The camera is designed to do what GoPros were originally designed to do, which has been forgotten by many people. It was not designed for people to sit in their homemade studios and film themselves. It’s an action camera.
@@DavidManningvlog yes but the problem with most bloggers/youtubers doing reviews is they are all "film makers" "creators" or whatever self proclaimed title they give themselves. GoPro give it to people in studios to test. They test it with thermometers and studios, and say the run time without over heating is XX minutes but who needs to record that long? Answer: action sports people! You tell a base jumper they can't jump until camera cools down, tell a free climber to stop and get in some shade, rally driver can you pull over to give the cameras an icebath? A lot of action camera users use it for action, and sometimes that means not missing one second, as opposed to using it to capture their cinematic flipflop. No camera should over heat. Actions sports need reliability. There's rarely a take 2 option. Just my 2 cents.
I dig it. I know that some people are bummed about not being able to switch out the batteries on the go, but I agree with you on sort of being a "side camera" to your regular GoPro. This isn't meant to be your main GoPro that you use constantly.

I don't mess with the settings much underwater - so this might be perfect! Although without an interface, it might not let you turn off Wifi which could drain the battery...
All settings are done through your phone app so set it and go. Once setup no need to go back in unless there is a good reason. As for battery it would be good if it can be taken apart and new battery fitted or it just becomes electrical waste and that’s not good for the planet.

I would say id use the mini for anything id use a session for, anything with high impact risk (only thing to replace is the lens), its smaller so it hides away under helmets better and fits into smaller nooks. Second angle camera? Nah I think main angle camera for people doing actual action sports.
Too bad they didn't think to place the lens centered over the mounting. So if you want your footage centered over your surfboard, handlebars, chin, chest, or wherever you mount it, for the view to be actually centered you have to place the mount slightly off-center. So, is the camera completely controlled through the app or can you start and stop recording from the camera itself? You didn't mention any of the operation of it.

I am actually considering this mini. I already own a hero 9 and 10. For the right price I would pick this up. I know during black friday I will be able to get this at a military discount tax free. To me this would be worth 199 but no more than 250.

I have issues with the other cameras where I have to reset the battery because it fails. Though I havent used the the battery tech. Can you do a underwater temp test with the mini?
Hey David, how would you hook up a mic to this? The media mod obviously won't fit (unless they introduce a new one for it). I am thinking of using it as a moto vlogging camera mounted on the helmet, being lighter. But, I am concerned about battery life & mic input.
Battery life should be just fine. As for the mic input, there isn't one. So you may need to have an external mic record to a different device and then sync in post. However, I am not an audio recording expert.
@@JaredPhillips thanks but I'm aware there is no mic input, im wondering if the mic adapter (3.5mm) will work, or if there is a different accessory, or if it is just not possible?
I realise how much work this would be, but I'd love to get a comparison between the 11 Black and the 11 Black mini, of recording/overheating times in a couple of different resolutions. Even better would be to know when it will overheat when powered with USB, as I personally am looking into using these for on stage cameras at festivals and concerts where ideally they should be able to keep recording for hours. I would probably only use it at the highest resolution/framerate combo that it could handle indefinitely instead of pushing it further. I know this is an action cam, designed to be moving (thus getting sufficient airflow) and not to be standing still recording for hours like in my use case or like in a studio environment, but there don't seem to be any other sub $500 cameras that can do the same high resolution and framerates that many action cams can do.
It's weird because in your hands, I can feel a slight difference between the 11 and the mini, but on a mount it feels much more significant of a difference
HERO11 Black Mini is $299.98 for GoPro Subscribers and $399.99 without subscribing. Mini does not support Media Mod nor 3.5mm Pro Mic Adapter. If you need the capability to plug in an external mic, take a look at HERO11 Black with Media Mod or the 3.5mm Pro Mic Adapter. 👍
Thanks for the vid! I can’t wait to receive mine. I’m glad to see it shipped 10 days earlier than last expected. I plan to use mine mounted in the more rugged settings. I killed a 10 after I submerged it in the pool a day or two after I cracked the rear screen. The 10 will remain as my versatile hand cam…the mini mounted.
I would've liked to have known; 1. How much does it weigh? 2. Does it have the same settings functions? If so, are they programmable through the phone, or? 3. How is the interface with the phone/app? Are you finally able to see what you're filming, while you're filming, on the phone/ app? If you are using two GoPros at once, how is the interface with the app? Is one the default, how do you switch between the two, can you mirror settings, can you set separate settings, etc
Solid questions Trixie! 1. Camera comes in at 133g, so about 20g lighter than the full sized 11 2. All settings are programmable through the phone and it can do everything BUT photos mode 3. Quik app is solid. You still can't see while recording, but you can see a preview before hitting record to setup your shot. I'm pretty sure that's a patent issue that GoPro is facing. 4. The Quik app is actually really good about switching between controlling multiple GoPros. Just tap which one you want to change and it connects in about three seconds BONUS: I'm not sure yet if this works with the GoPro remote, but I would imagine it does
Also I'm planning to buy gopro 11 to use with my insta360 x3.. but I am wanting to combine all my videos from both cameras into 1 ..is that do able and simple as loading SD into 1 video editing software?
