Such silly things, I love them.
Note: they are also loud, always want attention, and have other special care instructions that make them more difficult to properly care for. I see too many people get birds and trap them in a cage. It hurts my heart. My tiel spends loads of time away from her cage.
They are smart creatures that require plenty of attention and stimulation. Treat them right or let somebody else do it.
I mean around 5 of my budgies are not tamed, and people say to let them out of the cage but also say not to chase them around. Plus we have a cat, I know, I know, it’s stupid to have a cat and birds but we will hopefully get a door so the cat can’t hurt them. Plus my brother used to smack him when he was near the cages, not insanely hard and abusive or anything, but I still wish he didn’t. But because of it the cat doesn’t really try to hurt them and just jumps on top of the cages to scare them (we have those decently tall rectangular birb cages). Pretty sure the cat only wants a high up place to sit and nap.
I hate that mine refuse to leave the cage cos I get a lot of heat from people who are like they arnt decoration and I’m like you don’t understand they have learned to attack my face so I put them back due to them starting an alergic reactsion in me
Our boys love their cage and always seem very relieved to return to it for some down time once they've had enough of being out. It's stressful for them to not be allowed their own safe space so it's a careful balance and depends on the nature of the birds as each and every cockatiel has its own very unique character, just like people.
I don't think they are loud compared to other birds. Budgies annoy me with their constant chatter. Other types of parrot are too loud. Cockatiels have times when they are quietly resting and times when they are vocal throughout the day. And girls are generally quieter than boys as well as being more even tempered.
One cockatiel will always be needy for attention from their humans. Giving them a friend for company makes for a much more relaxed and secure bird.
We had our cockatiel for more than 15 years now. His cage is always open at this point, because he knows the layout of our apartment and knows where not to go. So he just decides himself if he wants to be in the cage or outside. He doesn’t fly much anymore, probably due to his age. But he likes to sit on the roof of his cage and grind his beak 😇

My cockatiels literally mimic each other's mating call. And now all 5 of them sing the same song over and over and over. As for my budgies, my cockatiel raised one of them from day one of their hatching. So now my budgie speaks like a cockatiel 😂

I had a good boy named maverick. He was so full of personality. He died in my arms. I really loved that bird. I didn’t know how old he was when I got him. Apparently he was an old man. If you left your cereal for any reason he would be standing chest deep in milk picking cheerios out by the time you got back. He loved to be wherever I was and I really enjoyed his company. I miss his little songs he would whistle for me when I got up in the morning.
I had a tiel that jumped feet first in to a bowl of cereal before stealing a bite. Or any plate of food for that mater. He couldn't eat without sitting in the middle of the dish 🤦♀️
I had ( and still have ) one that always wanted to sit with me , and once , she jumped in my soup , another time she ate some pancake , and another time , i was eating a meatball , and she was sitting on my left shoulder , the TV was on myright side , i bit the meatball , my tiel tried to do the same , i sliiiiightly pushed her face back around 10mm and told her : Cockatiels don't eat meat! Then i turned my head right , then i wanted to get another bite and as i swung my head around , i saw her taking a bite .
As another maverick, can confirm if you leave cereal unattended around me I WILL be neck deep in your milk fishing for cheerios when you return.

Do not keep them alone! They are highly social animals and definitely need another cockatiel partner!
That’s true , if you have just one they take you as your partner and needs to stay all day with you .

Perfect description of cockatiels. Mine is a total prissy princess who gets very angry if she misses her daily scritch appointment, and even angrier if your scritches aren't good enough. I adore her ❤

We had two. Lived to be 16 and 18. One was exactly like this. Affectionate, playful, and a loudmouth. The other was abused by the store. But we always showered affection and kindness on her. And she knew she was loved. Even if she was aloof. I miss them both.
They are amazing little creatures, but do require lots of time and effort!
Cockatiels are a giant parrot in a little body!! I have been owned by and raised parrots and other small psittisines for 35+ years. Cockatiels give you more bang for your buck, as these little pint size birds are large parrots stuck in a tiny body.
They are EXTREMELY social birds that bond strong to their human flock and can become an active part of your family.
The nice thing, is that they are so MUCH more quiet than the larger birds and do NOT make nearly the mess of the larger birds.
They are NOT the kind of bird that you buy to just sit in a cage and look at them. They require stimulation and attention from their owners.
PLEASE, do NOT take on an animal without doing your research. If you do not have the time for an animal, a bird is DEFINITELY not the solution, as birds require a great deal of love and attention and they are NOT happy to just sit in a cage and be looked at.
Firewater by design, that's a good description of cockatiels. I would add to that, that they are much more intelligent than people give them credit for. The male I had was explicit in indicating his taste for my food ("Birdie want some," when diving feet first into my fried eggs) or declining to leave his high window perch ("Be right back,), or wanting to come out of his cage in the morning ("Birdie want to come out"), and several other requests/demands, in addition to excellent renditions of several musical pieces. Gregarious and lovable, both.

