These lines don't exist in our high detail infrared scans. In fact the picture on my profile is a high resolution 3D model I made from the highest resolution of these scans. That picture shows the area where the most obvious very large river would have been on Mars. As you can see the indentation in the terrain clearly shows water flow from it's smooth lines. Interestingly Mars is a little lopsided, so if there where oceans on Mars it would have covered about half the planet. The render I made shows what a terraformed Mars would look like. The original 3D model has an accurate volumetric atmosphere, and uses tessellation to create really high resolution, to the point where you can go into the atmosphere and the surface still looks pretty good. There are some artifacts caused by the scanning that look like lines when you go really close up, but nothing like what is shown in the video.

Then came the night the first missile approached Earth. It was thought to be an ordinary falling star, but the next day there was a huge crater in the middle of the Common, and Ogilvy came to examine what lay there. A cylinder, thirty yards across, glowing hot, and with faint sounds of movement coming from within. Suddenly the top began moving, rotating, unscrewing, and Ogilvy feared there was a man inside trying to escape. He rushed to the cylinder but the intense heat stopped him before he could burn himself on the metal...

The couple points alluded to in this documentary was that with H.G.Well's classic; given his socialist leanings, the martians were a strong criticism of European colonization. Especially of Africa which at that time had reached a fevered pitch. The Martian Chronicles; at least in the early stories, often played as the settling of the west in the USA relocated to the Red Planet. One story which didn't really translate well for the twenty first century: Way in the Middle of The Air(1950), was axed from some recent reprints of the chronicles. In it, there is a mass exodus of African Americans who commission a fleet of spaceships to help them escape the prejudice here to the promised land of Mars. The final rebuke of a small town bigot was a brilliant response to the evil done to them for too long. Please keep this series going, I love it.

Ilian Ceroni I took a year of Latin and had the same question. It’s only in English where we distinguish “Channels” from “canals” (the former being natural and the latter being artificial). Italian, from my understanding, doesn’t make a distinction because it really doesn’t matter.

    • @johnwang9914

Ironically, suspected radio transmissions including the static seen on early televisions on channels where there was no transmission was also suspected as evidence of Martians. Just search on Tesla and Martians...

    • @ilianceroni

James A. Franklin well, other tongues may have this distinction, but yes, Italian doesn’t have two words. But I guess every language has its weird specific thing😂
Today it may be useless, but it probably was a useful information once: water streams were more dangerous and artificial ones were probably more safe🤔

Again, our monster stories tell us a lot about ourselfs and our society. I find it interesting how aliens sometimes are friends and sometimes enemies, sometimes humanoid and sometimes something else. Aliens are a good metaphor for meeting unknown people. Are they dangerous or friendly? Are you afraid or do you accept them? It appeals to our basic instincts, fear and curiosity, also willingness to help others. It is no coincidence that Americans who are against immigration are more likely to call immigrants "aliens", it is a linguistical tool to express differences and the risks that come with them.
If ever intelligent, humanoid aliens visit earth and it seems like they come in peace, I can guarantee that humanity will be split in pro and against alien groups. The pro groups might think they are partners and that we can learn from each other, the contra groups might think they are in fact dangerous and maybe have some evil plan. Knowing humanity, we will probably end up fighting each other over wether or not we accept aliens.
I have this idea for a science fiction novel where this scenario happens. Aliens come to earth, we humans aren't quite sure what to make out of that and start dividing ourself. The conflict of interests escalates and we start a war among ourselfes while the aliens are watching. End of the story, humanity is weak now and almost destroys itself. It turns out that this was the aliens plan: Come in peace, wait for humans to weaken themselfes and now they are in power. Alternatively, it could end openly and the story doesn't tell if the aliens ever had any bad intentions.

5:38 Did you just compare the Martian Manhunter to an alien menace?
I know you can't research every character you probably find reference to, but the Martian Manhunter is probably the most heroic and selfless fictional martian anywhere. Plus he isn't really obscure--he's been a popular, front and center feature in DC comics for the last 60 years.

    • @suburbanlegend1997
      @suburbanlegend1997 3 роки тому +5

I noticed that too, but I don't think they meant any disrespect to our boy haha
I think what they were referring to was how J'onn and DC martians tend to have some reptilian features when they're not shape-shifting to their human apologetic. Although I believe that's actually a more recent change to his design, where his original look had him in his humanoid form all the time, so I guess it doesn't quite fit the video's narrative?

