Just the expensive ones from this video give more comfort to your legs. I feel my legs a lot less when running with the vaporfly 2 Nike shoes compared to cheaper shoes that I have.
great video, and surprising results! Results I can use because I don't really have the budget for a $300 running shoe (or just don't want to spend that much!) So now I have no excuse for not getting out there every day! thank you.

Your dedication to run is amazing and this is the first time I've seen a full fledge run test. Great job with the video and thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Great video as always Göran - thank you! My last pair of running shoes was a pair of Nikes that were like 80euros and they were performing a lot better than the previous Asics I had. Did 900km in them injury free. Like you say in the video, you don't need to spend loads on the top of the range to get good results.
Great vid! I also love the Logitech setup you have 😁 I don' run often so for me there is a difference between the 40$ shoes and the more expensive ones. I tried running with a similar model for quite some time, took some rest so I can get out of the perfect aerobic shape and when I returned I have used the Nike pegasus ( way cheaper than yours) and I got like 3bpm difference in advantage of the Pegasus but mb our bodies respond different since our background is diff as well. Both tests were done for the same distance on a track.
Always a good time watching you, Göran! They talk wonders about how these expensive shoes help with recovering. Actually, probably one of the best points I've heard about them. I also understand that's a big point for elite runners, not so much for recreational runners. But it may be worth testing as well. E.g.: one week training with ones and the others and comparing perceived efforts and heart rates at the end of the week? Have a good day, thanks!
Thank you very much Göran Winblad for the brilliant comparison, i love this! for me as a beginner and just running casually, this video really gave me pretty good insight about how much difference i 'theoretically' going to achieve, IF i ever wear these high-performance expensive competitive shoes.
To be fair you're a great runner and at 3.15/km unless they are bricks you'll be fast in most running trainers. Finally a running review by a really good runner
Nice video! Crazy that the differences are so small. Althought it's known, that the alphafly really excells in long distance. I'd be interested in seeing a comparison half marathon or marathon :P

I have been running with different variants of Nike Free for over 10 years (including 11 marathons). For me, a nice compromise between real minimal or barefoot shoes and regular, over-padded ones.
I watch a lot of running videos, but this was the first of yours that I have seen. I love the quality of your production. 2 things that I’ve seen in the comments that I agree with. 1. Put the stats on screen. 2. The likes of the alpha fly are designed for longer runs, so a half marathon comparison would be great to see. I’m subscribing ... let’s see what your content looks like going forward...👍🙂
Nice video, however I think a better comparison would be something like the cheaper Nike shoes vs the Nike Pegasus. The alphaflys and vaporflys aren’t really supposed to be used on your daily runs and are only supposed to be used for races time trails etc. They are not really a like for like use comparison. With the Pegasus you have a €120 daily trainer, which many will swear by for comfort, running feel etc. The question I think from a lot of people getting into running would be, “do I need to spend on a Pegasus or can I buy the cheaper alternative, and get good miles on them without risking injury to knees etc?”
You're right. This is strange to say the least, its a cool video but its not accurate or logic to say the least. I ran with a pair of well used vomero 10 (never before used in running) a few years ago 2 times a week for 1 month (5 to 11kms per day) and I ended up injured and in need of treatment and spent a lot of money until I got fully recovered. Why? Because I used some cheap used shoes that messed up my chin and knees. They weren't responsive and they weren't cushioned like they should be, so now that I'm feeling like running again I'm spending money on a Novablast 2 o cumulus 23 that I'll purchase in Black Friday for 60 or 70€.
Wow, thanks for this comparison. Even if it's not very scientific (as you mentioned too), it's a very insightful test. Thanks. Personally I think that as runners we should change shoes and train the majority in "slower" shoes or even sometimes barefoot to challenge our body. Thanks again ❤
Great video! Thanks for that. I tried many different brands with different prices. But i have to say.. the alphafly is the best shoe ive ever had. Before i had my alphafly i always run like 1 km in 5.40 to 5.45 on a half marathon. Now my time is between 5.10 to 5.15 for 1 km. So well... I only can speak for myself but. Its worth the money
@@SyedNizamudeen yeah I couldn't agree more. A shoe salesman tried to sell me on a pair if Nee Balance Fuel Cell Elites by talking about all the races they'd won. I'm pretty sure the athletes wearing the shoe won the races. This isn't like horse racing, runners don't jockey their shoes to the finish line. Paul Chelimo won a race after one of his shoes flew off, and Eliud Kipchoge won a race with his insoles sticking out the heel of his shoes. Let's simmer down this excitement over the Alphafly's a touch.

