No mention of the most famous amphicar owner: US President Lyndon Johnson. Whenever he had guests, he would drive toward his lake, without telling them the car was amphibious, screaming about brake failure.
Saw the movie just recently, in fact I knew this kind of car exist because of thay, never thought this kind of car was actually built since decades ago...
I remember seeing one of these back in the early 60's. My mom took me on a picnic in the park and told me to watch when this one car came into view. I just could not believe it when the car drove right into the lake! It was amazing. Apparently the guy who owned the Amphicar liked to surprise people during his lunch hour by going to the park and crossing the lake. I've never forgotten how much fun it was to see that.
I remember seeing the same car in Branch Brook park as a kid in the 60's my mother told me it was owned by the park police who later transitioned to the Essex county police because everyone use to call them Squirrel cops....
I was a freelance photographer a couple decades ago . There was a small businessman who parked his amphicar in front of his storefront. I passed it a couple times and finally went in to talk to him about it . He told me he would take me and his daughter out in the lake one evening . The lake water was almost up to the top where door windows are open . We had a lot of splashing water come in . i think too many people in it causes it to sink lower towards the lake water level . A driver and one light passenger would have been better but i certainly am not a light passenger lol ! it was a lot of fun !
I rode in one in 1962. My Dad test drove one from the dealer. We didn't get to swim it. I never saw that anyone bought one in my hometown Superior, Wisconsin, USA. It was an ideal location because we had a large bay with only two bridges that were often blocked when they opened for ship traffic.
Wow! Why did your Dad decide against buying one though? We're curious, especially since we've never encountered someone from across the pond who actually took a test drive in the machine!
Neighbor has two of these. Has owned them since the 70s. A red one and an orange one. Used to see them out on the lake all the time. Been sitting in the garage for past 20 years or so.
They have like a yearly deal where all the owners gather together and have a few days of driving their cars in the lake . They meet at different places each year .
I first saw one of these when I was six years old. I spent much of the rest of my childhood trying to figure out how to persuade my dad that acquiring one would be a good idea.
I remember seeing on with my mother in the early to mid 1960's. We were sitting in our car on the banks of the Delaware River in South Jersey and saw one. We were amazed as the car drove up and over the banks and right into the water. It then proceeded to motor away down the river.
I think these are great. One of the questions most asked is why Trippel used mild steel instead of fiberglass. Fiberglass had already been used in boats and in automobiles like the Corvette and, IIRC, the Kaiser Darrin sports car. Fiberglass would certainly have reduced the rusting that is well known for these cars.
I saw one at Oak Lake in Lincoln Nebraska during the mid-60s when I was a kid. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw this red car moving slowly through the water like a boat and then drive right out of the lake and onto the land ... and away it went!
Went on vacation back when I was younger to Laughlin Nevada and some old guy had one of these I’ll never forget he asked if me and my cousins would like to see it drive we said sure he then said hop in and we slowly creeped into the water and we started floating I was shitting bricks thinking god we are gonna sink in this old ass car but no it floated and it was quick for a little amphibious car 😂... fun memories
I remember the first time one of the used car dealers took his to the lake which is in part of a residential area. He drove into the lake and it sunk after about six or eight foot into the lake. Me and one of my friends watched him . When it started to sink we both were laughing so hard tears were coming out of our eyes . His dad owned a Drugstore and my Dad was a big time Minister and worked for the state dealing with Juveniles. Later on my friend married the daughter of the car lot . I will never forget that. The lake was only four feet deep .
Disney Springs (formally “Downtown Disney”) has 3-4 of these beautiful cars that you can rent for a 20 minute cruise into the lake (their Captain is provided) for around $125 for 4.
Wow ! an amamize antique Amphibious car !!! better than much more high technical car right now !!! it's have beautiful feature out look, good driving on-road and simple design !!! I love it so much !!!! of course, not suitable on salt water....ha ha !
DW REV - Cars & Mobility I don’t have that much detail but I know it’ll going to be placed for show in museum which is going to be within the king’s palace in #Addis abeba said prime minister #abiy while touring the palace .
Somehow I get the feeling it seems like someone is consistently paying a lot of money to make sure this concept doesn't happen. Obviously the only excuse for not building this vehicle is money and all it takes to get such an idea going is 1 guy who has the money and wants to make a profit.
No mention of the most famous amphicar owner: US President Lyndon Johnson. Whenever he had guests, he would drive toward his lake, without telling them the car was amphibious, screaming about brake failure.
That's freaking hilarious! I would so do that.
Lmao I just checked it's true
Saw the movie just recently, in fact I knew this kind of car exist because of thay, never thought this kind of car was actually built since decades ago...
That's actually why i clicked on this video because i learned about that the other day lol
Will Poundstone congrats, you watched a clip of pawn stars saying exactly that

Was the owner President Johnson? Lol
My grandparents had one of these when my mother was little! She didn’t know the car could go in the water the first time!
I know where one of these has been sitting since I was a kid. 28 now and it's still there
lol me too
They want to sell it
Me as well

@@eljjjaliskillo4453 we would like to buy it if the condition is good or above!
My brother and I had one in Florida back in the 60s it was about 20,000$ then and was a blast

@@JinxGoober_03

You Lucky You I always wanted one couldn’t afford it tho really can’t now!😳Way it goes !
Wow you guys must have been hella rich. Damn.
Yep 20 grand was a lot of money back in the 60s . New American cars were right around $2000@@atthreyabalaji8740
My stepfather had one. I grew up with a amphicar, in the water. It was great.
You’ve just made us quite jealous...
My stepfather also had one in haiti 🇭🇹

I wish they still made such a thing. I'd love to have one.
REV has filmed an electric amphibious car. We will post the report next month 😀
Ain't electric and water don't mix?
Some guy owned this on my block in Brooklyn when I was a kid. We were fascinated by this vehicle and I've always wanted to own one!
New York is the trash of the world, surprised you guys didn't jack it

@@DWREVI'm surprised that little car made it across the pond.
That's a joke... Maybe Not a great one.😅 we'll have to work on it.

