In regards to the conversation (at 44 min) on designer babies and whether natural selection still acts on the human population, I just wanted to clarify that there are actually a few different kinds of natural selection! What the boiks are most likely thinking about is positive selection, in which some cool new trait is introduced into the gene pool and selected for. It’s true, this happens very rarely (which is why it takes millions of years for hominids to evolve), and that there are few realistic traits nowadays that could dramatically change quality of life so as to become ubiquitously held. On the other hand, it’s important to remember the other type of selection, which is called negative or purifying selection. This is what keeps us from basically unraveling into genetic disasters. A huge amount of stuff can and does go wrong (1 in 10,000 base pairs in your DNA is copied wrong when making sperm/eggs/new cells, and repair mechanisms don’t catch everything), so when this stuff goes wrong in a big way, the mistakes are caught early and the zygote/fetus doesn’t survive. Spontaneous abortions (non-induced) are something I look at in my cancer genetics clinic, because they can give us a good idea about how likely certain individuals’ genes are to fuck up. TL;DR: negative selection is always there (for us at least), like gravity, to keep us from spinning off into the infinite possibilities of genetic change. It keeps us coherent as a species and most importantly allows reproduction between all individuals, not just the ones which are most similar.

On the sleep and school debate, I'm a senior in high school (secondary school) and my school is currently debating whether or not to push back start times an hour. The BIGGEST argument against it is that we won't have time for sports. While I agree sports are important, it boggles my mind that they can't give up some practice time to save their future mental health. I know hundreds of students who regularly get 3 hours of sleep and their body has adapted to that. And its horrendous. Very important topic. Get your sleep!!
Loved this guys, so good to see it back especially as a long time fan. A bit of constructive criticism: you seemed a little nervous which is totally understandable, it's a medium you've not done in a long time AND you jumped in the deep end doing it live. Maybe don't do the first few live just so you can find the right headspace and flow for it? I'm certain you'd have all been less nervous if it wasn't live and thus adding pressure. Either way I really enjoyed it, and I think that doing them live is a great idea once you've found your flow. Anyway hope this wasn't condescending or anything, sending much love and soon some Patreon money too so how about that.
I'm pleasantly surprised by the intelligent and philosophical discussions here, from the same guys who brought you talks about munting, jenkem, and penile sashimi in the previous Hat Chats.
Just so you guys know. ASMR is about how sounds trigger certain neural connections in the brain which causes your nerves to respond, it's usually the nerves in your scalps and on the back of your head or neck but it can be anywhere on your body. Not everyone can feel it, just like not everyone can hear certain pitches of sound and some people can see more shades of colour than others. Although I'm willing to gamble that if you actually sat down and gave it a try after putting aside your natural creeped out feeling or feeling of being silly you would probably feel it. This isn't some hoodoo new age witchcraft bullshit, this isn't crystals and burning sage, it's the result of a scientific study in the bodies response to certain auditory triggers.
For what it’s worth, lottery winners do get instant access to financial advisers. There are firms out there that deal specifically with lottery winners, so it is down to the winners as to whether they want their advice or not. Usually, as a charge is involved, they want to hold on to all of their money, even if it’d be way better for them in the long run.
The ideal is a world where equality of opportunity exists for everyone rather than constant financial equality. This means ensuring that everybody has enough that they can focus on improving their lives rather than simply surviving. Social welfare and training/educational programmes can be good for this. Social democracy seems like the sort of balance between free market capitalism and socialism that Smiffy was talking about.
This is what people are actually looking for in the US policy wise, everyone knows that no actual pure forms of government have ever existed, or will ever exist, thus it is a waste of time to even ponder about them. Even if you start with a pure form, when you introduce the human element, it will always sway off course, it isn't possible for it not to.
Some comments on natural selection on humans from a molecular biologist: Natural selection is simply the term for unequal distributing of alleles (versions of a gene) from one generation to the next. This means that humans today are very much still subject to natural selection due to a number of factors, the largest probably being not every person having the same number of children and, although heavily reduced by medicine, some people still dying before having any children. This creates a discrepancy between social and biological success as many highly, socially successful people don't have children, while most socially unsuccessful people have many children. This leads some geneticists to fear that humanity is moving evolutionarily in a "wrong" direction, according to the cultural paradigm. On gene editing on humans, this would reduce natural selection as we would artificially change and stabilise the gene pool. This introduces a clash between culture and biology as genetic differences, what we sometimes call diseases, are negative as most cultures praise conformity, and yet they are necessary to drive evolution. Gene editing is basically an entry to eugenics as there is no biological way to say that some allele is better than the other as long as the bearer survives to have children. In the end, we would just aim to conform all humanity to an arbitrarily chosen "perfect", which was also the basis for the Holocaust. Spooky.