This is a great video! You didn’t bash the $40 dollar shoes even though they did not feel as good as the expensive ones. This is for sure a useful video for people who run all the time and people who run every now and then👌🏻
This is very interesting, unique and bold comparison. And very nice way to conclude. Keep up the great work. Looking forward for a lot more videos from you.
cool video. In Born to Run ch 25 there is a study quoted that states runners in cheap shoes get less injuries than those in more expensive shoes. ($40 vs $100 but in 90's money). It's an old study but very interesting conclusions.
Because vaporfly for instance isn’t made for stability or even toebox. It’s made for pure speed and same probably applied to the shoes they were using.
I think they are meant to bring greatest benefits over long distances. Would be interesting how they compare in at least a half marathon. Nice comparison anyway!
I ordered a new pair of Nike Pegasus 38's yesterday. And a few days before that I bought a pair of Brooks Hyperion Tempo. I think that BROOKS makes the absolute most comfortable shoe that I've ever worn but I'm not often able to afford them as BROOKS tend to go well beyond $150 bucks but I found them from the Brooks website on sale - regular $200 on sale for $104 - I couldn't say no to that deal!!
Try running in a budget shoe for a year and see where your motivation goes from there. More than likely you will have an overuse injury due to your foot accumulating a lot of micro damages and losing interest very fast. Comfort is something that is taken for granted, being able to run five days a week because your shoe allows you do to that. I can run barefoot at a 3:00min pace, could I do it all week probably not. I could spend less money and not use wireless headphones, I can run without a Garmin watch. The running experience improves through a bit more careful consideration of what equipment you choose.
The price difference simply does not reflect the running quality of each pair. Both will do the job and won’t cause any injuries. Smart training and strength training will mean so much more for the longevity.
Great review . If you do more of these maybe you could rate different aspects of both, from 1 to 10..Like grip, speed, how comfortable they are etc... Something like that. But anyway really useful review
I've got to say that at least from a cosmetic standpoint, the cheaper Nike Renew Run is a nice-looking shoe. I'm not a runner but I'm on my feet all day in a kitchen with hard tiles on the floor so I always try to buy a more-than-just-decent pair of shoes. Living here in Canada, I've never spent more than $150 bucks on a pair of shoes. That said, I must say that the shoe that has impressed me the most from simply the perspective of comfort, is the Nike Pegasus. I've had many pairs over the years and they're really a great shoe that does come close to my limit as far as the price goes so often I've got to buy them either on sale or the pair that was released a few years back.
it really depends on your level, and how long you train in these shoes - it will make a big difference, goal - to feel great for 20 km or not to feel your own weight when you are running
I am on a budget so I cannot afford to buy the smartest and newest shoes. On the other hand I find that the cheap ones wear out really fast, so I tend to go for last years model of the better models, or older if I know and like a particular model. This way you never own the 'top of the pops' but you do save a lot of money and get to run in really good shoes too.
One thing a short test can't quantify is how much the more expensive (better cushioned) shoe may prevent injuries to your calves, knees, shin splints, etc. That injury prevention and ability to train injury-free for the long-haul may be well worth the extra $250 for someone who would otherwise have months of downtime or very expensive surgury and/or physical therapy.
Great video Göran, I guess you might see more of an energy deviation between your two candidate shoes over longer distances e.g., half or marathon or longer - the Alphafly's do look like fun!
Hi Goran. Where are you. Every house in the neighborhood architecture is so elegant with minimilistic construction. I love the interior design equally of your house equally. Bless you
I did a test...the next %2s were half a mile per hour faster over hoka bondi 6. Incredible! Please do another test to see how far you can run in 1 hour?
