I engineer at a studio for a living and SOOO many rappers read off their phone.... Sometimes it will kill their delivery, but its actually impressive when they can deliver it on point while reading. That can sometimes be harder than rapping something you've memorized cuz you already know how it should sound.
The way I look at freestyling is that when you have been rapping for a long time. You have prob used and have made parts of verses and shit out of damn near your whole vocabulary. Don't get me wrong though. There are still rappers that are just straigh up good at straight up legit off shit too.
