Honest and fine presentation of the Yamaha "silent" hybrid nylon string guitar! I love mine for sure. Classical and jazz guitarist. It is light, no feedback when amplified, the nylon strings are resonant and warm, plus you can modify the sound along a spectrum from piezo pickup to the tone from the finest Yamaha classical guitars. And you mentioned that it can be "broken down" for traveling, though I could not take it on an international flight for the overhead bin. Nice playing!
So happy to see the nylon version, I've played a classical guitar for many years in all types of settings and all types of music, I'm also a Hugh Willie Nelson fan. I've been checking out this guitar for some time now I think it's time to pick one up. Thanks for the great demo
I play mine at church through a Yamaha THR30II with the Line6 wireless option. Yes it's a small building with maybe a 200-person capacity, so I get away with this setup. That said this is such a transportable solution and sounds great whether finger-picked or played with a pick. The effects are a tremendous adder and I just love that I have such control over my sound. And yes it's a great practice solution to keep the peace with the family, but it's also giggable, in case there were any doubts.
I'm writing tunes on my silent guitar. My lyrics are about thought provoking concerns, to try to get listeners to think after they hear about my home having received a threat of being set on fire by a narcissist, even though arson never really causes its victims to float off to a happy land in the sky. I have about 35 guitars now, and they would burn if many smiley willfully ignorant delusional narcissists were able to know who and where i am. What do you think, does the yamaha silent guitar get even more silent if mine ended up burnt to a crisp? What is the sound of willful ignorance, a mute button on a multi effects pedal board? Ah yes, music. Its like books. You can write lyrics about how the 9/11 hijackers sent their victims to a smiley happy place, right?
Great job on the presentation. I owned one of these for a couple years. It was really convenient for plugging in at night with headphones and using my iPad to play along with Spotify. I used it in church for soft finger pieces and it was always a conversation starter. Great tones too. I just couldn’t get past the wider neck. If it had a more narrow neck I would still have it.
Thank you for this fantastic demo. I have my Dad's 70-year old custom Spanish guitar that I absolutely cannot take on gigs. I love playing guitar, but the frustration and hassle of dealing with EQ and feedback has always been a big demotivator... until now. Great playing, and even better analysis. Thank you!
Great Demo Cooper -- I've seen pix of the steel string and wondered what was going on. I agree that the nylon version is awesome and allows you to do a ton. Thanks
"I don't know why they didn't just kick it up one more 32nd of an inch" -> The reason for using 1 and 31/32 inches is pretty reasonable: nut widths, wood widths, etc. in most countries are now done in millimeters, not inches. 3/4" ply is usually 18mm or 19mm, not 3/4! The nut on the SLG200N is actually 50mm, and it is 52mm on the NW. A two inch nut would have been 50.8mm ... weird! ;P
Hi -- I'm very impressed by the sound of this guitar, and I'd like some advice on something. I play in standard tuning, but tuned down to D-flat. Do you think this tuning would sound okay in terms of resonance on this guitar?
Great demo again man! You're an amazing player and the guitar sounds great. It does sound out of tune on some of the chords. I highly doubt the guitar was actually out of tune given your level of playing, so I suspect it's because of the temperament of the strings. Many guitars seem to have that issue. Especially shorter scale length ones like Gibsons. I love the sound of nylon string guitars, but I often find them hard to play due to the high action and wide boards, and I also often find them hard to play in tune. I'm not sure if it's because of the different gauges of strings, the softer tension, the higher action, the shorter scale length, or something else. Ideally I'd like the feel and playability of an electric guitar, with the sound of a nylon string guitar.
I had a buddy who was trying to sell one of these a couple months ago and I passed on it because my mind simply was not enlightened enough. Now I understand that I missed out, lol
I was impressed at how the neck feels on my first edition yamaha silent guitar, though the high E string sounds alot closer to being silent when its plugged in. I may consider performing guitar bridge pickup surgery, see about adding a tiny condenser mic right behind at one quiet string. Right now, that one string requires a powerful plucking and even then its still half the volume of the other strings. This concern may or may not be an issue on later editions of the yamaha silent guitar. Has anyone else noticed this too?
