I just updated to a '05 Rev so in this video, I'll talk about the sled I bought, and some of the things to think about if your deciding whether to upgrade. Have you updated to something newer recently?
My Old Sled I updated to a switchback assault 800 than went back to a 96 mxz 583 I put over 2,000 trouble free miles on this sled after it was used for 20 years I couldn’t even put 200 miles without constant issues with that 800. because new sleds are not reliable they break down constantly and cost so much more to repair the only thing better about the Switchback assault is that it handled better and had more power the rest of the sled was complete junk and an absolute money pit new sleds are garbage.
@@mjberta7319 Hi matt, I'm very familiar with Royal. Its great for certain popular items and 3rd party products, but there are lots of OEM and Replacement parts for an older sled you can't find there.
@@MyOldSled I live in Alberta myself, ride both a 03 summit Highmark and a 08 m8 Sno pro finding the right distributer is often hard but I have found that certain dealerships only are able to go back 8 years and some use a different software that allows them to go back even farther that's how I have been finding parts for my summit

One thing that greatly improves your 97 is a handle bar riser. You kept talking about the ergonomics of the newer sled, I have had two sleds on the s and f skidoo chassis and the difference that a 2 inch rise made was incredible. Its a lot more comfortable to be kneeling and feels less like your going to go over the bars, and it gives a bit more leverage for getting the sled around. It’s 4 bolts and 20 mins. I would definitely recommend trying one out, could even make an interesting video.
Hi ML. A riser would make it easier to reach the bars standing up, but I’m afraid that still wouldn’t make it a REV. My 97 is what it is, a nice heavy old comfortable sled to trail ride on. I prefer to keep it stock. The dash isn’t designed for risers, so you end up with a big ugly hole. Its not just the riser, literally everything about the newer sled is redesigned.
Well I was one of those guys buying new every few years and can afford a new 2020... but my interest has shifted drastically. I've gone backwards to what I used to ride and buy new 20+ years ago, triple triples...a few of them!! Yes the crappy ride and weight is brutal compared to new iron but the few and shorter rides I do now on groomed trails or the lake they do just fine. I love riding them and they sound like nothing else, puts a smile on my face every time and easy to work on.

Aside from comfort, and ride position, the newer sleds don't have that many advantages. I personally believe that many of the older machines are more reliable than the newer computer controlled sleds... I'm upgrading from a 99 Yamaha, but it's solely because I want a longer track, reverse, and less weight. I'm not as concerned with year, as I am with how it was maintained....
I maintain myself, only way to be sure of it. Go over everything, compression test as well as a leakdown test as well. Open up chain case, r and r clutches ect ect. I am will you on the old stuff but they do make fan cooled carb sleds new, look at the vk 540 the most sold sled in the world. very popular in Russia for a reason.
@Austin Becker I upgraded from a 2001 MXZ 600 to a 2012 renegade 800 etec x package 3 years ago. I still own the 2001 sled, which, has never let me down - still starts 1-2pulls every single time - 3500 miles. I bought the newer sled with 2,300 miles on it, 2-300miles after the previous owner had the piston recall done on it. I paid $6,500 dollars for it, which was a lot for me. I rode the sled for a full season with no issues. 2nd ride of the second season of owning it, the (oil less) crank bearing had a catastrophic failure leaving me with a $6500 dollar paperweight. Engine completely grenaded and no portion of the motor can even be used as cores. It would be utterly foolish to spend $3k on a new/rebuilt engine. Good trustworthy engine rebuilders are becoming harder and harder to find these days, to the point where I wouldn’t trust any of them. All that said - I am absolutely done with newer style sleds. Done. Between the propriety budds software equipment needed to work on practically anything on these sleds, then an engine compartment that’s too small for my 2yearold to even work on, the riding improvement they offer doesn’t even begin to justify the simplicity and workability of the older sleds. Done. I since have put the 2012 137 skid into my 2001, extended the tunnel, and replaced every moving component of the front suspension and steering. As the gentleman mentions in the video, a lot of the old sleds ride like crap because, well, they’re old and need parts suspension/drive train components refreshed. My old reliable sled now rides better than ever, and I can practically rebuild or replace any portion of the sled with my eyes closed.
Thanks for the videos, I'm trying to get back into the hobby after a 10 years or so. My old sled is a 98 summit 670x, very similar to your mxz. I've forgotten so much thanks for all of the reminders!
I really like my 97 Polaris Indy 600 for trail riding but I found myself wanting to go off trail a lot more and I can carve it pretty good but I found it super uncomfortable so yeah hopefully I can get a newer sled
Last year I replace my 97 XLT with a 14 Pro-RMK. Out of the many improvements the best by a long shot was the suspension, my back will thank me when I’m older. When I bought it 10 years ago it still had decent power and suspension, but the 600 has the same HP as the old 700s, and weighs less. I couldn’t ever go back, and I loved that XLT! I’ll probably keep the XLT around to loan out and for towing sled loads of wood.
Been browsing your channel time to time since returning to Maine. Came across this video and got a good grin. reminded me of huffing and puffing working on Drone video edits and other RC stuff. Just found your channel and I already love it. Since I was a kid I was riding my dads older mxz600 and formula 583. But just bought a 05 mxz600sdi and I'm inching for some snow!
Ive enjoyed watching because of the 97 mxz, im 38 so that thing was primo when i was 16 dreaming about the sno-goer centerfolds on my wall! It amazes me on how great of shape you have kept it.
Like you said, if people would keep up on the basic maintenance, keep it on its skis and out of the trees. Ive seen those 670s put on 30,000km no problem.

