I had such a "duh" moment when you recommended laying out all your designs. That makes so much sense! I just finished my island, which means I have a desperate need to flatten and start over. LOL These are great tips.
This is PERFECT timing. I just finished my island for the first time last night and I'm really scared of losing motivation in a restart. But this was so so helpful!
Same! I want to get into playing AC but I’m scared I’ll lose motivation and restart my island for no reason 😭 EDIT: For background I’ve tried a couple times to get into it but failed; this time I want to really try tho!
From personal experience, I’ve always bounced back with a surge of inspiration and motivation at some point. I’ve taken months off animal crossing, my villagers hated me- and my flowers were everywhere- but since I was motivated I could get everything done.
Ok idk why I never thought to actually lay my designs down to see if they’re all cohesive! Love that! I’m thinking of doing an autumnal island next as well! Excited to see what you do :)
I am at this very stage. I'm choosing not to flatten this time because I find that when I do I rarely build up again as the joy of running without inclines or bridges is wonderful. I haven't settled on what look I'm going for this time, but working on an entrance is going to be my first step.
I am so glad i found this video! i was getting overwhelmed flattening out my island. ironic that i chose this video to play in the background while i am doing it :) Thank you for the great content!!
luckily for me i planned my island around the basic structure it already had, so i didnt have to completely flatten it. however im certain removing all the ground to make it mostly water is still tedious as heck;; tho im hoping itll make creating a rock garden slightly easier;;
I'm flattening my island for the first time soon and I'm so excited! This is really helpful, especially the idea of laying out all of the designs to make sure they flow together
When terraforming, you should always start by removing every second line of cliff. If there's 2 on the end, start from the side and do every second line from there. Never EVER do each line one at a time. It wastes so much time and watching you, even as an example, infuriates me lol Another pro tip: instead of turning and carefully positioning yourself before hitting the cliff, turn in a little circle. It will line you up with the next spot you want to remove. You can also press B to make tighter/faster turns. Use at your own discretion.
@@abbiotic777 I can help. The best way to think about cliffs and platforms is by imagining a grid. If you want to get rid of the second or third level of your island, walk along the ledge at the bottom. Every second grid space, dig out the cliff side. Dig along those rows (vertically) until you’re satisfied or it’s completely gone. Then you can go back to the cliffs you haven’t done and dig out those. It’s much faster and saves you time. If the cliff is a certain length, you may end up with two cliffs side by side with no middle cliff to dig out. If this happens go to the side and dig out every second grid space (horizontally). Once that’s done you can dig out the rest with ease.
having snacks and drinks and a movie on in the background is what I start with if I know I'm going to be playing for awhile. Glad to know that I am not the only one.
This video was very helpful and inspiring! With the game celebrating its third anniversary, I recently started a new 🏝 , Peachwood! The name was inspired by the native peach trees. Still very early on, don't even have Resident Services yet, and I'm not time traveling. But I aim to learn from the failures of my previous islands, which were all dumpster fires, and make Peachwood something truly special. I think the entryway might be the last thing I do. Since I plan to do my terraforming from the top down, I made the conscious decision to cluster as many homes as possible near the entry. That way I only have to move them once, saving time and bells!
Yess, thanks for this video I have been under the stress of not knowing how to decorate my island for 5 months and the truth is that I appreciate this video, I will apply your advice and I hope this time if I can decorate the island decently. Thank you thank you
These are all such great tips!! I am about to start my 3rd island, too, and I find all of these things really help. I've also finally learned to allow myself some room to change my plans/ideas on the fly because sometimes, once you really get going, ideas change. Personally, if I am not loving it, I just sort of stop playing. oop!
I’m glad you liked the tips Hayes! I’m definitely guilty of being rigid with my planning and putting the game away it’s not working too 🤣 all a part of the process though I think 🥰
