Using a 1950s film camera in 2020? | Voigtlander Vito B | APX 400 | film street photography walk

  • Using a camera from the 1950s in 2020? Join Eva with this 70 year old camera in a film street photography walk around the Swedish city of Uppsala. The super silent and small Voigtlander Vito B loaded with Agfa APX 400 film did super well for this purpose.
    If you are looking for an affordable, well built and sharp classic camera we can totally recommend this one, provided that you use a dedicated light meter or app on your phone. The zone focusing system is very straight forward if the camera is used at f/5.6 or smaller.
    You can check out more about this camera, how it is loaded and the zone focusing system in our previous Vito B video: • SHOOT FILM | Voigtland...
    We really hope you like this walk and use of a vintage camera in 2020 for some street photography. Please let us know by commenting, liking and subscribing and we will keep them coming!

    Cool video! I recently picked up a Vito B and have been working through the first roll of film and really enjoy the feel of this little tank of a camera in my hands. I'm a real estate and construction photographer by day and have this little guy along with me most of the time and try to find interesting scenes along my routes. I really like the forced simplicity in using this camera, but figuring out the focus without a rangefinder is where I get nervous with it. I like street photography as a genre and would love to get out and explore my city once it gets a bit safer out there. Stay safe and keep dropping those interesting nuggets of science wisdom!

      So great you are also using a Vito B! I understand the feeling of not having a real way to focus but I believe the more you practice the better you’ll get a estimating distance and will get good results more often than not. If you use Instagram don’t hesitate to connect with us there so we can see also your work! Take care and thank you for engaging ☺️

    I really enjoyed this video thanks. One of my film cameras is an Agfa Silette camera which is very similar to the Vito B in all respects. It is a solidly built, all mechanical metal camera, also from the 1950s. It is the actual camera my dad used to take photos of me when I was a baby in the early 1960s so I have a real connection to it. It is excellent to use for street photography being very small and discreet, and almost silent in use, again very much like the Vito B you use here. I just love mechanical film cameras since they require some thinking and knowledge to use effectively. Kind regards.

      hi Ian! this is such a lovely comment - heartwarming story about your relationship with your camera. The story behind old cameras is one of the things we love about them. Another reason we love old cameras is precisely how they slow you down and make you think before shooting :D we just got a Kodak Retina also fully mechanical and I am dying to go out and try it!! :D Take care.

      @@CrunchyFingers Can you also take colored pictures with this camera if you use a different film?:)

    • @CrunchyFingers
      @CrunchyFingers  3 роки тому +1

      Yes, sure thing! The characteristics of the photo regarding color come from the film used, so if you use color negative film, like fuji c200 or Kodak ultramax (to mention two readily available ones) you will get color images. Good luck with shooting!

    I recently bought the Vitomatic ii. It has a working range finder and light meter and is utterly fabulous. I am not a big fan of the APX, preferring something a bit more contrasty like Rollei RPX or Rollei retro. Excellent video, full of interesting detail. Well done

    • @CrunchyFingers
      @CrunchyFingers  3 роки тому +1

      Hey! No, this is a point and shoot and the viewfinder doesn’t have connection with the lens, for that you need a reflex lens camera, either single or twin (SLR and TLR respectively). Hope you enjoy shooting with your new camera! 🙌🏻

    What is the tool you looked thru that showed you the lighting and f-stop?

    • @CrunchyFingers
      @CrunchyFingers  3 роки тому +2

      It’s a lightmeter. This one is a reflective spotmeter in particular - Pentax brand! You set your film iso in it and look at a point in your scene and the lightmeter gives you an exposure value for that specific spot. Then you move the dials to set that value in, and you get the correspondent shutter speed and aperture needed to get a good exposure. We will make a video about using this kind of meter very soon ☺️ stay tuned!

    is this camera radio active?

    • @CrunchyFingers
      @CrunchyFingers  3 роки тому +1

      Hi! I don’t think so. I have heard of some vintage lenses being a bit radioactive because of some specific compound in the glass. I looked into it a bit more now and can’t seem to find any reports of the lens in the vitoB being radioactive. But if you are curious as to which lenses might, check here: camerapedia.fandom.com/wiki/Radioactive_lenses
