Today’s video was another request via Instagram: How do you stay motivated in building a private practice when you don’t have any therapy clients yet?
Love this question! It’s so relatable. I think most of us start out with a ton of motivation when we first decide to launch into private practice, and then we hit some hiccup and suddenly weeks pass since we did anything related to building our practice. Especially if you’d hoped to have more counseling clients by now.
So in this video, I share some tools to help you stay motivated when you are waiting for clients to find your practice.

Thank you Marie! I just moved from a Los Altos office to a new city an hour away and am working at re-building my practice. Your videos are so helpful to keep me motivated to stay at it! I really appreciate all the hard work you put into Private Practice Skills! Thanks again.

Thank you so much for these videos! While I am currently pursuing a counseling degree, I have compiled an entire playlist of your videos ready to go for that day! I especially love your reaction videos and all the personal experiences lessons you include, thanks :)

I can attest to Dr. Fang's tips AND her awesome website building course. Another great tip I heard recently is to use the hours you WOULD be spending with clients on marketing. So, if you're trying to build to 20 clients but your caseload only contains 15, protect those extra hours on your schedule and use them for your marketing strategy.

Every therapist's first caseload is zero. I started my practice in Aug '18, didn't get my first client until March '20.

How are you marketing? Are you cash pay only? I am in the midst of starting my own PP. I am waiting for the S-Corp to go thru.

@@kaleimaile I'm on 4 different insurance panels. I started with 1 and my first guy was self pay (he had high deductible and my self pay rate was cheaper). I market through my website, PsychologyToday and belong to several Facebook groups for referrals and networking.

@@gocubs1815 , thanks! I am currently working for a group, but don’t want to be on panels anymore b/c I already got audited once and it wasn’t fun.
Are you seeing a lot of traction on your PT?

Amazing tips! I’m in grad school and have the end goal of private practice in mind :) I have a video idea or a general question! How would you write your About page on your site prior to graduating and licensure?

What I have found helpful is to focus on what you can bring to your client or what kind of change you can help them make. This goes back to Marie‘s point of spending a lot of time thinking about purpose. While clients do appreciate knowing your background of experience, they are more interested in themselves. A great book to help with this is “Building a Storybrand” by Donald Miller

@@mariepettit2632 I mean how to write it that you’re still in grad school and not able to take clients but also wanting to get your name out there
