On Tuesday evening, the French Senate passed an immigration bill that would significantly restrict asylum and deportation policy in France. But despite the passing, it is already proving to be a controversial topic, both because of its content and because Macron may once again be forced to use Article 49.3 to force the bill through the National Assembly. But can this immigration bill once again send the protesters to the streets, or can Macron with his deep unpopularity see it through?

As a foreigner I don't see anything wrong with this bill. If this is what French people and it's government want. Then we should respect there wishes. Their country. Their laws. And we as foreigners should respect the country, their law, their culture and language

It's just interesting to me how the Global North (Europe, USA) is souring on immigration just when the climate crisis is worsening. Unfortunately, a lot of people from the Global South will be displaced due to the climate emergency. And if immigration keeps getting stricter, where will all those people go? Because let's not forget that the climate crisis is largely the fault of the developed countries/ Global North. It's just something interesting I've noticed. It's the poor versus the rich again. Same as it's always been.

But interesting people are only interested in Western Europe… so not it’s not exactly the way you claim.

There are a lot of options and things that should happen but don't happen. It's funny how Europeans cry about immigrants while a lot of the reasons the people from poor countries are trying to flee (poverty, political instability, climate change) are directly or indirectly caused by all the "developed" countries.
Blows my mind that the original one had a hard time to pass at all. It was extremely reasonable. Europe needs to get their shit together on immigration.

There's only really 2 appeals for asylum plus different types of proceedings for specific cases (urgent application, appealing administrative retention, etc). Darmanin blatantly disinforms the public to push the idea that asylum seekers are absurdly overprotected by law, which is not the case.

I find it unlikely that this will result in riots comparable to those of the pension reforms. Seems like most Frenchmen are in favor of the bill, and only their political parties oppose it, unlike the pension reforms. The will of the people will prevail.
Sadly it may well do but that'll just increase support for the bill and in a way kind of proves their point, but that's an argument for another day.

its not about cutting migration at this point, its about rolling it back and deporting en masse. Its absurd, for example I'm a foreigner serving France in their military, it will take me many years to get a french passport this way (at least 5 just for permanent residence card). They offer more to people who come here illegally and less who actually serve their country.

With few exceptions Europe is speedily moving towards right-wing domination. Due mainly to immigration, all left-wing European parties have to do is be really tough on immigration and indigenous rights and they will win more. But they won't, a few exceptions are Denmarks Social Democrats and Irelands Sinn Fein which are left-wing parties but tough on immigration and pro-indigenous.

Now let’s hope Keir Starmer is tough on immigration but he probably won’t be. In my opinion The UK should join the EFTA so there in the European sphere but can keep there freedoms including on immigration, although polling on the next EU elections show a right wing wave there so perhaps Europe will widen up in general.

The vast majority of people who migrate to the UK for example are legal skilled immigrants, their dependents, & students which the country badly needs especially after Brexit. It's important to understand that this law is not the brainchild of Macron, but really that of Darmanin, who is significantly more of a hardliner than Macron is. Back when President Hollande was in power, Macron rose to significance as his minister of the economy by introducing a bill, the "Macron law", which also needed the controversial use of article 49.3 to pass parliament. And by doing do, Macron became a thorn in Hollande's side, while Hollande himself was very unpopular. It seems the same thing is happening again, but with Darmanin taking Macron's place.
Now of course it is too early to tell whether the Darmanin law will necessitate the use of article 49.3, and more importantly, whether Darmanin's presidential bid will be successful. He faces two uphill battles: Firstly, former Prime Minister Edouard Philippe is a favourite in the polls to succeed Macron. And secondly, Marine Le Pen is still riding very high.
One thing is certain, this immigration bill is definitely a defining moment that will determine the political carreer of several high profile politicians.
Darmanin will never be macron 2.0 because he's less popular than other Renaissance party members and would lose the elections for sure

Even more important to understand is that all laws considering immigration are just tricks and games and they don't change anything. Majority of young people in France are of foreign background and France as we know it will sease to exist when older generations die off and there is nothing to stop that.

It's not the first time that laws or stuff like this pass or try to pass, never change anything. Most immigrants, even the one with an OQTF ( an obligation to leave the territory ) aren't expulse and stay here, with nobody doing anything.
The large majority of french population is against immigration, but we have a small and very influent minority who do everything they can to keep the immigration and the migrants in, and it works.
Despite the criminality and all the issue, migrants have a huge protection in France by the far left and center politicians and french, so nothing will change.
And it's kind of the same for other european countries, we all have the same issue, the only country who truly managed to do something, or at least start, is Denmark.