Another great video and subject matter, Watching this one brought back a few memories, Yes thing's sure have changed over the year's, doesn't seem that long ago i also had a 97 S chassis 583, pulling it over was a bear. I dreamed of having electric start, and moved up to a 2007 Blizzard SDI, i was in my glory, after riding that for a few year's i moved up to latest a 2016 MXZX Renegade 800 R E Tec, The R Motion was a major point in the purchase, this year was the first time i was never sore after a long Day and 250 klm ride, They continue to come out with better and better stuff, but now i'm content with this newer technology

Hi Dave ! Love your videos ! I just upgraded from a 1999 fomula 583 to a 2011 summit. One thing you forgot to mention is that you have to get a sled that suits your riding. I used to fight going in deep snow and now the 163" made it a breeze ! Cheers from quebec !
Great video Dave. Really like your new sled, I'm looking at getting a mid 2000s 600 next year as well. E-start and reverse are high on my want list. Love my 98 MXZ 500 but after suffering a herniated disc last year, pull starting and moving a 500 lb sled isn't as easy though I don't think I could ever let the 500 go. Always good to have a 2nd anyway lol.
Whoa, that was rough. I'd suggest you never stand with one knee on the seat unless you are stopped. Off the line difference in the two is due to clutch differences. The old MXZ does not engage at 3000rpm like the newer unit. That old 670 is a monster. They actually had sanction racing classes based on this engine.Perhaps the Formula SS and Mach Z's were more power. Some had duel exh. Pipes. I.e. if you know how to ride, that is one fast ass sled. PS: needing to feed primer while earming up is a sure sign your carbs pilot jets need cleared out. That will also hinder your take offs.
Hi LO. Sorry but that is inaccurate. A couple of shots on the primer on a cold day, even with a freshly cleaned carb, is completely normal, just like leaving a choke on until its warm. Once its warm, it runs and idles fine. The semi kneeling position is often part of snowmobile safety training, it is useful when you need to see farther ahead, hills or other off trail riding. The sled should be operated at reduced speeds when using this position. You’re right though it’s a fast sled. Thanks for watching.
Hi Lotus. Sorry, forgot to mention, assuming no modifications, the clutch engagement on both machines should occur around 3800 RPM. The shop manuals are pretty easy to find and are really useful. Great video, Dave. There’s something to be said about the fact that ZX chassis’ are selling for the same, if not more, than REV chassis machines.... don’t get rid of your old sled due to technology improvements. There’s so much that can be done to the older sleds that you just can’t do to the newer ones (cost wise, especially). For example: simply swapping out rear skids can make a world of difference, same goes for front suspension. Risers are incredibly affordable and aftermarket seat options can shed tons of weight off. Many of the parts on the newer sleds can actually be used on the older ones without modification. I’ve just wrapped up a ZX chassis build with a stock REV 6” riser, stock REV tail light assembly with cargo rack, stock REV SC4 rear skid, and an aftermarket seat from SKINZ (which weighs 7lbs). Things to consider before giving up on the older sleds. Either way, though...as long as you’re out riding, it’s a good day!
Hi Matt, I get what you're saying ....In terms of re-sale, the same is true of the S-chassis sleds and IMHO its nuts. What people are asking for 20+ year old sleds is insane. I would never pay over 2K (Canadian) for a 2000 or older, no matter what condition. You are right about swapping out rear skids, but I would question the ability to upgrade a swing arm set up to an A-Arm suspension. The motor in the 600 will never perform anywhere near the same as the Rev. Risers are affordable, and they do address the height of the handlebar, but for me, the remainder of the sled is designed to be ridden seated, and you are left with a big hole in the dash. I'm not a big fan of mods, I'd rather buy a sled designed with the features I'm looking for. That said, for those who have fun modding and running a Frankensled, I'm in no way putting them down, it's a GREAT hobby. Just not my thing. (Although...the rear skid is worth looking at....) Thanks for the comment. All great points to make, and definitely something to think about in relation to hanging on to an older sled. I'm planning to keep both for now.
@@MyOldSled You can't change the trailing arm suspension to double A arm without some serious fabrication, but you can change the spring and shock setup for better handling. The REV riser looks and feels like it was meant to be there from the start (I dont know about holes in dashes). The SC-4 skid slides right in where the SC-10 used to be and it rides like a dream. I'd invite you to check it out when I'm heading up that way. This weekend we're sledding on Rice Lake....
Over the years I've found that with various things. Even computers. You can put in more ram, buy faster processors...but the board and other architecture are still old. Always better to just buy the newer platform. I've said in a couple of threads, I don't knock anyone who's having fun modding their sled, but my preference is to buy a sled with the feature I want.
I’ve been saving to purchase a sled for the upcoming winter 2020, and am between an older Zr550,mxz, vs a rev! So this video did not directly help, but did give me good important information to help me decide! And a great vid to explain to my mom the differences😝