Pro golfer did a test w inexpensive vs very expensive clubs. Golfer concluded that the money you save and take golf lessons would be more efficient to lower your score. The equipment needs to be sufficient, but it's the proper training that makes improvement.
It's kinda sad how youtube doesn't show you on my recommended page :( I rarely get notifications too. Do you have Instagram so I can see when you upload?
Ok that's strange I'm glad you found this video anyway, yeah I have Instagram same name there goranwinblad I always update my story there when I post a new video here on YT.
As a distance runner i truly believe that price is equal to quality. if you pay less money, you get a lesser quality shoe. if you pay more money, you get a higher quality shoe (in perspective of racing). so i’d say don’t cheap out, but don’t spend the top dollar if you aren’t gonna be racing any time soon.
Great video as always. For us normal «Sunday joggers» I think you just proved that equipment doesn’t matter. However, I think you make a great point when you say that if an expensive shoe motivates you more, go for it. In the end, motivation is what matters most for progression.
Thanks! Yeah that is so true if something can motivate you to train more I think it's a good investment in your self and in your health. But yeah I think some people believe they need expensive gear even to start running and that is really not the case 😊
Next time you do a comparison, please test the cheap shoes one day and the "super" ones the next day. While you have run in both at the same remarkable pace, you should consider that you were surely affected by the previous 6x1K (I'm talking about how much you've fatigued your legs muscles, nothing to do with the heart rate). I tested a lot of shoes at the running track, doing 5x1K and the difference between "normal shoes" and carbon plated with PEBAX foam is noticeable. i.e. the Saucony Ride 15 are 8 seconds slower than the Nike Vaporfly and 7 seconds slower than the Saucony Pro 2 on a 5K. Talking about the current shoes are now on the market, the Pro 3 are 17 seconds faster than the Pro 2, which means that the Pro 3 are 25 seconds faster than the Ride 15 on a 5K. This means, running 5 seconds per km faster, which is a big improvement in terms of performances. My 2 cents.
Good video,! The main difference I've seen with expensive shoes (as someone with an old knee injury) is they tend to be more cushioned and absorb more of the impact for me.
Hey Göran, thank you for the video. As I understand the advantage of more expensive shoes opens when you run long. Like marathons. If I calculated everything right, these 0.2sec per every 80m will be 2.5sec per 1km. And for a full marathon, it's going to be 2.5x42=105sec. Or 1min 45sec. So, it makes sense when you're on top of your shape and fight for every minute. And you're right. For an amateur (like me and 99% of the people here) having $300 shoes doesn't make sense at all. Thank you for sharing. :)
Your calculation in terms of actual math is correct but you can't apply it here. Running math is complete different and varies from week to week, course to course. You also are neglecting to factor in distance, route(inclines etc) plus many more things. I have a pair of Vaporflys and while they were expensive the cost then becomes more than monetary value depending on your activity. Also say you buy these at 40 then you hate them and they are wrong for your foot, you are then limited to say trainers 60 and above - you've then spend £100.00, I paid 140.00 for my vapourfly new.
Something nearly impossible to measure is how the shoe protects a runner from injury. That's probably more important than outright speed. Less injury = more training capacity = better results. I think the only way it could be measured is by having a mass poll of regular runners over time. Record shoe, injury type and frequency, training volume and intensity. Got to be a Phd paper in this.
I'm not even a runner, but I went on a buying spree with Nike in the latter half of 2021, when the Renew Run, was out. I thought they were SO SQUISHY, just for walking around, and the occasional exercise, I ended up buying 6 pair of them! Glad I did, because they're all gone, now, except for pre-worn, on eBay. It's a great shoe. 👍
This dude is so happy it somehow makes me happy 😂

Thanks! You have saved my precious money.
I would expect $300 shoes to easily outperform $40 shoes. I'd like to see a test comparing something like $65 shoes vs. $120 shoes.
Oozes good vibes and excellent quality ❤️🌿
Thanks 😊
Great review . If you do more of these maybe you could rate different aspects of both, from 1 to 10..Like grip, speed, how comfortable they are etc... Something like that. But anyway really useful review
Thanks ok good suggestions!
Great video, great conclusion 👍🏼
Thanks 😊
So interesting report for who are thinking to buy a new running shoes. Very useful and to the point!!
