To all the kids writing essays - a few things to talk about:
- intertextuality. She quotes and invokes MANY other writers and speakers including; Lin Manuel Miranda (Hamilton), Maya Angelou (Still I Rise), MLK (I Have A Dream, when she lists the areas of the country). This contributes to the feeling of anchored, unified optimism in the poem.
- collective nouns. She constantly uses “we”, “our” and “us”. She is speaking to, and for, ALL of us, not just for herself. No ‘I’ in this poem.
- the style of writing and performance feels fresh and current, but it is actually rooted in the most ancient form of literature there is, bardic poetry. She uses methods like alliteration, assonance, internal rhyme, metaphor and a musical delivery. These are all things found in ancient poems like Gawain and the Green Knight and Beowulf. These were stories made to be performed, not read. The purpose was to entertain, but also to unify people around a communal sense of identity and heritage. She is tapping into something very old and deep inside all of us.
Hope that was useful!
From a geeky English teacher :)
THANK YOU SO MUCH
thank you lol
Very helpful and insightful, but I just wanted to know what you mean by "most ancient form of literature there is". The Epic of Gilgamesh is the oldest known epic. If you mean in poetry (if that's the appropriate word to use), I'm sure there's African, Asian, or even other European based forms of literature that are older. I'm not as informed as you are which is likely why I'm so confused.
“We”, “Us”, “Our” etc. are not collective nouns, they are personal pronouns.
Thank youuuu

I don't know what's more impressive, the fact that at only 22 years old, she's speaking at the president's inauguration and killing it, or the seriousness of her poem. This is a good thing.
hmmmm, 22 is not all that young, college graduate age already...the way everyone's been talking I thought she was like 17 or something. I can remember the seriousness of the 10- minute-straight rap masterpiece I wrote about the whole history and current state of affairs of the African diaspora at that age (before I knew about breaking things down into reasonably sized verses and choruses lol). Was super deep, but much more, ummm, let's say anti-status quo and far less patriotic. They would've cut the cameras if I recited it at a presidential inauguration, LMAO.
Am curious to see what this young woman has to say in her previous (and future) poems though, when she doesn't have to try to make her message palatable to everyone. Definitely very talented!

bars
"The Hill We Climb"
When day comes we ask ourselves,
where can we find light in this never-ending shade?
The loss we carry,
a sea we must wade
We've braved the belly of the beast
We've learned that quiet isn't always peace
And the norms and notions
of what just is
Isn’t always just-ice
And yet the dawn is ours
before we knew it
Somehow we do it
Somehow we've weathered and witnessed
a nation that isn’t broken
but simply unfinished
We the successors of a country and a time
Where a skinny Black girl
descended from slaves and raised by a single mother
can dream of becoming president
only to find herself reciting for one
And yes we are far from polished
far from pristine
but that doesn’t mean we are
striving to form a union that is perfect
We are striving to forge a union with purpose
To compose a country committed to all cultures, colors, characters and
conditions of man
And so we lift our gazes not to what stands between us
but what stands before us
We close the divide because we know, to put our future first,
we must first put our differences aside
We lay down our arms
so we can reach out our arms
to one another
We seek harm to none and harmony for all
Let the globe, if nothing else, say this is true:
That even as we grieved, we grew
That even as we hurt, we hoped
That even as we tired, we tried
That we’ll forever be tied together, victorious
Not because we will never again know defeat
but because we will never again sow division
Scripture tells us to envision
that everyone shall sit under their own vine and fig tree
And no one shall make them afraid
If we’re to live up to our own time
Then victory won’t lie in the blade
But in all the bridges we’ve made
That is the promise to glade
The hill we climb
If only we dare
It's because being American is more than a pride we inherit,
it’s the past we step into
and how we repair it
We’ve seen a force that would shatter our nation
rather than share it
Would destroy our country if it meant delaying democracy
And this effort very nearly succeeded
But while democracy can be periodically delayed
it can never be permanently defeated
In this truth
in this faith we trust
For while we have our eyes on the future
history has its eyes on us
This is the era of just redemption
We feared at its inception
We did not feel prepared to be the heirs
of such a terrifying hour
but within it we found the power
to author a new chapter
To offer hope and laughter to ourselves
So while once we asked,
how could we possibly prevail over catastrophe?
Now we assert
How could catastrophe possibly prevail over us?
We will not march back to what was
but move to what shall be
A country that is bruised but whole,
benevolent but bold,
fierce and free
We will not be turned around
or interrupted by intimidation
because we know our inaction and inertia
will be the inheritance of the next generation
Our blunders become their burdens
But one thing is certain:
If we merge mercy with might,
and might with right,
then love becomes our legacy
and change our children’s birthright
So let us leave behind a country
better than the one we were left with
Every breath from my bronze-pounded chest,
we will raise this wounded world into a wondrous one
We will rise from the gold-limbed hills of the west,
we will rise from the windswept northeast
where our forefathers first realized revolution
We will rise from the lake-rimmed cities of the midwestern states,
we will rise from the sunbaked south
We will rebuild, reconcile and recover
and every known nook of our nation and
every corner called our country,
our people diverse and beautiful will emerge,
battered and beautiful
When day comes we step out of the shade,
aflame and unafraid
The new dawn blooms as we free it
For there is always light,
if only we’re brave enough to see it
If only we’re brave enough to be it

If we’re to live up to her own time, then victory won’t lie in the blade, but in all the bridges we’ve made.