I work in a bar it's not classed as a 'night shift' yet I will regularly work from 3pm to 5/6am, but as we are a restaurant in the day I could be in work at 11am. Its exhausting and it'd be much appreciated if I had an incentive more than 5.70 an hour after say 12am
The sleep talk was really interesting especially the night shift talk. I used to work a night shift in a hotel, I got paid £1 more than daytime staff. I could certainly feel my life span fucking shrinking in that job. Luckily I'm no longer in that job but it was really interesting to hear.

I think the more equality between sexes becomes widespread, the more the differences between the sexes will be shown instead of society trying to fake that we aren't different
As an American, I feel like it would be best for me to chime in on the topic of sex ed. I'm fortunate enough to live in a more liberal part of the country, but a lot of states (looking at you, Texas) have laws that mandate schools' sex ed curriculum is "birth control bad, sex outside of marriage bad, masturbation bad, recreational sex bad." Now, I'm no expert, but it seems to me like telling horny teenagers that everything involving sex (except sex in marriage for childbirth) is bad would make them have trouble telling the difference in morality between rape (or dubious consent) and consensual sex.
Funny thing, we have Yo Bikes in Southampton and actually they never seem to be damaged - the issue we have is people stealing them and locking them in their back gardens so they always have access to them.

fuck yeah boys, welcome back! love the intriguing topics n weird shit u like to talk about, its always my fav part of your content, and the reason ive been watching for so many years
Edit: Actually listening a little further on and I think I get the lads problem with actually understanding Socialism. It's not about making people equal, it's about making sure people don't need to worry about making money to survive to do the things they really want to do. Okay, I wanna talk about the Socialist segment a bit. I feel Smith is conflating the idea's of Socialism, Communism and Stalinism quite a bit. Specifically in the area of ownership, there is a difference between personal and private property in Socialist theory. In a Capitalist system, those two are essentially the same thing, but under a Socialist system they are different. Because Socialists aren't against the idea of companies, just how they work in a Capitalist system, you can have a business in Socialism. But then that business is not run to generate profit for shareholders. Things are purchased for the value of the material and the labour, this is called the Labour Theory of Values. In Capitalism, a business is run to generate profit for shareholders, which means that the business charges what they can get away with and workers aren't properly compensated for their labour. Communism is a different thing entirely, an ideal communist society is the absence of any form of government, money or class. People do things for each other because it's beneficial for the community or because they want to. What Smith is calling Communism and Socialism is really Stalinism, an idea about Communism where the state is a stand-in for the people.
I'm sorry this is so objectively wrong. Socialism is literally the basis on which we build a society to prepare for communism, as theorized by Lenin. Like, I'm a socialist, because I am a communist. While not every socialist IS a communist, every communist is a socialist.
@@1917girl That's the Marxist ideal, yeah. But you don't necessarily have too, in Marxism Socialism is the intermediate state between Capitalism and classless, stateless, moneyless Communism, but you don't have to go that far. Like, I don't really want to go that far. That's why I call myself a Socialist not a Communist.
Yep, it's totally false, a normal frog will jump out once the temp gets uncomfortable. Also, in general, slippery slope arguments are not inherently true, there is a reason it is a logical fallacy.
as someone who enjoys bdsm & bdsm focused porn, the theatre analogy was a great example. and since i would be on the receiving end of violence in my fantasy theatre situation, i can safely say that i have absolutely no desire to be forced into a real violent situation against my will. consent makes all the difference. adults with informed consent should be allowed to engage in these things in there own spaces. i think like sex, bdsm may become more accepted by the mainstream over time, which will hopefully lead to more education around what is real and whats performance, so we wont need to worry as much that people will see something meant for fantasy and replicate it irl.

Really glad this is back lads, missed you on my podcast app
Hope you guys include Dr. Simon for a guest visit some time. :D
I didn't know Simon was a Dr
yeah he has a phd
This is refreshing friends. Appreciate you guys making this and trying different things
wish you guys luck, hope this takes off as a standalone podcast
This was awesome. I hope you guys can manage to do more!
Ahhh producer Craig. The 4th member of Hat Films. Give that man a raise!
I'm pleasantly surprised by the intelligent and philosophical discussions here, from the same guys who brought you talks about munting, jenkem, and penile sashimi in the previous Hat Chats.
I happen to be a 30 year old white male. My old man body has been waiting ages for the return of the podcast.
I just really enjoyed this. Feels good to be back listening to Hat Chat.