Great video Dave. Huge difference between my 91 and my 02...obviously. I agree that it doesn't take much to keep the 90's sleds in good shape and sometimes a little easier to work on (simpler). But every year those newer sleds look more and more appealing and you can find some sweet deals this time of year for sleds that are new or only a couple years old.
I love my 1997 jag 440 I don’t go on big rides last year I only put on 100 or so km and there’s 4300 on her! But I’m keeping it for the rest of my life be great for around the farm in winter and I only paid $1500 for it with around 4000km
I don't blame you for keeping it. What you're saying totally resonates with me. I paid $1500 for my old 670 and if I had to sell one tomorrow .... hmmm...I still don't know which one I'd sell :)
rev chassis is so much more comfortable but the s2000 chassis looks so much better and the 670 is probably faster than the 600. thats a nice 97 you have! 😍😍
Wow nice new sled i want to upgrade eventually but not for a while im 13 and just got into snowmobiling and own a vintage 1984 yamaha srv 540 flinstone snowmobile i like it for an old sled like it is. Easy maintenance and reliable lol way better than my old 86 indy 400
Great video! I have 2 2002 ZX chassis (500 legend fan and 500 grand touring fan). this is my first year sledding. I rented a 2019 skidoo Grand Touring in Colorado and it was night and day difference with the suspension! I am waiting for the snow to melt and find a Rev chassis EFI. Love the channel man!
Just for reference, the REV uses some of the same suspension components, a similar skid, and the same clutch as the ZX chassis sleds...Big difference is the riding position.
Hi Austin, My 97 is an S-chassis, the ZX was introduced in 99, but in terms of rear suspension, no major design changes, the biggest change is the front suspension. The riding position is definitely one of the big visible changes. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Brother has an 98 600 mxz. And i got a 05 renegade. In my opinion they are both great in different ways wold ride either but did like the longer track.
Got a friend with a 09 summit. Its really nice but he can't disconnect anything electronically without have to be taken to the dealer to have the computer flashed so it will run again. I just rebuilt the top end of my 99 yamaha with a performance balance kit from Wiseco. Took the better part of a day in labour but its up and running just fine. Was very easy to DIY. I don't think I would attempt to fix anything newer then 2005 myself. Right around the time they changed to the Rider forward position sleds got more complicated to fix on your own. But thats how the dealers want them. I had a guy come into the store and purchase electrical contact cleaner to maybe fix his handle bar safety switch on a new sled. If your not gripping the handle bars your sled won't go. Why is it more often then not its all the tech crap they are adding to new stuff that is the stuff thats breaking causing the issues.
I hear you. It's the same with cars. I gave up working on my own cars a long time ago. Personally, I don't think it's ethical to create a situation where people must go to a dealer, and it does seem sometimes that is the situation, especially when the software you need is proprietary. A lot of newer machines require specialized tools. Hopefully by the time those sleds are older, those tools will be available to the consumer market.
