How to Fix Damaged Interior Window Sill without Replacing | Deep Scratched Wood Repair
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 вер 2024
- In this video, I fix a deeply scratched interior window sill. My dog has been jumping on this window sill for years now and has dug his nails/ paws into the wood. I was thinking of replacing the entire piece of wood but decided to use one of my favorite products instead... Bondo wood filler! I have used this for a couple of other projects and it has worked out great. If you have done a project similar to this, let me know in the comments how it went or how you did it differently. Thanks for watching! 😃
This an excellent detailed video!!!👍🏾
Tip: before painting, prime it with either, Zinsser Peel Stop or Sherwin Williams Peel Bond.
It will have a silky finish!!
I had a cat who loved to sit on one of my sills all day. He would scratch it up, but also vomit on it. I had to constantly scrub it and repaint it. I added a sacrificial sill on top that was wider to save the original sill from more damage.
Yes! Great idea!
GREAT idea👍 If you don't mind, I'm stealing your idea. I greatly appreciate it!!! Thank you so much☺️
@@butterfliesandcamo5975 You are welcome.
Plot twist: There is over 13 months of footage of Matt just trying to get out of the house
😂
Knowing that you now have a new home, fixing things in your old home is not required. But you Matt are awesome!!! Your pride and your love for your old home will not allow you to leave anything unfinished or needing a lil fix up. Trust me, the new owner's will be so Thankful☺️
When I was young my family a dog that constantly held his most vigil protective surveillance of our home at a specific front room window. My grandfather located some salvaged marble window sills and replaced the wood windowsill with white marble. Our family's most loyal canine guard was no longer the destorer of our front room windowsills
Sadly, over 2k people needed to view this video, just like me. We have 4 living room windows overlooking the walkway and porch, right next to our mailbox. Our mailman still delivers to our front door. Fido is NOT a fan. I’ve added baby gates to our foyer so he can’t access the living room. But, now it’s time to fix the window sills.
I’m thankful for this video and your product list.
That's almost 100% what I did just a few weeks ago! We bought a house and I did not like the old caulking and dirty window sills. So I fixed it :)
This is perfect :) Thank you! My great pyrenees likes to rub her teeth/chops on our dining room window sills so she has scratched them up decently. This is exactly the repair tutorial I was looking for.
I clicked so fast on this title! I have similar problem, and never thought there might be a way to fix without replacing all of thw woodwork
Awesome! Hope it helps!!
@@TheFixerHomeRepairits like our houses were lived in by the same previous owners! Your vids have been a huge help
I've used Johnstone's stain blocker as a primer coat, after sanding, on all out unpainted internal window sills. It covers any water damage and is a great primer for the top coats. Wood filler filled any dents and scoring before & after primer. Caulked it too, for a neat finish.
Came out great! Didn't know Bondo made a wood filler. You remind me of myself doing work in my house lol. I watch a ton of videos and try to DIY everything.
Thnx for the new video...gave me a new idea for repairing old chipped paint on wood trm around my Great Room windows! I see that the Bondo Wood Filler is a bit different than the old one (which is/was the same as car body filler Bondo in standard grey color) with a color closer to that of most interior woods. Words of Caution for you and your viewer-subscribers about using dark grey sanding sponges...if you want to avoid the super headache i just overcame because of the dark grey 120 grit 3 M sanding sponge. Tips: (1) know that the proprietary 3M dye will bleed from the sponge if the sponge is the least bit damp, (2) and the dark grey color can transfer and spread onto and into latex-based painted surfaces and even drywall. (3) It is a Royal B to conceal this stain that CANNOT be removed. My Fix-ordeal: 2 layers of latex-based primer, 2 coats of Kilz Original oil-based primer and finally 2 coats of Zinsser BIN shellac-based primer, 2 more topcoats of S-W Multi-Purpose white latex-based primer and 3 (THREE) topcoats of top-notch latex-based S-W off-white interior ceiling and wall paint...and FINALLY 3 M's grey primer stain is hidden! Please keep up the good work-videos!
As always I learned something. Thanks
Awesome to hear! Thanks for watching!
I always enjoy all your videos. Lots of good stuff to learn. I can’t wait to you. Start working in your new house. Keep up the good work. Thank you.
The Fixer 👍
For me it was one of our cats that did this stuff looking out at the windows. haha The finished result looks great.
I also had cats at one point, they can definitely do even more damage than dogs! Good thing we love our pets. 😂
So you had a Cat-astrophe?
@@davetrayford 🙂
Heyooooo 😂
Nice video! I've used that same product on some furniture builds. I've seen a working time for it closer to only 3 minutes, but I think it is really dependent on air temperature. Makes you really hurry :) I usually am using it in the summer, so just beware.
Wow that's crazy, learned so much man i appreciate the video !!!
Good timing, I'm doing some similar repairs. To avoid getting extra bondo or putty on areas that don't need it, I use blue painter's tape, ie on the window sill or near the edges
And thank you for wearing a mask, you made this Registered Nurse happy 😊
We used to do this to patch spots in the subfloor where animals went all the way through the flooring and started digging into the sub.
So Glad that you went the Sand and Paint route on this one. 😂😂😂 I thought you were gonna REMOVE the entire sill and make it a bigger task than necessary. 😢 This was the route I would have taken had I needed to fix something for a client, as I'm a City Dweller... we're not allowed to fix our own issues...just call maintenance and wait for them to NEVER do it! 😅😅😅. JK...kinda...😂😂😂
Take Care. Nice work as always. Learning a lot, better than school was. 🙋🏾♀️😇🤗👷🏽♀️ #ConstructionLife #FemNOTFragile
I have this exact issue to fix at my place!! Thank you for the video!