Imagine passing a nice boat on the water, I feel like this would be more of a flex then the boat
bro has got the most insane getaway vehicle
There's a movie (I've forgotten the name) where a man is being chased by the FBI. He used his Amphicar to escape across a lake into Canada.
The craziest part is that you found someone who had never tried his car in the water and got his first reaction on camera
About 8 years ago we were at Indian Lake and saw several of them. what a treat.
They have like a yearly deal where all the owners gather together and have a few days of driving their cars in the lake . They meet at different places each year .
I'm from San Diego. Evey day I would see 1 in the driveway. Were I was working. U can see the propellers from the back.

What a cool memory!

I can imagine that was quite a sight for a kid!
Whenever I told somebody about it, they looked at me sideways like I was just a little kid with a wild imagination.
I can imagine that would have been hard for the grown-ups to believe!
"First mass-produced amphibious car"

I like how he only locks the driver side door
Presumably the passenger side was already locked.
It doesn’t have a roof so it really doesn’t matter
Im going to need one of these, along with a lowrider....
It's kind of like the car float cheat in Vice City, where you can drive straight into the water.
I remember the first time one of the used car dealers took his to the lake which is in part of a residential area. He drove into the lake and it sunk after about six or eight foot into the lake. Me and one of my friends watched him . When it started to sink we both were laughing so hard tears were coming out of our eyes . We really needed to expand on this. What a shame
I wanna go fishing in one of those
Currently working on one of these interesting car by far
He also need a throw line, bailor and life jacket.
My dad had one of these.
Before my time unfortunately.
He's got many pics of it though.
Nice story. Too bad you never got to ride in it?
This just begs the question do you have to pay two registrations at the DMV for your car boat, one for the car part and boating?
Its a beautiful design.
My son and I saw one driving on the causeway two days ago in Clearwater Florida . It looked really cool.
You have to make a pic next time 😉

I got to see alot of these 2 years ago walking down the the beautiful seaside of pittsburgh, but it was like a tour bus full of tourists
My grandfather owned one of these. Would drive to the delta from the Bay Area for some fishing.
My new idea bel air, Corvette convertible, barbie car in this
I wish they would make a truck like that
Thanks
7:02 That bird lol
Why is no one making any today?
Google - Watercar
Far faster in water, been being made for years in California.
Someone did about 4 months.
Saw a similar car where I live. It was a modified VW bug. What really tipped me off was the plate: AQUABUG... lol
Seen one of these on Lake Havasu AZ. It was awesome
I love it!
7:00 - wild goose taking off.
Well spotted!
missing was the fishing rod and fishing hat while cruising.
Is this the Boat of Car I’ve heard so much about?
I like the look this is way cooler then what I expected when I looked up boat car

Any interest in latest developments in electric amphibious hydrofoil enhanced vehicles?
Yes! REV just filmed an electric amphibious car in Germany!
This is Awesome

DW REV - Cars & Mobility Your Welcome
I learned something new today
They even realize what they invented it’s the car of the future! A spy mobile!
We could all use one of these when the Big Flood comes!
Mc D's owns one 🕐 of those McLaren oops floating car i mean.
my late dad had one of these. but I was a baby at the time.
My town has 2. Both owned by the same family. One license plate says "I swim 2"
Imagine fishing in that
I NEED IT!!!
Architecture myself driving that by San Francisco while everyone stuck on traffic on the Bay bridge I'll be driving in the ocean
"The turning circle is a wopping 35 meters"... said as he turns the car closer 6 meters.
My mums friend had one and drove it into the serpentine london- police asked her get out 👻
Now that is funny!
I wonder if you could tune the engine to go faster?
On water or land? ;)
Both?
So, you are just going to narrate over someone else's video?
It was a good car but it rusted out fast if it was driven in the water very often
Forget floating, he's lucky it didn't get stuck on that sandy beach
You'd think people living in Vince....Vinace.....that city in Italy with streets of water.....would've bought them.
The Venice gondoliers would be very upset
Does this require a boat license?
interesting idea. needs to be redone with modern technology
Pity there never was an S version with a 90 HP Porsche 353 engine.
Can't get a dui cruising on the water with a beer in your hand with one of those bad boys
Bet they're an absolute nightmare to maintain.
But very very cool. I like different vehicles.
My daily driver is a 87 GMC Cabarello.
Thats a $100,000 car they just dropped in a lake,
@kim bodie found at least 3 in Europe for around £50,000/$60,000
Wow ! an amamize antique Amphibious car !!! better than much more high technical car right now !!! it's have beautiful feature out look, good driving on-road and simple design !!! I love it so much !!!! of course, not suitable on salt water....ha ha !
Thank you for correctly using a hyphen in the video title.
You'll float too!
this man looks like little finger in GoT
They were pushing them towards caravaners in Great Britain, for those who also had a caravan that floated. You could just drive up into the water.
How do I buy one
Its floating!!!! Its floating!!! 🤣🤣🤣😆😆
@Mike Gee I think as of now there are a lots of other amphicars available in the world. I guess u could complete your bucketlist
You can find this #car (first line production)in #Ethiopia in its own original appearance and grace too...it was owned by the #king #haileselassie
Fascinating. Do you know where he drove it?