Nice unboxing!! Question: The legs can be removed? If so, what would be the weight without legs? I'll use it mainly for FPV and would be great a few less grams
you do seem to have gone above and beyond - getting rained on quite spectacularly! that is some next level madness, let's hope you don't get a cold or flu after doing that craziness!!!! Was that the audio straight out of the mini? can you attach external mic to it?! and what is the cost - not of the whole box of things you got going on there - very cool by the way. another excellent adventure.
I currently use a GoPro hero 7 for fpv drones. Should I buy the hero 11 black mini for fpv? I already have the non-mini hero 11 black. Is it worth the upgrade?
Thanks for the review. I've been looking for a replacement for my session 5 but not sure that's it. It's much heavier than the session and not much lighter than the full version. Could you talk about horizon lock? That's important for actual action filming where the camera can spin 360.
I love your videos man. I have the regular Hero 11 and my concern is when shooting in high quality and frames the battery tends to drain faster. I really would like to get this mini but the lack of option to swap a battery not sure if that is something for me. Also, do you know the lifespan on this battery in terms of how many times it can be charged? Thanks.
I’m excited about the rear mount! I use my other cameras on my belt, but they don’t tilt up due to the bottom mounts, so I have to mount upside down and hope that it records the correct direction when I hit the button.
thanks for not taking a huge dump on this mini like everyone else i watched 😅 I just got mine, a bit late I know.. but it makes me feel a heck of a lot better! 🙏👊
I’m the one person who uses the GoPro in low light, specifically the “Night Lapse” feature. Interestingly in my tests the Hero 11 is terrible with this and the Hero 10 is perfect. I’m curious if the sensor is worse for low light? Anyway this comment belongs in another video but dropping it here. Epic video!
Super interesting to hear that Jason! GoPro actually touts that the Hero 11 has better low light performance than the 10, but with a new sensor design, I wonder if they just haven't optimized the software for the new sensor yet. I'll do some testing on this and maybe we have a new video on our hands!
@@DavidManningvlog as a follow up, I installed the new firmware and it has improved the output. However I shot this morning using the Hero 10 beside the hero 11. Same standard night lapse settings. The Hero 10 produced a 30 second night lapse and the Hero 11 produced a 5 second night lapse. The output was improved but I would have expected more like the 10.

Hey David.. I know you get a lot of questions but I really need your advice here.. I just sold my 8 and I have an 11 and 10 but I was gonna buy the mini but on the gopro website it's only $50 cheaper than the 11. With no interchangeable battery and it's intended use will be for mountain biking and ice hockey, do you think it would be worth it or should I just buy another 11 for the extra $50.. I was hoping the smaller form factor would be better for ice hockey as it would be lighter on the helmut but it sounds like sacrificing the battery swapping ability and the ease of use of the touch screen may not be worth the offset in weight.. I know I am asking you to decide what is best for me and that is ridiculous but I thought it would be $100 cheaper.. At only $50 I'm just curious if someone with real world experience with both would be able to maybe offer me something I haven't thought about... Thanks either way for the quick review..

Nice way to say David Manning is a lier for saying he got the first one without directly criticizing him about that xD
@@TheGoodContent37 We all know that the GoPro athletes are the ones who get them first.
Why can't I find any protective cases for the 11 mini ?
They don't really need them, so companies probably feel like they wouldn't sell
I have issues with the other cameras where I have to reset the battery because it fails. Though I havent used the the battery tech. Can you do a underwater temp test with the mini?
what kind of sunglasses do you have on ? pretty slick,
Hey David, how would you hook up a mic to this? The media mod obviously won't fit (unless they introduce a new one for it). I am thinking of using it as a moto vlogging camera mounted on the helmet, being lighter. But, I am concerned about battery life & mic input.
Battery life should be just fine. As for the mic input, there isn't one. So you may need to have an external mic record to a different device and then sync in post. However, I am not an audio recording expert.
@@JaredPhillips thanks but I'm aware there is no mic input, im wondering if the mic adapter (3.5mm) will work, or if there is a different accessory, or if it is just not possible?
@@MRMRS2wheeler I don't think it's possible.
