  • Yes Crew! Big up and welcome back to another little video.
So, I picked up this Roland MV30 Studio M on the Facebook Market place and found it shared the same sound engine and the Roland U20 & U220 which was used by 'Prodigy' in the early days.
It has a lovely tone and lots of aliasing magic when sounds are played at a low pitch and also it adds the digital filter as introduced on Roland's S770 sampler and D70 synth. It's pretty special.
This is my first little exploration and I plan to do a few more volumes as I use the machine more.
Here's a link to the sample pack: 12bitjotsamplepacks.bandcamp....
Also if you didn't already know I'm celebrating the release of 2 records today which came out on PPJ Recordings. These records contain 4 tracks of mine all made on Amiga & Hardware. Proper Jungle business folks. Loads of fun!! Head over to the PPJ store and check them out.

It has the sounds of the U-220 with much needed filters added. Too bad Roland never put out a U-330 with the sound engine of the MV-30.

Nice to see some love for the MV-30 😀 The filter section on top of the U-series engine makes it so much more useful for sound design. Do you happen to have the cassette tape which was included with the device? I've been curious to hear the original demo songs which use this layer to showcase the tape sync feature.

Unfortunately the unit came with any cassettes. The gotek I picked up came with a folder containing a number of demos so it’s possible these are on there. The filter is fantastic 👌

@@12BITJuNGLEOuTTHeRe Ahhh yeah it seems like the tapes got lost for many of these as they change hands. It was for demonstrating sync to external, pre-recorded audio w/ the tape sync signal, so probably not included with the gotek, unless the files they shared include audio recordings? Somebody would have had to record it from the tape.

I’d love to hear the demo songs (and any other songs created with an MV-30, no matter how bad!). I have an MV-30 and first played around with one when they came out in 1991. Actually more akin to the D-70 in some ways and you could use sounds on both. They always had a cool sound that was unique to early 90s Roland. I also have the two (and only) ROM cards that were released for the MV-30. Another cool thing is you could use that highly sought after Roland ROM card with those 808/909 sounds.
Trying to update to the last and better functioning 1.03 OS via the floppy was problematic so I see you can get that OS as an eprom chip now - that’s cool.
In any case, the MV-30 is really a lost classic.

@@diamondfieldmusic Yah the hardware has much in common with D70, it’s quite a capable device :) How do you mean update the OS? It’s only able to boot from floppy disk afaik. I haven’t found anything about being able to boot from an eprom online, where did you see this?

Yeah totally!! I really want to do it. Could be the heart of a midi set up for sure. Just need to find the time to study the sequencer. 👍

Wonder if the Waverex card would work in there? should do as the u220 reads the same cards. Allows you to add your own samples to the card, very limited file size but interesting when they are pitch down etc 👍

Hi I left a comment here but it disappeared. I bought the waverex card and it works with the MV30 - with some caveats, such as it seems to affect the internal sounds and distort them in a very strange way.
Still tying to figure out a workaround - it seems to be sporadic.
What I can say though is as a sample player it sounds excellent. Hard to describe crunchy low fi but also silky smooth. Will do a video at some point

@@felixvortex9 Doesn't a lot of old, early 90s gear use 8-bit PCMs that are weirdly upsampled in the synth to 16-bit?, similar to the Alesis HR-16 drum machine. I vaguely recall a friend hacking some PCM-based synth in order to use his own custom sounds, and all the samples he used were 48,000Hz, 8bit, Signed,
Mono, PCM or they didn't work. Don't know much about the MV30 though, maybe I'm talking bollocks, lol.