Late but yeah pretty much
I don’t feel qualified to make comment on this poem. Let just say that I am a 53 year old white man from the other side of the world (New Zealand), and the power of these words isn’t lost on me. They brought a tear to my eyes and fill me with hope. What an amazing person she is.
I'm a Kiwi also, a Pakeha. And this is just so inspiring.

@King Ghidorah yes lol Thank u tho
@King Ghidorah help me the question is
Identify lines in the poem that reflect the occasion for which “The Hill We Climb” was written. How do the lines you have chosen suggest issues surrounding the inauguration of a president in 2021?
It has to be around 500 words
I have nothing written down
I never thought I tear up at the reciting of a poem but man oh man this hit me hard. ABSOLUTELY SPECTACULAR. AMAZING

YES!!!!! I began to tear and weep in disbelief and hope. The light she beamed was beyond stunning.

There's no evidence to support it.
UGH SAME!!!
"The Hill We Climb"
When day comes we ask ourselves,
where can we find light in this never-ending shade?
The loss we carry,
a sea we must wade
We've braved the belly of the beast
We've learned that quiet isn't always peace
And the norms and notions
of what just is
Isn’t always just-ice
And yet the dawn is ours
before we knew it
Somehow we do it
Somehow we've weathered and witnessed
a nation that isn’t broken
but simply unfinished
We the successors of a country and a time
Where a skinny Black girl
descended from slaves and raised by a single mother
can dream of becoming president
only to find herself reciting for one
And yes we are far from polished
far from pristine
but that doesn’t mean we are
striving to form a union that is perfect
We are striving to forge a union with purpose
To compose a country committed to all cultures, colors, characters and
conditions of man
And so we lift our gazes not to what stands between us
but what stands before us
We close the divide because we know, to put our future first,
we must first put our differences aside
We lay down our arms
so we can reach out our arms
to one another
We seek harm to none and harmony for all
Let the globe, if nothing else, say this is true:
That even as we grieved, we grew
That even as we hurt, we hoped
That even as we tired, we tried
That we’ll forever be tied together, victorious
Not because we will never again know defeat
but because we will never again sow division
Scripture tells us to envision
that everyone shall sit under their own vine and fig tree
And no one shall make them afraid
If we’re to live up to our own time
Then victory won’t lie in the blade
But in all the bridges we’ve made
That is the promise to glade
The hill we climb
If only we dare
It's because being American is more than a pride we inherit,
it’s the past we step into
and how we repair it
We’ve seen a force that would shatter our nation
rather than share it
Would destroy our country if it meant delaying democracy
And this effort very nearly succeeded
But while democracy can be periodically delayed
it can never be permanently defeated
In this truth
in this faith we trust
For while we have our eyes on the future
history has its eyes on us
This is the era of just redemption
We feared at its inception
We did not feel prepared to be the heirs
of such a terrifying hour
but within it we found the power
to author a new chapter
To offer hope and laughter to ourselves
So while once we asked,
how could we possibly prevail over catastrophe?
Now we assert
How could catastrophe possibly prevail over us?
We will not march back to what was
but move to what shall be
A country that is bruised but whole,
benevolent but bold,
fierce and free
We will not be turned around
or interrupted by intimidation
because we know our inaction and inertia
will be the inheritance of the next generation
Our blunders become their burdens
But one thing is certain:
If we merge mercy with might,
and might with right,
then love becomes our legacy
and change our children’s birthright
So let us leave behind a country
better than the one we were left with
Every breath from my bronze-pounded chest,
we will raise this wounded world into a wondrous one
We will rise from the gold-limbed hills of the west,
we will rise from the windswept northeast
where our forefathers first realized revolution
We will rise from the lake-rimmed cities of the midwestern states,
we will rise from the sunbaked south
We will rebuild, reconcile and recover
and every known nook of our nation and
every corner called our country,
our people diverse and beautiful will emerge,
battered and beautiful
When day comes we step out of the shade,
aflame and unafraid
The new dawn blooms as we free it
For there is always light,
if only we’re brave enough to see it
If only we’re brave enough to be it

She was, as we say, "raised right"!
Yes. Attending Harvard certainly served her well. BTW - she is a twin!

@QUEEN CLEO you are the problem in this country. There was nothing confrontational about my comment, but of course you reply with a lame ass remark about Trump. Obviously you didn't hear a word that Amanda said.
She went to a private school, recieved numerous scholarships and graduated from Harvard and still her entire poem is structured around a binary victim and oppresor narrative. How tragic that even one as unbelievably privileged as she chooses to portray her country as unequally flawed and herself as a victim.