Even if I had the money I wouldn't upgrade. My 1971 ski whiz is bucketloads of fun in even the worst storms North Dakota can throw at me. Nice video though. Good and informative.
670 not having the nikasil jugs is a plus.My 98 has 8500 miles with all original other than a set of pistons rings and oil pump gear.I finally bought an 05 800x and have had to replace the nun and the crankshaft pistons and jugs.Yeah its a way better ride but the durability and reliability aren't even close between the 2 in my opinion
I love the mechanical aspect of my old 98 Formula 500 but unfortunately it’s almost unrideable when the trails get washboarded because I am just too tall to stand up or kneel so it absolutely kills the neck and back. I wish I could just upgrade the ride ability portion and keep the carbs and mechanicals as is.

Great video Dave. I’m in the same boat as you. My first (old) sled is a 00 ZL600. New clutch right after I bought it. Picked up a second sled that is a 08 F6. What a difference 6 years makes. What kind of mileage do you get with Gas and Oil on the Rev?
Haven’t had it long enough to comment. After the season I need to pull it apart, check and adjust the oil pump, clean raves etc. Then I’ll have a better idea.
Hey Dave,what did you pay if you dont mind me asking for yer latest sled? i found one like yers for my wife..and i was wondering if im getting a good deal,,i know it depends on the shape,,etc..but this guys says his sleds valued at $3000 its a 2005 skidoo mxz adrenaline 600ho mileage is only 2300km sleds like new
583 and 670 engines were some of the best engines made and in radar runs and drags they always were 1st and 2nd place.. The 99 ho 670s were sleepers. They would eat up a lot of triples in the drags!
Larry W Ya buddy had one 670 . We swapped here and there for fun . I had an XLT special . I never wanted to swap back lol Felt like leaving an airplane and getting back in my tank lol
I have a 2018 mountain sled but have been looking at getting an shorter older model for ditch banging and running across the lake and trails...been looking at a 670 summit.
PS: The first gen Rev was nice, but the whole shock tower nun can was a mess. I have pounded on many, trying to get the sled squared up and back straight. Not easy. That old sled may outlive the 2005-6 models.
That structural cross member (nun) is definitely susceptible to impact...I try not hit anything. ;) I agree the old sled is built to last. Still starts every time. Thats why I haven’t sold it.
There is way less to go wrong on the older sled your 05 is way more likely to break down than your 97 because there’s way more parts to fail. And if the 97 breaks down it’s so simple to fix that anybody could do it old sleds are more reliable and last longer you can fix them on the side of the trail and keep going 90 percent of the time. The 90’s sleds are built way better than the new ones this is coming from a guy that owned both.
My Old Sled I’m loving it! It took me a little to get used to the rider forward seating, but my back feels much better after long rides. Happy sledding!