Ive had 5 islands and i never finished any of them because i always changed my theme in the middle of decorating so i had to restart to find a new fitting name.. i just can't move on if something isnt perfect in my eyes, so now im sitting here flattening my new island and hoping i will keep my theme hahaha 😩
Me too! I’m very confused about what I want my general style to be (not fashion but everything else) and I can’t do anything I might like because “it’ll be tedious to change my theme every time”
I flattened my first island completely, then got too overwhelmed with how I was going to continue. I just reset for the first time (I’ll find you again chevre 😢 I promise) and really gonna try to do things in a more cohesive manner this time around, now that I know what mistakes I made the first time. All buildings are on the beach and I picked a layout that looked good to build off of. Will not be flattening this time around, but I’ll be using the layout I have and adjusting as I see fit. AND definitely starting with building the entrance first. I think that will really set the tone and inspire me to continue creatively
i just got an OLED to replace my switch lite and i’m super excited to start a new island! My old one is a mess and not aesthetically pleasing how i would like it, but i’m hoping my new one will be better planned
thank you for this video, those tips are really helpful! :) do you also have any tips on how you decide where to put certain areas? that's something i really struggle with because the map is just so big. i want to make my island feel more spaced out, but i am not sure where to start after decorating the entrance.
I'm glad this helped you! Planning the placement of things on the island might be a fun follow up to this video... I'll have to think some more about it!!
Thank you so much for sharing these helpful tips. Looking forward to watching more of your of your videos. I just found you on Sunday in Fleurs stream. Congrats on the 5000!
I'm just now at a point where I can even begin designing and that's because I'm super meticulous about certain details. I had to ensure my house was upgraded fully, including storage, and then once that was done, I began. I have a a few areas that I'm super happy with, but I'm really struggling to make it look great. At least in my eyes. I've seen some super awesome and beautiful islands and I feel like although I'm super creative in other things, I just can't seem to do what I want on this island. I have to have my trees a certain distance apart and set up in a way that I'm able to see them well. It drives me crazy when they're too close and I can't see what dropped. I want to use hills and elevate certain areas, so I started that. I kind of wish I hadn't so it was all flat still, but I had a huge cluster mess of villagers in one spot that needed to be moved so I could begin doing some things there. I have ideas, such as I want an outdoor music venue, a gym area, a farmers market, and I'd like to have a "city/plaza" area where you'd go to shop, get something from a cafe, and enjoy the boardwalk by the beach. BUT I CAN'T seem to get it together just right. I have a farm, which is important to me (maybe not others) which is something I've found during my "research" as I call it 😂 Certain things are important to one person and not to another, so that definitely goes into how your island is done up. I'm just lost. I want something amazing, yet simple. I just can't seem to get it down and that's what's bothering me. I've wasted bells because I had to move certain islander homes so I had the area to work with. Maybe I'm just too picky 🤦♀️ idk... I'd just love to have some help so I had a bit of guidance to go off of. I've absolutely delved into ACNH and as someone with social anxiety and spends her time at home (SAHM/housewife/homeschool teacher), my free time is being on my island. I've developed an attachment to certain Islanders because they remind me of my deceased parents - how they talk, the way their personalities are type of thing. It brings me comfort and helps me with my grief 🤷♀️ So I guess my island is my "home away from home" and I really want it to look nice.
I usually put my flowers on the beach if I want to save them, and any trees or bushes I just reserve a little spot qt the back of the island for them! I don’t save everything, just what I think I’ll need for the first few builds. Hope that helps a little!

Do you go into a new island with a plan or do you like to wing it?
I’ll have somewhat of a plan and then it’ll change along the way, lol
Wing it, godzilla statues everywhere thats the plan
I plan so much lol - I make a sample map just roughly, a pinterest board for sure, villager list and mood board if I'm feeling fancy :P

I try to fit as many as I can on the beaches! Or right next to the beach.
Yay a new video :)

I dont like flattening since the last time i did that i ended up not knowing how to rebuild it so i deleted my island
When you flatten your island, do you also cover all the rivers up? And where do you put the villagers and shops when you start building it up?
