel a little ways from Augusta GA to Florida. HUGE QUESTION PLEASE: WEhave 8 feeders we clean and refill daily. WE HAVE HONEY BEES TAKING OVER. I WAS TOLD THE FEEDERBRAND HAS FEEDERS THAT WILL NOT LET BEES GET NECTAR FROM FEEDER. WE CANNOT JUST BUY FULL REPLACEMENTS. (DO YOU KNOW A SOURCE WHERE I CAN BUY THE FLOWER YELLOW FEEDER PART SEPARATELY AND SWAP THEM OUT FOR BEE PROOF PARTS? PLEASE ADVISE. AL / PHOEBE
@@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy I don't know, next morning when checking again, apparently the Raccoons had had their way with them. They got all my grapes the night before. :'(
Hi Robbie
Were you starting new plants with cuttings? If so can you share?

Thank you for more great information! I’ve never grown watermelon, but want to and this information will definitely help me.
Depending where you are, do not bother starting them Outside TOO early, make sure your nights are on the warm side, Glad this can help! Thanks
I love your watermelon chair Robbie! You always inspire me with your creativity! :)

I agree. I love watermelon in different ways to prepare and eat.
Thank you Robbie for this great information🥰
I think I need to do the same thing with my winter squash. Thanks for advice!
Thanks so much. I am looking forward to trying these ideas.

I would say the only thing that may crack a tote is weight, if you can cover them since they may not drain, you should be fine.
@@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy Thank you! I think I will put the lid on them just to be on the safe side.

If the vines were on the ground they would develop roots which provides the nutrients as the vine gets longer.

I am giving the Watermelon and Zucchini the Tea 1-2 times a week with all this growth right now. And of course plan water daily too. Thank you!

Good video. Trimming the plants was very educational. I do have a question. On average what is the diameter of a ripe sugar baby melon.

Try Amazon I bought some on there the beginning of the year. 😊🙏❣️
If the vine trails on the ground they would throw roots along the vine like squash,my guess.
🤔☝️girl! ya know! You could make a fortune with growing them in various shapes.😉✌️☕💖👍😎🙂
I have a bin like yours I have 3 plants is it ok or I need to take one out I have a long container 30 gallon. They are the jubilee
What kind of tubing are you using for your watermelon trellis?
How would you use this two part system when it gets freezing cold where you live
Cantaloupe growing in containers? Thank you always
If i ever grow watermelons, i willremember to wait one to two weeks after the stem turns brown.
Mine hasn't produce any female flowers, what is going on?? The bucket within a bucket composting is a good idea.
Do you grow baby pumpkins?
Mine split when it rained an inch in one night!
I am sorry, if not ripe, can you wrap the fruit in something?