It's really sad, I live in the Netherlands and it's the same here. Migrants coming through 9 safe countries before finally landing here to take welfare, houses and free education. The numbers are insane, 220k migrants per year, whereas 70k are from middle-east alone and staying. The Dutch people have no houses to live in (they are put back further on the social housing list by migrants). Migrants have extra privileges, and if you say anything about it you are called a racist, xenophobe, islamophobic, etc. It's a never ending story, when will it stop? We are willingly open to invite migrants, but not this much. It's wayy too much, while we have a housing crisis, supermarket crisis, health-care crisis. We are doing very bad atm, and yet, we take in more immigrants. And it's also a safety concern, because the immigrants have very non-compatible cultures - which lead to crime and segregation.

I'm glad someone said it... It's amazing how the media buys wholesale the idea that when wages increase 100% of that increase becomes inflation, rather than the reality of it that it increases the value of the labor in relation to non service goods, ie the purchasing power of the labor. It is sensible to assume that any significant increase in wages in a stagnant economy does hurt growth prospects though.

I have been to France multiple times in the last few years, you can barely see a French looking person on the streets of Marseille , but you can easily spot teenager immigrants pick pocketing and running away.
That's unfortunate but Marseille isn't the best example. Marseille has been a gateway to and from the Mediterranean since the Greeks founded it, in Antiquity and in the last century when many Neapolitans and other southern Italians immigrated there in large numbers, then eventually people from North Africa and sub-Saharan Africa since the late 60s or early 70s onwards. But ya, Marseille is notorious for its crime but it's had that reputation for a long time. But what you say reminds me of Los Angeles and counties around Los Angeles. There are entire sections of the city and cities of Greater Los Angeles where the demographics have changed so much that you would think you're in Mexico or central America.
The main difference, is that Mexicans and Latin Americans aren't extremists or criminals
I'm European descent, but speak fluent spanish and get along great with 100,000s of latin americans plus I travel all over spanish-speaking countries......... we all get along

If it was only Paris... In the two last months i went once to Marseille and once to Nice (i usually avoid big cities because it depresses me). Twice i was on the verge of a fight. Once with an arab cutting my way with his scooter in Marseille and defying me with his look, and yesterday with a black in his 20s totally high and driving a last model BMW who was taking a street in the wrong way.

its a nightmare, Paris is full of homeless sleeping in the roads, pissing and shitting everywhere. Every small town you go to, doesn't feel like France. I've been robbed 3 times walking home, my home has been broken into 2 times in the last 2 years and I live in the 3eme in the centre in a safe district. It's not sustainable. We need stricter rules.

It is also important - many of people here in the US understand this wrong - that this has nothing to do with the free movement for citizens of EU and Schengen and EEA countries. A German can still move to France to work and live without any problem.

Canada is pretty easy to immigrate to. You just need an education and some work experience, which doesn't even need to be impressive. It's really easy to international students to stay there too. There's an entire business of fraudulent diploma mills. Canada is currently taking 500k immigrants a year. The downside is that housing and cost of living here are ridiculous.
The immigration system in the US is a complete mess. People who are born from certain countries can get their green card through a diversity lottery, and they can pull their whole extended family there. Meanwhile, the H1B visa system is an arbitrary mess. All the applicants, regardless of their qualifications, have to go through the same lottery that only selects 65,000 people per year. People wait several years to get a visa. After that, skilled tech workers from India can spend 20 years waiting for a green card, while they are tied to a single employer/sponsor who can exploit them however they want to.
The US also has the worst illegal immigration problem out of all the countries. (Population of 16-29 million!) 2 million people crossed the southern border last year, which completely burden the asylum system. Most of them just vanish inside the country and never show up to their court dates, since they aren't legitimate refugees. But they fulfill HUGE cheap labor demands, so it's hard to do anything about them without major repercussions to the economy.

Legal migration from the third world is the problem. I'm Irish and was able to rent a flat in temple bar in 2010 without much difficulty. Now it's so bad I'm paying mortgage rates for a bedroom outside the city. I used to work with a guy from Pakistan and was able to support a wife and child on a single retail job. This is not possible without significant state supports. All which come from my pocket.

The problem is that it will concern all the already well intergrated migrants and foreign students as "collateral damage".
French bureaucracy is a complete and utter nightmare, and with the limitations that are suggested (no more than 3 renewals for the residence permit, 10 years of residency for citizenship, local prefectures' responsibilities, etc) it will take years just to have a more or less stable situation in France. It will make France unattractive for qualified workers, even now it's not super competitive as the wages are much lower than in Germany for example.
There is a need to reform the bureaucratic system and to have an integration policy for those who are already there.
Just come in as a refugee, everything will be fixed.