I remember the ending of the episode of Cosmos with Carl Segan that was about Mars. He concluded that with potential explorations of the planet and possible colonization that the "Martians will be us." The end of the Martian Chronicles also ends the same way with the two families meeting together on the planet and a version of this story was used in the TV mini-series where the kids want to see the Martians and the father points to their reflections in the water of the canal saying they're the Martians.

What's interesting about the depiction of Mars and her people in modern sci-fi is that while it's colonized by humans, they are often at odds with humans from Earth, such as in The Expanse where Mars and Earth are the two rival super powers of the Solar System, or in Babylon 5, where Mars' people are oppressed and killed by a dictatorial regime on Earth.
That trope of Martian humans being distinct from Earthern humans and sometimes being at odds with them can even be seen in works like Warhammer 40K, where the Martian Adeptus Mechanicus' work on Mars is sometimes seen as borderline-heradical by the rest of the Imperium.
So in modern Sci-Fi the classical, alien Martians who sometimes were hostile, but also more advanced or utopian has become integrated with the more modern concepts of human colonization of Mars with these traits being applied to people who now don't look alien, but behave that way, which I find interesting.
Further, the Martians of the DC universe are often depicted in the classical way, as aliens who are far more advanced than us and live in peaceful utopia, which is interesting in so far as it is nowadays an anachronistic outlier in its depiction of Martians due to DC Comics' age.

There's an underrated book by C.S. Lewis, "Out of the Silent Planet," that takes place on Mars, and was actually a deconstruction of the hostile Martian invader mania of the time. Written in the 1930s, it actually seems like a throwback to pre-Wells depictions of Martians, where the locals live in a more moral society, although not necessarily a more technologically advanced one. Indeed, the main antagonists of the book are not the Martians, but humans. Indeed, influenced by the colonialism of the time, Lewis opined that if there are Martians, they have more to fear from humans than we do from them.
7:28 And wait a minute, are those Graboids? Maybe they really did come from outer space...

@Allen Clark Precisely why it shouldn't have been left out. The video basically begins and ends with debunkings, from the Martian "canali" to Orson Wells' Martian invasion hysteria. So far our evidence of life on the Red Planet is a whole series of illusions and that we should guard against falling for them.

The theory about CANALS on mars is very interesting, esp because there is a very similar theory or observation for an advanced ancient human (or alien) species on EARTH as well. Researchers have noticed a similar trend with many of the most powerful, industrious, and successful cities from various civilizations around the world... which is having an intricate system of canals or aqueducts. Places like greek/rome, venice, as well as angor wat in SE asia, mohenjo daro in india, tenochitlan of the Aztecs/mayans in mexico, and even in Washington DC. They all have a very advanced canal system built to transport water and boats as well as irrigate crops.
Another interesting similarity is that they were all mostly built on swampy/marshy land... where earth and water would meet.... like DC or tenochitlan used to be a swamp until these cities were built, and became swampy after the city was abandoned (if it didn't dry up like in angor wat). T
he canal system in DC is called the C&O canal and actually goes a very long way from the Chesapeake bay in Maryland up the Potomac river all the way to Ohio valley.... and ohio is another significant area where large groups of native americans lived and made large pyramid like "temple mounds", some of which still exist today like the serpent mound. The engineering for these canals seems pretty technical and clever, having to find a way to transport boats with many locks/gates to raise and lower the water level.
I wonder what other unknown history exists about these canals, and if there is any link or greater meaning between the similarities of the large canal/aqueduct systems on earth and what we see on mars. These canals were like basic terraforming, shaping the land to better suit the industrious city... and I wonder if the preference for swampy/marshy land has any greater significance to it such as Mars being swampy at one point (or even Venus actually, I could see that being a watery planet before its atmosphere changed). Hopefully we will learn more in the future.

I saw the Tom Cruise War of the Worlds movie as a kid, backtracked to the book, and it's been a favorite of mine ever since. It's a great, if very thinly-veiled, commentary on British imperialism. Not nearly as topical as The Time Machine nowadays, but I find War of the Worlds more entertaining.

It was also Wells's concern over society's complacency in the face of any kind of disruption of their "little, carefully planned lives"/lives he saw as being lived by rote. By habit and class rules etc.