@@JaredPhillips well that sucks 😔
So how do you know what you film if there is no display
It would be good to know if an external mic adaptor is available for it? You can see from my channel, I need this for motovlogging in the desert
I have the Hero Max and I am thinking about picking this up for things like rock climbing or just out and about.
Is the mini noticeably lighter when used with mouth mount? Be nice to have something lighter for surfing POV.
It's weird because in your hands, I can feel a slight difference between the 11 and the mini, but on a mount it feels much more significant of a difference
Overheating an issue? Do a test please NM you said at the end lol
On it👍
how many mini and blacks can you link together with the camera controller?
Big question is how much$? and does it allow an external mic to be attached? Love your content!
$450 or $300 if you have a GoPro subscription.
smaller lighter good for helmet cam , chin mount , wrist mount
Nailed it
Can it be used with a single microphone cable? , Do I need another sound card for microphone cable like old generation go pro cameras?
How do I change the setting easily to slo mo without using the Quik App?
how fast is this cam charging? and what is the minimum working temperature, I want to shoot a snowboarding trip
Damn those screens! Amazing to use, but for sure the achilles heel of the camera. This will be a solid rugged little device for banging around
i assume charging with power bank no issue ? and then is it unlimited run time ? cheers
Correct👍
@@DavidManningvlog cheers mate
Is mic adapter still recognize by Hero 11 mini? Can you make a video?
I would've liked to have known;
1. Camera comes in at 133g, so about 20g lighter than the full sized 11
2. All settings are programmable through the phone and it can do everything BUT photos mode
3. Quik app is solid. You still can't see while recording, but you can see a preview before hitting record to setup your shot. I'm pretty sure that's a patent issue that GoPro is facing.
4. The Quik app is actually really good about switching between controlling multiple GoPros. Just tap which one you want to change and it connects in about three seconds
BONUS: I'm not sure yet if this works with the GoPro remote, but I would imagine it does
I'm curious to use this on a motorcycle helmet. The audio will no doubt have to be a separate track.
Would be solid for a motorcycle helmet! Pretty sure the GoPro audio adapter works with this
Also I'm planning to buy gopro 11 to use with my insta360 x3.. but I am wanting to combine all my videos from both cameras into 1 ..is that do able and simple as loading SD into 1 video editing software?
I want to know how you control multiple go-pros on a single phone using the app
Mine just arrived in the mail. My first GoPro, pretty stoked to use it.
Are they planing a Media Mod for this? Can you connect a microphone?
Definitely getting one of these and it is going to live on my bike helmet forever.
Bro how do I enable gps on it I got one but idk how to use the speed stickers they just keep saying gps only please help or someone
Question, I ride SXS in the mountains of Tennessee and take videos and pics. Is this better option than using my phone?
oh hell yeah. Your phone would probably get lots of shaky footage. look up gopro footage comparisons. Good luck!
Nice unboxing!! Question: The legs can be removed? If so, what would be the weight without legs?
I'll use it mainly for FPV and would be great a few less grams
I saw 4 screws on that bottom mount so it looks like it can be removed.
No idea what weight savings you'll get, but both sets of flip down feet are removable
Thank you! that's good news! I'll be looking forward if you consider share that info in your next review!
Thanks! let see how much weight we'll be saving without those!
I was looking for a good webcam. Can the mini double as one?
Will the lens mod work with this or does it have built in horizon lock?
you do seem to have gone above and beyond - getting rained on quite spectacularly! that is some next level madness, let's hope you don't get a cold or flu after doing that craziness!!!!
This will be good on Downhill mountain bikers. Mini will side under the helmet visor and the rear finger mounts is perfect
Yeah, I think this came straight from their team riders and athletes. Seems like a lot of features that are geared towards extreme athletes
Please do a comparison 11 mini vs Go 2
thanks for not taking a huge dump on this mini like everyone else i watched 😅 I just got mine, a bit late I know.. but it makes me feel a heck of a lot better! 🙏👊
This will be perfect for use on my motorcycle helmet. The question I have is, will the GoPro Remote work with this camera?
The new GoPro remote (the same one that controls my Hero 10) works for the Mini 11. The biggest drawback for me with the Mini 11 is no hindsight mode.
What is the weight difference between the two cameras?
Nice, mine is coming tomorrow, I will be using it on my hat cam mount for Kayak fishing 🙂 Hopefully it supports running from a external power source 🤔
Sure does! I think you'll be stoked on that setup
Has a ultra wide hyperview?
Is it the first ever in the wild? I wasn't certain lol
Well I don't know about that, but did you know that this is the first on in the wild?!
Looks like a revamped and giant session.