Omg this and the triforce. I'm not sure if I. My life is fulfilled. If only sips did his rambles again
So happy hat chat is back. I could listen to you guys talk for hours. Keep up the interesting conversations boiks!!!
Smiffy is a posterchild for Dunning-Kruger, lol.
I have been waiting so long for this to come back! Can't wait for the next!
I could watch and listen to these all the time 😂 love you lads
you guys should try something like the "all work no play" podcast does (look it up on youtube) where basically you go out and do something, film it, then talk about it on the podcast in between showing clips of it
I'm so happy Hatchat is back lads! Although I did miss the jingles.
Love this, guys! Been a while since i watched a vid from yourselves and im glad i chose this one to come back to. Keep up the good work!
I work nights and I smoke bud as a 2in1 painkiller/sleep aid. Works a treat and surprisingly more cost effective than prescription drugs
Ehh, with copays my prescription pain medications are 100 times cheaper than green is. 21 dollars for an entire months worth of pills @ 4 per day. 21 dollars will get me... maybe 2 days worth of weed?
could you guys do a political ideology test online because i think it would be very interesting to hear your stances on society?
I feel like if you flipped the video you would see it hahaha, t boy lefto, rude boi R centre, s dog right leaning hahahaha !
Maybe wrong but that's my guess
I feel like these boys have had too much money too young and it's somehow made them socialists. usually you grow out of that dumb shit by 30
omg, them introducing themselves just reminded me when i first started listening to hat chat and i couldn't tell them apart :D
Randomly decided I could use a podcast to listen to while playing something and wondered if Hat Chat was still a thing so I searched it yesterday. This had been uploaded a couple of hours prior.
Oh ok so it's like Trials but long. i see
Can't wait for the grand finale that will be episode 3.
But seriously I love the content boiks keep it up!
IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THE RUTURN FOR YEARS🙌🏽thank you for making my day today! Also we need Craig cam!!
Yes! Definitely need Craig Cam.
I dont wna stop watching and go to sleep such an interesting convo but they sayin sleep is so important and its 12 am😂😂
Love this guys, can't wait for next weeks hat chat
Thanks for bringing it back boys!
Looking forward to more of this. Would be cool if you guys eventually brought in guest speakers that may be experts or knowledgeable on certain topics. Keep it up guys!
I really enjoyed this. Thank you for the podcast, please continue with the production of this series.
Interesting topics you touched on lads, looking forwards to the next one!
fuck yeah boys, welcome back! love the intriguing topics n weird shit u like to talk about, its always my fav part of your content, and the reason ive been watching for so many years
Edit: Actually listening a little further on and I think I get the lads problem with actually understanding Socialism.
What Smith is calling Communism and Socialism is really Stalinism, an idea about Communism where the state is a stand-in for the people.
thanks for pointing this out
I'm sorry this is so objectively wrong.
TheClassiestMajinBuu Actually an anti-governmental society is an Anarchist society (not like chaos it’s like a legit societal structure)
@@theelementalscientist6631 Marxist Communism and Anarchism are fairly similar. They're both stateless, classless, moneyless societies
I really enjoyed this podcast boys, nice mix of intellectual conversation with your unique humor! I hope to see more!
This was fantastic. Glad Hat Chat is coming back
The frog boiling thing is almost always taken out of context. The frog that did not leap out of the slowly heated water had it's brain removed...
Yep, it's totally false, a normal frog will jump out once the temp gets uncomfortable. Also, in general, slippery slope arguments are not inherently true, there is a reason it is a logical fallacy.
I loved the podcast and the serious topics keep them coming lads any chat with you guys is entertaining to watch and listen too, great discussions.
as someone who enjoys bdsm & bdsm focused porn, the theatre analogy was a great example. and since i would be on the receiving end of violence in my fantasy theatre situation, i can safely say that i have absolutely no desire to be forced into a real violent situation against my will. consent makes all the difference. adults with informed consent should be allowed to engage in these things in there own spaces. i think like sex, bdsm may become more accepted by the mainstream over time, which will hopefully lead to more education around what is real and whats performance, so we wont need to worry as much that people will see something meant for fantasy and replicate it irl.
great conversation points guys! I like it that you tackle topics that might be considered a bit taboo. Keep up the great work. Also, would love to hear smith talk about black holes, i heard they might be making a considerable breakthrough on Wednesday next week with the telescopes getting a look at a huge one.
Was sad not to catch this live, but did not have wifi at the time. Hope to get the nest one!
Didn't know Trott is a metallica fan, oh wait they sell those shirts at H&M and C&A. Ah never mind.
He is actually a fan
51:07 this is why all speech should be free
Trott we need more of that Creeping Death Shirt. I very much appreciate it.
