My first airbrush was the Badger 150 that I inherited from my dad. I found this a temperamental airbrush. It would start messing about half way through painting a model and instead of painting I was stripping cleaning and fault finding on the airbrush. On the advise of another modeler I bought an Iwata airbrush and it is really good. It has no fiddly Teflon seals or "O" rings and has worked faultlessly for many years now. It was expensive but I guess technology has moved on and many cheaper airbrushes are just as good now.
Allan, when you say there are no 'o' rings - are there none at all? That's the only part I've had to replace in any airbrush, so that sounds promising.
@@ModelNerd Hi, Yes my Iwata has no seals in the nozzle section. There may be some in the air valve but I have never needed to disassemble that. All I generally need to do is remove the needle and unscrew the nozzle. A spanner is supplied to unscrew the tiny inner nozzle but that is not generally necessary unless you have a particularly bad blockage. I generally use Tamiya acrylic paints and have found that Wynns carburetor cleaner (available from Halfords) destroys this paint so a quick squirt of this into the airbrush after painting will clean out the airbrush without disassembly. The only paint I find a pain to clean out of the airbrush is Vallejo as I have never found anything that totally dissolves this. Carb cleaner leaves small globules of paint that block the airbrush so I never spray this paint.. It is good for brushing though.
That's really interesting - thank you. The nozzle 'o' ring is the one I've had to replace a couple of times. (luckily it came supplied with spares). Vallejo paint is strange, isn't it? It's actually quite soft and easy to scratch when dry, but man it can go gunky and thick with a lot of thinners and cleaning products.
@ I totally agree about Vallejo paint. I sprayed my CSM Caudron GIII model with Vallejo as it was the nearest colour I could find. Whilst continuing with building the model and handling it the Vallejo paint was wearing off the wing edges and other bits. I really don't like it but it does brush on and cover well so it is good for interiors and detail parts whereas Tamiya acrylics don't brush and cover well at all.
I decided to buy one just before Christmas. Personally love how good it is for the money. I don’t own any harder and steenbeck airbrushes or any other brand. First airbrush I bought was the gaahleri ghad 39 with a .35 and .5 needle nozzle sets. To be honest I can’t fault them. I did however have the needle stuck inside the möbius when I opened it. Managed to force it out but damaged the needle packing screw and seal which they sent me a replacement within a couple of weeks so hats off to them! Great bit of kit for the money!
That's great to know you've had a positive experience with them. After my H&S airbrush eventually broke I realised that, although probably an easy fix / reaplcement part, I realised that I didn't use it much anymore anyway. The build quality and the ease of strip-down on the H&S are good, but I like the trigger restrictor and pressure valve too much now! :)
@ yes I dealt with a great lady over email. Basically the needle packing screw was too tight from the factory and the needle was wedged in. Upon finally getting the needle out the packing seal was knackered and the screw itself had a tiny piece of swarf distorting its shape. They sent me a new packing screw and seal and a new nozzle and needle kit. Came from the USA in 10 days from first email. Customer service doesn’t get better than that these days! Currently using the mobius on my copper state models Minerva build and it’s great for the smaller model to add shading and mottling effects with. Air pressure at around 15 psi and just slightly crank the airflow adjustment down on the airbrush and nice thin paint gives a great effect. Especially the ammo shader paints im using for shadow detail!
That's great to know. Any company can mess up, but it's how they deal with it that counts. I remember the issues I had with my HK Models Lancaster, when customer service offered me a free replacement for the damaged fuselage half...and then never replied ever again. I haven't bought a HK kit since. Good service counts!
Fair assessment Sir. I've been looking at this brush myself for a while, you stated it's no H&S Ultra. A great brush, a great servant I have one also. You realise paint thinning, air pressure and atmospherics - think you paint in your garage? Apologies if i have that wrong, all play their part in results. Probably a bit more practice with it will help too. I'd probably go with Tamiya paints thinned with levelling thinner and play with the air pressure more. Thank you for the review, I found it useful, even if others have not. Happy new year.