Hi Spencer. No, it doesn’t. If I were hill climbing, racing etc I might, but the odds are pretty good I won’t run my sled into anything immmovable. I might if I have a slow week and the sleds apart, but it’s not high on my list.
dude you need to buy the upgraded fly wheel I have the 05sdi to and the flywheel blew up because the magnet shredded and yeah it sucked heads up though its about 900 dollars it sucks. but hey great video!!
I have an 03 800 sport. Added beavertail delete so could add linQ etra fuel tank. Only problem with sled its a fuel🐖🐖🐖.runs great tho. Wonder what would take to upgrade to the fuel injected?
I can't see it being practical, or worth the cost and effort. Assuming the jugs and crank are the same, you'd need a stator, different fuel pump, computer (ECM), throttle body, injectors, O2 sensor, exhaust gas temperature sensor, throttle position sensor etc...I imagine the oil pump is different, I'm assuming the jugs are different to accommodate the injectors in the transfer port...thats just off the top of my head...I'm sure it would make more sense to sell your sled and buy an SDI.

I knew nothing about it.after 3 or 4 runs.people were coming over to look at it. It did very well. I can ride 45-50 miles.full tank + the 3 gallons i cary on back. Im empty. How far ur 05 go?
I bought a rev also this year. I find myself on my pantera 1000 more. Guess i just dont like being up so high and tipsy. Something i just dont like about it.
I should also mention depends on the riding also. Would definitely want my rev in the back woods style riding and the recliner on the trails. Guess im just getting old haha. Find myself enjoying the ride and scenery more as time goes on. I enjoy your videos keep up the good work!
Not all the old sleds are heavier, my 91 phazer is way light than my 03 rev 800. Rider forward is a huge improvement tho making the jump to a rev was mindbogglingly better. The older sleds were butt bangners lol.

Sorry, not sure what you mean do you mean a copy of Go Snowmobiling magazine? If so, you get it if you buy a trail permit. You could look on the OFSC website, not sure if they sell old copies.
Ah I see, I ride off trail and have a couple miles of private trail as well as lake simcoe to ride so I dont get a trail permit. I thought I seen copys somewhere but I guess it was another magazine.@@MyOldSled
Yes they are pretty darn expensive. In December my dad finally picked up his 2019 backcountry country xrs. Had a dealership set it all up and we’ve been there for a long time. 15678$.
Upgrades in sled technology go fast. Getting off my 1969 ski daddler and riding my 1971 ski whiz brings a huge difference in the comfort and control. Then getting off my 1971 ski whz and onto my 1979 john deere trailfire i feel another huge difference. Then going up to the 1993 polaris indy lite is the same difference again.
Sorry wolf, never done it. I imagine it would, as long as it fits, including the exhaust, and the cutches align properly. You might have to weld some mounts. There must be an arctic cat forum where someone has done it, but it doesn’t seem too hard.
1:14 Dave just said Z like an American haha I always thought Canada and the UK said the letter Z like "ZED" or "ZET" I'm sure the way I say it is wrong though (I'm American) and I say the letter Z like "ZEE" oh well haha
Thanks for noticing, that was not easy :) technically Canada follows the British pronounciation, “zed”. Typically my friends in the United States say “zee.” Most of the time I try and say both, but this time I thought I’d change it up for you guys.

I find new sleds less involved, I love riding 80s sleds because you can drift everywhere and just lay the power down all the time, I really dont see the appeal of modern snowmobiles with that forward position, you sort of just understeer everywhere, no drifting or power sliding is even possible
A lot of it depends on the type of riding you do. I was out on the older sled today and had a lot of fun with it. Its definitely a different type of riding. I'm personally not into drifting, but you're basically using throttle and steering to keep a vehicle in a constant state of oversteering with your back end sliding around corners...You can do that in either sled, (as long as your track isn't studded) though the lower, wider stance of the 670 makes it more comfortable. A soon as you hit deeper snow, drifts, or trying to pull the sled over, you see the appeal of the newer chassis designs really quick. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
I had the 670 back in the day still was one of my favorites. It definitely kicked most sleds butts back then.