Thanks, I'm glad to hear you found it helpful 😊
I can tell you're in shape. You're smiling while running that much
One thing a short test can't quantify is how much the more expensive (better cushioned) shoe may prevent injuries to your calves, knees, shin splints, etc. That injury prevention and ability to train injury-free for the long-haul may be well worth the extra $250 for someone who would otherwise have months of downtime or very expensive surgury and/or physical therapy.
Your videos are so helpful
I like how you compared them
Thank you
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it!
I once got a flat foot from wearing vans. I’m afraid to buy cheap shoes or flats now.
Great video Göran, I guess you might see more of an energy deviation between your two candidate shoes over longer distances e.g., half or marathon or longer - the Alphafly's do look like fun!
Thanks! Yeah you are probably right about that, yeah they are a bit weird but very fun to run with 😊
I can’t use the information for my next purchase but this was very entertaining and felt good
U have such a nice and calming happy energy 😊
Love your videos and smiles. Keep up you are wounderful
That was a really awesome video 👍 Hello from the U.S. 👋
Hi Goran. Where are you. Every house in the neighborhood architecture is so elegant with minimilistic construction. I love the interior design equally of your house equally. Bless you
I'm glad they were similar because there is no way I can afford to spend 300 bucks on a pair of running shoes 🤣
You can for sure enjoy running just as much without spending a lot of money that one of the great things with running 😁
You also have to get a pair or shoes that makes you excited to go out for a run IMO
I did a test...the next %2s were half a mile per hour faster over hoka bondi 6. Incredible! Please do another test to see how far you can run in 1 hour?
@@Louiejacob2 shoes don't get me excited to run what kind of crap is that. Just do the work and run
@@stayontrack I guess that’s subjective 🤷♂️
I was very fascinated about expensive shoes. Now I know 😄. Thanks bro. Love from india 🇮🇳
Pro golfer did a test w inexpensive vs very expensive clubs. Golfer concluded that the money you save and take golf lessons would be more efficient to lower your score. The equipment needs to be sufficient, but it's the proper training that makes improvement.
Ok that's cool to hear, yeah training is for sure the most important thing no matter what you want to become good at!
Great vid, you seem like a great person!
Thanks 😊
MY MAN BABCK AT IT AGAIN
It's kinda sad how youtube doesn't show you on my recommended page :( I rarely get notifications too. Do you have Instagram so I can see when you upload?
Ok that's strange I'm glad you found this video anyway, yeah I have Instagram same name there goranwinblad I always update my story there when I post a new video here on YT.
Elsker din dialekt :D best wishes fra Litauen 👋
I love the positivity
I just bought Nike Renew Run 2, thanks for the video comparison, it indeed helps, #cheers
how can u not see that bright yellow green Nike when running, u can see them from 3km
My 2 cents.
You are soo polite 🥺
Good video, most Kenyan runners, run with simple shoes, very cheap, but they always win those marathons,
Haha real committed reviewer.
Thanks!
Haha thanks 😅
Brilliant comparison
Thanks 😊
Good video,! The main difference I've seen with expensive shoes (as someone with an old knee injury) is they tend to be more cushioned and absorb more of the impact for me.
Thanks! Yeah that is true, for sure the Alphafly was a lot more cushioned than the Nike Renew Run.
Hey! I'm glad you liked it 😊 Yeah that's a good analysis!
I think they should be tested for long runs, considering alpha flies developed at marathon distance as i know also with mrathon runners feedbacks.
Excellent point. Worth searching for a paper on this on a lazy afternoon.
great video, appreciate you take into account placebo effect and first did a blind test
Excellent presentation!
Good to see ur smiling face Sir
I wonder if she considered putting on a mismatched pair for fun?
I'm not even a runner, but I went on a buying spree with Nike in the latter half of 2021, when the Renew Run, was out. I thought they were SO SQUISHY, just for walking around, and the occasional exercise, I ended up buying 6 pair of them! Glad I did, because they're all gone, now, except for pre-worn, on eBay. It's a great shoe. 👍
Nice review. Keep running!
Thanks! 🏃🏻
Really enjoyed this vid
Thanks, glad to hear!