But a session that can shoot at the same frame rates and 8:7 ration as the 11🤯
@@DavidManningvlog yeah, those parts are pretty good 😁. You did make a really good point about camera B tho. That's what I used my original session for also. Cameras are sooo good, like every day they get just a lil bit better!
Biking in Boston for years taught me one secret that I still find useful in California in the rainy season... rain pants.
Thanks for the review 🚲 I love riding in the rain! It makes me feel alive!
This is clearly a FPV drone GoPro. OR a GoPro you mount in places you know it will get scratched like under a car etc.
I need to pick up an FPV drone so I can use it for both!
GoPro: After reviewing our GoPro mini, David Manning has been quoted as saying “I need to change my underwear, I am very very wet”
Hahhaaa! Put that on the website!
Good camera, 13% smaller bla bla. Nice quick review BUT the important question is what rain jacket were you wearing? 😂😂 Seemed to keep the rain out really well! Brand and model please, need one... 😜
Outdoor research Foray II👍 LOVE that thing!
Appreciate you going in the rain.
Anything for the cause👍
Would love to have seen the pitch meeting for this and them trying to explain why it isn't exactly like the old sessions, or actually exactly like the original go pro...
Yep..a little jealous. Waiting on mine..but should arrive soon. Will be using it specifically for FPV flights. Better suited for FPV since no front screen to break and more rugged, smaller, lighter. Congrats on getting yours 1st. 🎉👍👍
Which FPV setup are you using this with?! And also, if I wanted to get into FPV, which drone would you recommend for me?
@@DavidManningvlog Honestly..pick up the DJI AVATA drone. Excellent to get started with! I’ve got a few FPVs but will be mounting it to the AVATA myself. Barriers to entry are less and less in 2022 than ever before. Hit me up if you have any questions. 👍
@@RGMGFitness i am planning on buying the avata, would you recommend me getting a DJI camera or a GoPro?
@@aryanmaheshwari2613 personally…I feel GoPro cameras are the way to go. GoPro Bones or new GoPro11 Mini. Lighter the better. 👍👍
Are the bottom tabs removable at all?
Yep!
Just got an email an hour ago that my pre-order has finally shipped with an ETA of tomorrow! I’ve been waiting for an updated Session style GoPro for years!! 🙌🥳
Stoked to start hearing what everyone thinks about this thing!
no gps for a rugged action orientated video cam? which also cannot change battery. i really want to understand the logic of making it 11% smaller but sacrificing the pretty important features you need shooting outdoor and remote areas. Unless it is only intent to be use with drones where you can obtain more power from the main battery. But however you see it this thing doesnt really fit the bill.
has anyone figured out how to change the auto power off or set quick capture on the mini? I must be missing something LOL
ok, the quick capture is on all the time it seems.
it shuts off way to fast though.
Love the dedication, out in the pouring rain, you'd fit right in here in Scotland!
I'd love to see Hero 11 Mini vs the Insta360 tiny cam (Sorry forgot the name, is it "Go 2"?). As a "which would I pick up first".
Gahhhh, would LOVE to visit Scotland! That's also a very solid idea!
@@DavidManningvlog Literally bought a house TODAY, get the keys tomorrow, so if you're ever planning a trip to Scotland, there 2 spare rooms going if needed! (come in Summer, slightly less rain). You've got to do NC500 - Tour of Scotland!
The Go2 is junk. I had nothing nut problems with it. Go for the Mini 11.
You changed to a cool and cozy-looking hoody. Where can I get one?
Can you livestream with the mini? (I guess I can look it up) 😂 I use a GoPro hero 10 to film my son’s baseball games. The camera doesn’t like filming in 100° weather. I’m wondering if this new GoPro can withstand heat better. Thank you for all your videos.
We record a lot of hockey with Gopro so looking at this one because of the smaller size, thanks for this review
Same! Got mine yesterday, dialed in the settings and took some test clips. Threw it on the charge so it'd be ready for hockey this morning. It's bricked. Solid red light, doesn't respond to anything. Unfortunate.
Hey David, I'm a large! Anyway, thought it was worth a shot. Plenty of uses for a mini in event videography, on the alter at a wedding, on the band, at the bride's table, etc. Also, I do a lot of miniature railroad stuff and this little camera will fit nicely on a gondola to be pushed around the layout. Lots of uses come to mind. And, it never rains in Southern California!
Great job on the video David! Thanks for making it.
Another weird question. What’s the name of your hoddie you wearing? I mean where can I buy it ? 😜
Fuzzy hoodie is a ripcurl fleece and the orange jacket is the outdoor research foray👍
Is the GoPrp Hero11 300 dpi?
What happened to GoPro? MISS the little GoPro Session
No hindsight?
Dude may i ask where you got that hooded fleece😂? Looks so nice!