Thanks for the demo. Does the gig bag have any stiff foam in it to protect it. I'm just wnondering it it could be placed in an overhead bin on an airplane.
My guess is that it's just the preamp of the Fishman pickup itself being run through a direct line into the audio interface with no post-production adjustments. That would be the most fair way to demo this, and sounds pretty accurate.
Hi Cooper, a newbie to the guitar world and really enjoying your channel. Just wondering if you have any thoughts on the McPherson Touring guitar? Would be interested in your thoughts if you have. Thanks, Dan
So if anybody here actually uses this guitar (or the slightly wider model 200NW): can you practice with it silently in a city apartment situation with "paper walls" where you hear every toilet flush from everybody level the night through? I mean: is it really quiet enough to not piss off anyone? My classical definitely is not, even when I play it as silently as I can, it is still too much late at night. Any comments appreciated.
This model guitar does have a radiused neck. The other classical silent guitar has a wider flat "classical" neck. When not amplified, the guitar is relatively "silent" enough., One can listen with headphones "silently" and the guitar amplifies nicely with a quality PA. Good for recording and eliminating fret board noise.
I've watched a few demos of this guitar... and everytime the guitar was out of tune. I don't know if it is a coincidence, or maybe this guitar is hard to tune. I was about to buy one, but I am not so sure anymore. Anyone can chime in?
Can't quite put my finger on it, but it' doesn't sound good to me. Godin set the bar quite high for stage electric nylon, and I'm afraid the Yamaha doesn't even come close. That said, it's also less than half the price of the Godin.
SMOOTH soudning guitar... wow... like silk. If only I didnt have an Acoustasonic... mayb need to pick this up anyway. Will go to Alamo MC online if so.
i always hated nylon guitars cause of how awful they are to play but threw caution to the wind and got the nylon of this cause its different and the nylon through the chrous etc and the playability just makes it cool and unique
Just my opinion but I must say I like hearing you play the steel string. You are an excellent musician. The thing that I do not like about nylon string guitars is it sounds like they are out of tune when they are being played. This drives me crazy. the slightest string bend throws the tune off. The reason I don't own one. Nothing against your playing.
@@pablominelli4305 I did not. I bought a used silent for travel practice, not crazy about it but it works. Better than the mini travel models as it is full scale.
I have had both. Both are great, but they are very different. The Cordoba is much louder - though it is slim it's got a really resonant top. If you need to be quiet in your practice I'd definitely go for the Yamaha. For gigging I think the Cordoba will win for many people as it has a more natural sound.
why 1 and 31/32 and not 2 inch? Because its Japanese and like the rest of the civilized world they use metric and it equals 50 millimetres. :P love the N sound though. I don't have a nylon in my stable but I'm rather tempted by this one.
That out of tune G string is killing me I don't know why nylon strings guitar commonly have this issue, no matter how well you tune them. G strings are stubborn I guess hahahaha . Love the playing though.
Try 3 Bridge Tele’s 😮 Some classical guys will use a wound G instead of nylon for multiple reasons, I have not tried it yet. If the guitar has fresh strings it takes classical strings a bit of time to settle in
Thanks for the review of a very interesting guitar. Little bit of gratuitous advice - don't make your audience wait through 8 mins of chat before we get to hear the guitar!!

Godin guitars.

Awesome sounding guitar and as always great playing.

5:15 The nut width is 50mm which is 1.9685 inch
These are awesome guitars. Any sceptics out there should try one.
Id love to see an SLG- S with a slightly wider neck.
Thank you, Cooper, awesome demo. I would consider buying that kind of guitar. I loved the sound potential, something I could aim for.

The reason for the wider nut is to match it with the standard width of a classical guitar = 53mm
I'm sold! Thanks for the great review. I was looking for a guitar to keep in my office.
Nice demo , bro . Thanks .
Now I’m not sure whether to get the steel or nylon strings.
Sounds great, but I there was no link to this guitar in the description, and I searched and searched the site and couldn’t find it.

It’s because of the string angle as it passes over the nut and to the tuner. Gibsons tend to have this problem too.