@@mikotheraskum2014 You're right! The guy that raised cockatiels was a plumber, kept them in a nesting box on top of his refrigerator and fed them every hour. He was a plumber, but devoted to his birds. And a great stamina, and tolerance for sleep deprivation, it appears.

no parrot is simple to care for. all parrots have very complex diets, you need to pay close attention to their behaviour, since like all birds they hide their illnesses and don't look ill for a newbie-keeper until they're very VERY sick. and you need to visit veterinarian ornithologist (fancy name for a vet for birds) several times a year and at least where i live that's not a common specialist.
p.s: there's more to it, but i don't want to write an essay on bird keeping.
p.p.s.: read the thread before leaving an answer and don't reason with me, i'm firm on my beliefs, hateful towards animal abusers, and this experience won't be pleasant for both of us.

@@merrygoround7557 well, i saw other videos of this guy about dog breeds and he tends to show everything in a good light. for example, he said jack russell terrier is a good family dog. which is not true. my neighbours have one and it's still a hunting dog, which needs heavy exercises and has a very strong bite, so much so, that if this dog bites a toy, you can lift the dog by the toy and walk with it around the house and the dog wont fall off. at least imo this is not what one would want nearby an infant.
I spent about a year studying everything about (Quaker) parrots & asking avian vets for the best information so I could ensure that my birds would get the best care. So many people think oh it’s easy throw your bird in a cage & feed it. Birds are very different from a cat or dog. Birds need so much more care & some of the smallest things kill them, like over heating a Teflon pan, burning candles, or using essential oil’s. Also birds need first-aid quickly because a small amount of blood lost is a major emergency for a small parrot! Just look up broken blood feathers it’s not something that can wait to be treated!
@@TigTig-Kitty the only thing i want to correct, if you throw a dog or a cat in a cage and just provide food, they'll be as miserable as a parrot. otherwise fully agreed. people see parrots as common pets, like turtles or hamsters, when they're actually exotic ones.
@@platannapipidae9621 my 13 year old JRT passed away almost 3 weeks ago and while, yes they are pretty hyper, in my experience they actually tend to be extremely loyal and smart dogs that can learn quickly that baby=human family member especially if acclimated correctly.

I had one growing up. He whistled songs and talked. He would sit on my shoulder when I walked through the house. He lived 26 years.
My granny had a cockatiel when I was growing up. They found him on the driveway and he willingly came in. He got along with our dogs at the time and would sit on them, and he already knew a song we all took the time to learn. Sadly after our dog passed and we had gotten another a year later, that dog did not like the bird so instead of the whole house the bird could only fly around one room unless the dog was outside (she used to tear the screen doors open if left outside for too long). Funny thing about the cockatiel was that he hated males and would always attack my grandpa, granny claims it’s because grandpa would get a skillet and tell the bird to get in it lol

We used to breed them. One pair were a nightmare from hell and they loved to nest in my room. Once I hear the chirping I know to cover myself with the bed sheets.

I had a female cockatiel for five years and she loved being pet. She also loved sleeping at my pillow when I just lay in my bed and play with my phone or read a book. she would nibble on my fingers and nails and push my hands towards her crown for me to scratch it 🥹🥹 I miss her soo much 🥺 unfortunately she passed away after she caught an eye infection 😭

cockatiels can live for 20 years. and parrots catch infections when their immunity is already compromised. so, they probably had several diseases, that you failed to notice.

They usually bond to one or 2 people (sometimes more). So if you’re a stranger, that’s probably why. My lil bud only let me and my parents pet him. Not even my other siblings could pet him.

@@SMG6- they probably just need to bond with you. Sometimes if all they have known is each other they will keep it exclusive unless you put in hard work to gain their trust. Research is your best friend (if you haven't tried that)
look up more information on how to gain a cockatiels trust and absolutely dont try to touch him if he runs away that might be the biggest reason he doesnt trust you. Always listen/look at your birds bodylanguage
You gotta make them trust you. Introduce yourself nicely to them, and sit near them until they feel kinda confortable. Just sit, dont come near them or anything. Then try to make a move, slowly.
I remembered we got this Cocateil named Jimmy and sadly it died back in 2020 because it died of old age and he was such a good friend and I loved him a lot

Are you sure it was a cockatiel? From my knowledge cockatiels don't have the vocal cords to talk like big parrots do. They can just mimic the tone and cadence and rhythm.