Hope it helps! Thanks for watching!
Came out awesome!
Is this the new house?
Another wonderful and hepful video from, Bondo Boy. 🤣 I had a german shepherd and rottweiler that did the same thing as Cody. I painted over it, but now that I know how well Bondo works, I will be redoing those sills. You do realize that whoever buys your home can use these videos as a "Owner's Manual" for everything in that house? Should be a bonus for sale. Thanks for sharing. Hope all is going well in the new house. 👍🏼👍🏼
I''ve used Elmers Damaged wood repair. Two part. It's like silly putty. It worked out very well but cannot find that stuff anywhere. I liked it because it wasn't as messy. Bondo is def a good substitute.
Thanks for the repair video. Ive also blocked the bottom window with poster board to keep my dog from being reactive
I've replace my windows sills with continuous strips of granite with bullnose edge. Done, will outlived me!
We fixed ours with joint compound and paint. It’s what I had on hand. Pupper tore it up again
My dog has done the same kind of damage on the window sill of a much larger window. I have been trying to figure out the best way to address the problem when we took in another rescue. One of the first skills she learned from her new brother was how to guard the house by stranding watch at the picture window. This video is very timely for me. I’m just gonna have to figure out how to keep it from happening again.
Those pesky mailmen are ASKING FOR IT! 🤣🐶
yeah...the USPS mailwomen are okay!
I swear your channel has everything I need😂

"Kodaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh!"
Great job!
Awesome work.
I never thought 🤔 of Bondo. I had this issue and I had a countertop man make me a topper from Corian.
My problem has always been the water damage to the window sill over the kitchen sink. It's stained and lacquered, not painted, so it's mainly a matter of sanding and grabbing the can of Minwax.
That looks great, Matt. 👍🤩
It looks really good. I love that you know all the tips & tricks for fixing things. It's nice you're doing all these touch ups for the new owners, assuming you sold your home for the new one - or are you keeping it as a rental unit? TY
I did not know about Bondo for wood! thanks
😁👍 thank YOU for watching!
Looks good 😊
looks great Matt I knew you were going to use either bondo or wood putty on that 😂 my father in law was a union master carpenter by trade & also a mechanic (he worked at a garage growing up and in the army too) so I learned a few tricks of the trade from him🤣
great video & very informative as always 🙂
Just curious, does wood Bondo sand easier then metal Bondo, nice job
Love your sander. Pretty cool. ❤😮
Beautiful windowsill 🎉
You can use a sureform to shape it also
Good tips on this fix. I've used the auto version of bondo in the past but I will try this Wood version . I'm curious how will it accepts stain . Thanks for the video .
Honestly I have never ran into a situation where I had to stain it so I am not sure... I have no idea why they changed the hardener color but I feel like it would stain better when it was red.
Let me know if you ever try it!!
I was really hoping youd say flex seal lol. I tell you what this man can build a house outta levels, flex seal, and bondo. hehe.
Looks great. How hard does it set up. I did a similar repair on some vertical moulding that the dogs clawed up. I used some wood putty, but the dogs clawed right thru it again in a few weeks
Since you're tidying up before you leave the house, and I'm not sure if you already did this, would you be able to show the before and after's on all your renovations in one complete compilation. And I would still be interested in knowing the difference in value your renovations procured verse if you did no renovations at all. I'm not asking for personal and private info, just a general idea what increase in value your renovations provided you upon the sale. Thanks and looking forward to your future projects on your new house. Best of luck. Sincerely.
Yes! This idea is on the list. Not sure when I will make the video but it is on there!
Have you used Big Stretch caulking yet? Tools easier than the Alex I think you used.
Question - have you stained Bondo before and if so, how did it look?
I needed this so bad. Mine is a cat lol
You're getting more confident. And you sh5, you're great at what you 3. Never shave the beard.
It's your trademark. ❤
Show installation of upvc windows.
Looks great…I thought about a piece of plexiglass to prevent my cats from scratching the sill
Great idea!
How do you plan to protect it?
I moved out and took the dog with me. 🤣
What color is the wall?
Dog snot!! On windows!
Hi, tell me, what kind of grinder do you have Rayobi? What is the name of the grinding machine model?
Did you really just mix that bondo without some sort of drip cloth underneath? Dangerous, like James Bondo! lol. 😝
Do you have to let the caulking dry before painting?
Yes you should. I have made the mistake of painting too quickly and you can end up rewetting the caulking enough with the paint that it ruins it. Hope this helps.
Matt,Are u still living in the same city?
Mr. Fixer your job would have been easier with a oscillating tool and a scraper blade. Great work though!
Sorry, messed up with the keyboard.
The words I misspelled are should and do.❤
the problem is that your dog will mess up the window sill again. Can you do more durable wood and stain or use metal trim on the top of the window sill? So you dont have to paint it again.
I could do that but I moved out and brought the dog with me so problem solved. 😀😂
👍
❤
I had to ask my mailman not to tap the window when he came to deliver our mail because my 90 pound German Shepherd mix was tearing up the wall trying to kill him. My dog was trying to smell some The mailman through glass, that frustrates dogs.
I get what you're doing here but try getting your dogs toenails trimmed then simply bond a piece of carpet to the sill. It can always be done away with if necessary.
Hard to teach and old dog new tricks. But easy to get rid of a nuisance.
Yeah if you are lazy and heartless.
Dik head
OMG- fill mccracken. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I'm so immature
first
The dog will just ruin it again
Not if I move out of the house and take him with me. 😀👍
