I just call it two finger thumb lead. It's tough at the beginning, but now I'm working on dropping extra notes and working the melody higher up on the second string instead of on the first. I'm starting to get the hang of it. This would be good for Okinawan songs like Asadoya Yunta, but don't tell the traditionalists. Only the approved music is allowed.
Hi Colin, great vid. Bought a Vega Old Tyme Wonder a while back to learn Clawhammer. I play Tenor and just fancied a change ! In Between clawhammer exercises, when noodling around, I found myself naturally falling into a two finger style, so hope to see more vids in the future
You can use a capo or simply change the tuning to the key that you need. You can use this finger pattern with any tuning, as long as you figure out where the melody notes are.
Colin Bazsali I've heard many styles of banjo and as a blind man I find this style very beautiful in its simplicity. I am an inspiring banjoist so to me this style offers heartfelt melody and a quiet grace. I was wondering for this tune is it in G tuning? G G D B DThank you so much for the instruction and your vocals and banjo are superb sir!
I first learned this style in Pete Seeger's How To Play The Five String Banjo, in his chapter on double thumbing. Listen to his version of "Darling Corey," or B.F. Shelton's original recording. It's in the book.
+Tradwoodworker42 Thanks. Yes, here's the tab for clawhammer: drive.google.com/file/d/0B8KdjTZa9i5OVmtaS1l3REwyc00/view?usp=sharing I don't have one for 2-finger.
You're one of the best banjo tutors I've come across on UA-cam, great attitude and no showing off, much appreciated.
Thank you, John, that's a very nice compliment.
I go back with you to you're Seeger Style videos and consider you best Banjo instructor on UA-cam. I've learned so much from you!
Thank you very much!

This is the key to old time banjo, *all of it" Simply pete the 2 and 4 are on the 5th string always. The rest will work itself out. Thank you!!!
???
I love that style I like how smooth and how laid back it sounds. For me I'm have to play a little softer. Plus I like the more mellow sound.
Merci Colin, je regarde régulièrement tes vidéos, c'est très généreux de ta part de partager ton talent.
+Teddy Locquard Merci beaucoup!
You are a marvelous teacher sir
Thank you! I'm glad to hear that.
I love the 2-finger style. There's also the index finger lead, but I prefer thumb lead.

Do you have a version of you singing this full song somewhere I can download off the internet? I like your version best. Oh good lesson too.
No, I don't, but thanks for the compliment!
Is this the two finger style String Bean used at times when he wasn't playing clawhammer on the banjo...?
I'm not familiar with his style of playing, so I don't know.
Do you have a tab book recommendation for this style?