Our family owns a cockatiel named Benji. He’s coming on 27. Spends a lot of time these days sleeping. He adores Mum and only really becomes talkative when he wants scritches.
My cockatiel was born in my home with his siblings. He has lived past 25 yrs old. He likes to talk to me in my face lol

I've been a Cockatiel mom since 1995 & have loved every minute of it with them in my life. Right now I have 3, ages 23 & 2 are 16, all male. But I have had females too. Have had them since they were in their eggs. The hardest part of having them is when it's time for them to cross the rainbow bridge 😭. They are very social birds. If they are tame, they want you to be a part of their flock. If they see you eat, they want to eat with you. (But don't share your food with them because there are foods we can eat that's toxic to them). There are tons of Cockatiel websites that will explain what's good & bad for them. If they aren't tame, patience, time & parrots websites can also help you with taming & even training them. Finding books in bookstores can help. When I first became a bird mom, I didn't have internet on a phone to do any searching. Btw, my bird's names are Stormy (his mate was Sunshine), Junior, & Bear (his mate was Snuggles). Junior never had a mate. He was too interested in hanging out with me. 🤣 Junior's mom passed away in 2014 & I had her cremated. She's sitting on my dresser next to my bird cages. She's the only one I've had cremated. Didn't have the money to get the other ones cremated when they passed. But I am definitely cremating Junior when it's his turn. He is so attached to me. And when it's my turn, I'm having Junior & his mom be put in my casket with me in their little boxes. I never could have kids ( had a miscarriage when I was married in 1984 & was never able to get pregnant again. So my birds are my feathered children. ❤🐥🐥🐥❤

My uncle had 2 cockatiels and one died at around 20 years old, but the other died at like 34 years old, my uncle had him since he he himself had been a child

I have two now. :) And I've had multiple throughout my life.
One is a Petsmart boy who was super undersocialized when I got him. The other was a little cinnamon female bought from a pet store that specifically buys local birds as babies from trusted breeders. He's a handful and likes to scream on occasion, but he's come such a long way, and my little girl is a mama's girl and loves to cuddle.
I couldn't have asked for better feather babies. ❤
In my experience male cockatiels tend to have a more pronounced personality.
i have two hens and they have their personalities too :) i guess it's easier to tell with roos because they act a bit showoffishly so it's easier to know what they mean when they're trying to communicaye
I had a girl one, oh my god was she annoying, she just pooped everywhere and tried to jump from high places around the house and she almost always hurted herself, she also screamed really loud 24/7 no need to explain why we put her up to adoption, she hated us for no reason.

@@JayTheProduct yeah and maybe she was in an "adoption-loop" I hope they didn't get her from someone who put her up for adoption because they couldn't handle her. And I sincerely hope that the next person to take her will work through it and not just rehome her again.
My grandmother has one of these and he’s lived well into his thirties, probably one of the oldest ones alive!
So true... (in my opinion) these little fuzzballs are the most loveable and enjoyable animals on this planet.
I have one! His name is Miles, and he's very musical, loves humming little patterns and tunes. It's so adorable. But he actually doesn't really like to be touched all that much, we can pet him and all that but he usually just moves away and does his own thing. That's fine though, we just vibe.

I have cockatiels and they can't smell shit, a lot of birds cannot smell very well. They rely more on visual and audio stimulus.
Birds have a terrible sense of smell, just FYI.
Maybe your friend's cockatiel was overprotective of something or someone.
they are as social as humans, their diet in nature is even more diverse than human one and a newbie keeper can't really say if they're ill or not. so, imagine what would a combo of complete isolation, poor diet, mainly composed of porridge, and chronic pain do to a human. that what most of the parrots experience. by the way, parakeets can easily live to 20 years (record being 36 ears) and they live 5 years on average.