Thank you Steve - I appreciate that. Yes, I paint in the garage (and by necessity the doors is always a little bit open so I can vent the booth), so the weather does play a role (same for 3D printing). I do avoid the coldest days (plenty of those recently), but it can still have an effect. Tamiya acrylics are definitely the most forgiving paints I've tried (I haven't tried their lacquers); AK Real Colours, which I used here, are pretty good in that respect too.
Hello dear friend, Like you, I'm only used the brush during the first year of work, but I bought a good airbrush a long time ago. Soon I will use it. Bye.
I have Gaahleri advanced ghad 39. Bought it in 2023, as the "beginner". They are build good, wont say "cheap" as someone says in the comments. I always have struggles with vallejo primers as it gets clogged very easy. Literally every 10-20 seconds of spray it would get clogged. That gave me alot of headache because I was blaming gaahleri and vallejo. So I bought recently Iwata eclipse and 0 problems, love it !! So let me tell you about airbrushes if youre new to this, DONT BUY CHEAP airbrushes. Better SAVE and buy GOOD, trusted by communities airbrushes like Iwata.
I'm sorry to hear you had that experience. As I mentioned, I had no issues with this so far (and indeed, have had none with the very similar Neoeco airbrush I reviewed over a year ago).
I'm sad that you have had some very unreasonable and inaccurate comments on your review. I have seen other reviews of the Gaahleri Mobius models and there appears to be a feeling that the 0.3 model is better than the 0.2, but individual items may vary. I'm very tempted by the 0.3 model, but I do seem to be becoming an airbrush hoarder. Best wishes.
Thank you mate, I really appreciate that. A lot of people don't realise that I turn down the vast majority of offers from companies and only include stuff I genuinely think will be of interest to people. (I get offers of 3D printers several times a month, last week I was offered a $500 RC car, and once I was even offered a $20,000 luxury Italian leather sofa for review! But none really fit into my channel's topics.). I wonder what the difference in use would be between a 0.2 and 0.3? Probably not noticeable for most things - you could even argue that the lines I painted in this video were a bit too narrow for the camouflage. I notice the 0.3 is also 10 USD cheaper.
It is mate. The "paid promotion" (which is what UA-cam calls any kind of sponsorship/freebie) box is ticked, and has been since upload. You should get a note of this when you first load the video. Does it not appear?
That's odd. I appreciate you bringing it to my attention, but I just opened the video in an incognito window and the "Includes paid promotion" appears for me in the top left at the start of the video. Maybe an add-blocker is blocking it for you?
Your going to say a Gaahleri airbrush is better than a Harder and Steenbeck???? Lol You're clearly getting a kickback or free items from the Gaahleri company. But no way in hell is that better than a Harder and Steenbeck!!! PERIOD!
Where did I say that? I said I like the trigger restrictor and the pressure valve on both this and the Neoeco airbrush I reviewed previosuly...which my H&S doesn't have. Better is subjective and depends on a range of variables, but saying "no way in hell" doesn't add evidence either way. I've mentioned the features I like...what is it you like about the H&S? And yes, I am clearly getting a free airbrush from Gaahleri - as I said in the video...
Dude, did you watch the video before commenting?? He literally said he was sent the airbrush and the video is marked as "promotion"!! And he never said anything about one or the other being "better". Maybe you need to learn to listen properly! Lol
Up until 2024 with the all new Evolution and Infinity, I found all Harder & Steenbecks basically unusable out of the box, with horrendous trigger response and feel. Every one of my H&S airbrushes required complete trigger and air valve spring replacement to be usable. Total junk at any price, let alone $300!!!!

I have the GHAD 39 and it's a vast improvement on my old airbrush, easier to use and easier to clean.
It's definitely handy having a couple of needle/nozzle sizes too, I bet

You need to mark your video as sponsored. You got two freebies & need to declare it as such.
