1963...what a year to marvel at the world. The Beatles, steam trains and bullet trains, jet airliners and DC3s, ocean going passenger ships, space ships and satellites, milk delivery, and the possibly the most momentous occasion of that century - my birthday. September 12!!
I remember working at Euston in the late 60s and telling a railwayman he was a miserable old so and so because he told spotters at the platform end to clear off. It would be a sackable offence now if a driver invited a wide-eyed youngster into the cab. It was a nicer world then in (just) some ways.
The brick-built bridge over the cutting north of Knebworth station is said to be the largest single span bridge between London and York. It has been designated a Scheduled Monument.
Like those Thompson suburban coaches they had a lavatory. Used to go to Cambridge sheds to cop the Brush 2s in transit. Good to see mixed BR and old LNER mixed coaching stock. Modern railways are boring.
As a schoolboy trainspotter at Knebworth in the 50s and early 60s I'm fascinated by this and wonder who did the filming. I loved hearing the distant beat of an A4 as it emerged from Welwyn north tunnel before it stormed through on The Elizabethan. In those days too The Master Cutler was on the route out of King's Cross, usually headed by an A3.
Near the end of steam it was actively discourage to clean steam locomotives, as the BR 'top brass' wanted to show how much 'cleaner' the new diesels were. People such as Townend at 34A did some phenomenal work and getting at least the Top Link locomotives looking at worst reasonable and at best unbelievably polished condition.
Locomotives are just too valuable to risk damaging these days. Remember, a heavy repair in steam's heyday took not much more than a few days. Today, a locomotive would be out of service for years!

+Tommy Yes, it was a great year, for all those reasons, I guess including your birthday!
And the Ford Cortina mk1.
TommyTwobats and the cold and heavy snow we had the winter of 63
And Martin Luther King’s "I have a Dream", and Mr Kennedy’s "Ich bin ein Berliner!" (among many other great speeches)
...and my birthday on 23rd of August...I concur, what a year!!!

Happy days, when all was well in the world with us kids. 😁

My main takeaway from this footage is the sad condition the steam liveries were allowed to fall into

Wasn't this apart of a longer video?
Yes
You can definitely see how run down the railways were back then even in the 40s/50s.... Some locomotives are so dirty and warn 😐

Why is it the now days when a steam engine pulls away there is so much steam coming out the front you can hardy see it but not in those days?

Think what they could have filmed had they had cameras with todays performance.