I rescued a male cockateil when I was around 12-13 yrs old. The previous owner had teached it this specific melody, it was the only thing it could "sing"... It lived in the house with me, but after about a week I went absolutely mad in the head. So I moved him outside in the big aviary with our other birds. Problem was now, that the big aviary was right next to our terrace, so the summers where real fun 😂😂😂
He was a cheeky bird and we loved him, but my good he could drive us absolutely mad with that stupid melody. I'm 28 now and CAN STILL REMEMBER IT! 😂😂

It's important to take care if these creatures. They depend on us. We can't leave them by themselves. They would not only die starving, but also feel sadness. That would be unacceptable.
Our cockatiel spent a week at a family friend's house 10+ years ago and decided that their washing machine noise which is a series of ear-splitting high-pitched consecutive beeps is one his favourite noises to copy to this day. He also came to my dad while he was in the backyard gardening, landing at his feet and letting himself be guided into a cage, making us think he was an escaped pet. We never found his original owners despite putting him up on Facebook, but he told us his name was Rocky, because his other things he says are "Hello Rocky" and "Pretty bird". He's scared of hands, but loves being face to face with humans through his cage.
I think that the males being more vocal would make a lot of sense! In the wild (or even just in general) they would probably have to put on a show including vocals to attract a mate
I had a cockatiel that I found underneath my ac unit, poor thing was hiding underneath for three days and would always chirp and sing until we finally found him. He lived with us for three more years and would love when my mum had music playing and sing along, one afternoon my dad was washing his cage outside with him. He loved getting sprayed with light mist from the hose he managed to open the door to his big cage jump to the floor and flew off.
I used to call them "Pikachu birds" because I was obsessed with Pokemon and they have the same red cheek circles.
I was crushed to learn they can't make thunderbolts.
We had a cockatiel for just over a decade. He'd have lived longer, but he was very, very attached to my husband; when my husband went into the hospital for several weeks, our bird pined away. He lasted until his favourite human was home from the hospital, passing away the following day.

My Nana's cockatiel lived to be 25. I was with her the day she bought him as a hatchling. She brought him home before my hubby and I married and he passed away shortly before our 26th wedding anniversary ❤️ Sammy was a wonderful pet and a big part of our family.

when he sees it. He saw a shark going after a SeaLion and threw a fit.. He doesn’t like Martial Arts… I put a toilet paper, cardboard in his cage
for something new to play with.. He stuck his head into it and talks and sings in it. When I try to videotape him, he stops what he is doing… He is cute in the morning. I take his cover off and he stands on the side of his cage and goes back and forth very fast, yelling, “ Mommy, Mommy, Mommy.” He is 11 years old now. I love him 😍

Their much larger cousins, the black cockatoo, have been known to live for up to 135 years!! Sadly there aren't many left these days.

My cockatiel, Bilbo, lived to be 23. He would often say, "He's a baby bird" because when we weren't using his given name, that's what we called him. "Baby Bird." We lived through the Northridge Earthquake in Santa Clarita. Our home received lots of damage. (Well over $250K of damage.) Every time an aftershock was about to take place, Bilbo would start screaming like a crazy bird and then, suddenly, he'd go silent and remain very still on his perch. Within10 seconds max, the aftershock would hit.
my dad said I can get a cockatiel when he finds a good house, this really helped me understand what they're like so thank you so much

Oh don't worry about it. Some of them go for the eyes but that's not typical most of them go for your hands or your feet. Birds love to be little toe sharks

I had a cockatiel named Sunny when I was little, and he was such a sweet little guy. Whenever I'd take him out of his cage, he'd get super clingy and dig his talons into my shirt to ride around on my chest. I had to be careful with opening my mouth while he was there, because he'd jam his head in there and start trying to clean my teeth. I miss that little guy so much.

My aunt had two cockatiels and they were around almost as long as I’ve been around; they’ve got to be pushing 22/23 years old. The female died a few months ago, but the male is still alive and kicking. He likes to sing to my cousin’s boyfriend during family gatherings :)

For some reason I'm always shocked to hear how long some animals can live having only had dogs who hit middle age at 7.
Birds have ridiculously long lifespans. Macaws and African Grays can live 70-80 years, I've heard. And hell, then you have tortoises that can live even longer. It's wild.

my mom bought me a toy made for a bird when I was four and I still have it on my dresser drawer to this day, still in it's original package, waiting for the day I finally get my bird 💕
Used to have one named Snuggles, he only lived about 10-12 years, he was my best little buddy and my mom taught him a cheery little whistle that I still remember to this day, I'm not sure where it's from. I miss him alot 💙 Rip buddy

This reminds me of Sunny, my canary when I was little, that I use to let out of his cage to have the freedom to fly around. One day, I could not find him and overtime, I found him stuck in the bottom of a vase. Dead. 😢

I had an adopted one that never left her cage and never wanted to be touched, but also didn't like it when i left the room. Even her previous owners said she had an unfriendly disposition from birth, while her brother loved people.