As an artist, I genuinely wish for more artists and people like her to be in positions of power, or at least have a seat at the table. I know so many highly intelligent artists that lead from the heart and think so uniquely that they would add so much light, wisdom and fresh forward thinking to a government. Artists aren’t made the most of in our culture.

Agreed. Nice post 👍🏼
You want people who "lead from heart". Logic and reason is the only way to determine what is best, not emotion.
@@mikelmazlaghani487 Logic and emotions aren't mutually exclusive; in fact, much of human rationale stems from our innate desires and beliefs of what makes us human and able to think. There is an interlinked duality between the two.

The more you replay this, the more valuable the message it carries. America can be extremely proud of her.
@Harald Harster No. She isn't just talking about the president, she is talking about how the world is changing and how we as Americans need to look at the past and acknowledge the mistakes we have done by then fixing them. Joe Biden is only mentioned one time throughout the entire poem.
@Harald Harster But she wrote these words herself. She knows that America is far from perfect, and many great white people have made extraordinary discoveries. But what you need to understand is that white people aren't always the heroes painted on the portrait. Fortunately, we all are moving on from that. That is what she is trying to say.
THAT IS A BUNCH OF MUMBO JUMBO AND YOU KNOW IT FRED
I watched this live on TV last night in Singapore. Amanda's poem was my favourite bit. Just wonderful and uplifting!
“Some of us would rather shatter America before they would share it” Amanda
United, this country stands. Divided, this country falls. America will be consumed by it's enemies abroad and this nation will be wiped off the planet!
Analysis of “The hill we climb” - Amanda Gorman.
Summary
“The Hill We Climb”, is an inauguration poem recited on January 6th, 2021 by the 22-year-old Amanda Gorman. In the poem, she speaks upon a lot of the ongoing problems in America. Also, what it really means to be an American. In front of millions of people, she stood up and highlighted some of the problems in which America has been through and is eventually going to meet. How we have become more divided, and how there should be a place for everyone. How we should strive for a more united nation, she also mentions chooses to mention racism here and there. To sum it all up in one sentence: “But that doesn't mean we are striving to form a union that is perfect. We are striving to forge a union with purpose.”
Analytical poem
“But while democracy can be periodically delayed it can never be permanently defeated.”
Here she is talking about how Joe Biden was declared the winner of the 2020 presidential race, and Donald Trump not wanting to accept the results of the election. He suggested postponing the election and have reelection since he thought that that increased postal voting could essentially lead to fraud and inaccurate results. The sentence was also a direct message to the violent mob that attacked Congress not too long ago. This all happened because of Donald Trump, telling his supports they should fight like hell if they want to win “their” country back. She was basically telling all the angry Trump supporters: No matter what you do, democracy will always prevail.
“To compose a country committed to all cultures, colors, characters, and conditions of man.”
In her poem, she chooses to put some focus on racism, and she even mentions it a few times. This is, to say the least, a very controversial topic, however, it is something that deserves attention and to is pointed out since a lot of the racism also comes from the US government. Also, a lot of African Americans still believe they are being suppressed so it is a good way to appeal to a bigger audience. She also mentions herself as an example, maybe for pointing out how much the US has changed. And that for maybe only 40 years ago she would not have been allowed to be reciting for the US president because of her skin color.
“We must first put our differences aside.” America has the most ethnicities in the world; however, Americans are also getting more divided. This also goes economically wise, because while the rich people are getting richer, the poor people, on the other hand, are getting left behind in a struggling society. She chose to not talk about climate change and such because this poem was more directed at the people. I also think she chose not to include it since Joe Bidden already has a lot, no reason to beat a dead horse.
“We will rebuild, reconcile and recover.” It means that America is in a need of a change if they ever wish to develop as a people and a nation. To reconcile the people and rebuild the country as well as rethink their priorities.
Examples of alliterations:
She says “we” a lot of times, actually, more than 8% of her entire speech is the word “we”. She also mentions “We will” 10 times. You can really hear how she tries to push out the idea that we are all in this together. Every time she refers to the American people it is by saying “We”. This also adds to her pathos, making it sound like they are all in this together.
To conclude, I think that Amanda succeeded in getting her message across in the right way. First of all because of the right methods she used to deliver her poem. She utilized the right techniques/words correctly and talked politically well too. Nothing sounded too off, and all in all I really liked it. If I had to critique the poem it would have to be, I do not like how she mentions her past. It is interesting nonetheless that does not make it relevant.
Ps. Here is my assignment I wrote this myself yesterday, it's 100% Original so don't worry. For all the people that need help, I got you. Love you all. Please don't copyright this comment took me hours to make

I was thinking while she was reciting about how much light she exudes and then she ended with "there is always light".
I typically never leave comments but this young woman is soooo incredible! Her for site, her depth and passion! Just incredible. Gave me chills. Bless her!
