King Birendra was a gentleman and a sagacious ruler. True he had failures, too, but the worst ones were due to family hardliners including Queen Aishwarya and Gynendra. King Birendra’s fault is that he could not restrain them. Maybe. We who read Nepali history without fear and favour (being a foreigner) feel that had King Birendra not died Nepal would have turned into a functional democracy. He was well educated, naturally gentle, and an accommodative personality. He would have provided a strong moral leadership and emboldened Nepal’s international standing in a true sense. Mahendra was successful to some extent. But the respect, if you will it, he commanded was partly due to the Cold War geopolitics. West wanted to have Nepal, a strategically located country, on their side, a launchpad for their anti-China strategy. But the moral leadership that Birendra would have given would have been different: a proper respect with a fewer strings attached. Sadly, Nepali republicanism had failed. Those who fought for it have themselves turned into hounds of feudatory politics and let the country slide into a gradually expanding chaos. Royalist who are crying for the return of monarchy, at least in a constitutional form, project their image of Birendra to the persona of Gynendra, which is a mistake. I don’t believe Gynendra will do any better than he did when he had the opportunity. I know some will pounce at me for saying this but it needs to be said anyway. During the Maoist insurgency, King Birendra did not deploy the army saying if his army attacked Nepalis, whose king he really was. So yeah he wanted unity, differences thrashed out and addressed. But the argument about GS acquiescing, without resorting to violence, to the parliamentary decision to abolish monarchy was not completely his greatness: he did make very calculated move. The royalty’s internal support was at its lowest then. In the 21st century, monarchy must draw its legitimacy from the people it rules over. International community is not favourable to monarchy. In GShah’s case, he had lost a lot of local legitimacy due to the coup he did in absolute lapse of judgment. So with a plummeting local legitimacy, army that was already quite poor in terms of ammunition, and a general international scorn, G Shah had few alternatives. King Birendra was different.
Huge respect to king and everybody. Just one question is hiting me. Why king don't say the true cause of mascarre and who were involved. If he is true leader why don't he tells everything to the people. Either he is hiding something or maybe something is more deeper hidden that impact is still country bearing.. I don't know which is better democracy or monarchy..J aayeni Pani normal people KO life chai same nai xa aajaisamma. Jhan naramro hudai xa . Nepal sadai rahos tehi aasama sabai Nepali....😢