I personally believe that many of the older machines are more reliable than the newer computer controlled sleds... I'm upgrading from a 99 Yamaha, but it's solely because I want a longer track, reverse, and less weight. I'm not as concerned with year, as I am with how it was maintained....
I maintain myself, only way to be sure of it. Go over everything, compression test as well as a leakdown test as well. Open up chain case, r and r clutches ect ect. I am will you on the old stuff but they do make fan cooled carb sleds new, look at the vk 540 the most sold sled in the world. very popular in Russia for a reason.
If there was a new chassis Yamaha with the old 700 triple, that would be a legendary sled.

I upgraded from a 2001 MXZ 600 to a 2012 renegade 800 etec x package 3 years ago. I still own the 2001 sled, which, has never let me down - still starts 1-2pulls every single time - 3500 miles. I bought the newer sled with 2,300 miles on it, 2-300miles after the previous owner had the piston recall done on it. I paid $6,500 dollars for it, which was a lot for me. I rode the sled for a full season with no issues. 2nd ride of the second season of owning it, the (oil less) crank bearing had a catastrophic failure leaving me with a $6500 dollar paperweight. Engine completely grenaded and no portion of the motor can even be used as cores. It would be utterly foolish to spend $3k on a new/rebuilt engine. Good trustworthy engine rebuilders are becoming harder and harder to find these days, to the point where I wouldn’t trust any of them.
All that said - I am absolutely done with newer style sleds. Done. Between the propriety budds software equipment needed to work on practically anything on these sleds, then an engine compartment that’s too small for my 2yearold to even work on, the riding improvement they offer doesn’t even begin to justify the simplicity and workability of the older sleds. Done. I since have put the 2012 137 skid into my 2001, extended the tunnel, and replaced every moving component of the front suspension and steering. As the gentleman mentions in the video, a lot of the old sleds ride like crap because, well, they’re old and need parts suspension/drive train components refreshed. My old reliable sled now rides better than ever, and I can practically rebuild or replace any portion of the sled with my eyes closed.

I really like my 97 Polaris Indy 600 for trail riding but I found myself wanting to go off trail a lot more and I can carve it pretty good but I found it super uncomfortable so yeah hopefully I can get a newer sled

Last year I replace my 97 XLT with a 14 Pro-RMK. Out of the many improvements the best by a long shot was the suspension, my back will thank me when I’m older. When I bought it 10 years ago it still had decent power and suspension, but the 600 has the same HP as the old 700s, and weighs less. I couldn’t ever go back, and I loved that XLT! I’ll probably keep the XLT around to loan out and for towing sled loads of wood.

Another great video and subject matter, Watching this one brought back a few memories, Yes thing's sure have changed over the year's, doesn't seem that long ago i also had a 97 S chassis 583, pulling it over was a bear. I dreamed of having electric start, and moved up to a 2007 Blizzard SDI, i was in my glory, after riding that for a few year's i moved up to latest a 2016 MXZX Renegade 800 R E Tec, The R Motion was a major point in the purchase, this year was the first time i was never sore after a long Day and 250 klm ride, They continue to come out with better and better stuff, but now i'm content with this newer technology

Hi Dave ! Love your videos ! I just upgraded from a 1999 fomula 583 to a 2011 summit. One thing you forgot to mention is that you have to get a sled that suits your riding. I used to fight going in deep snow and now the 163" made it a breeze ! Cheers from quebec !

Great video Dave. Really like your new sled, I'm looking at getting a mid 2000s 600 next year as well. E-start and reverse are high on my want list. Love my 98 MXZ 500 but after suffering a herniated disc last year, pull starting and moving a 500 lb sled isn't as easy though I don't think I could ever let the 500 go. Always good to have a 2nd anyway lol.
In the early 80s we made carbides out of concrete rebar! Lol a welder and some bolts n rebar! And it worked! But even the new ones break down! Lol

Whoa, that was rough. I'd suggest you never stand with one knee on the seat unless you are stopped. Off the line difference in the two is due to clutch differences. The old MXZ does not engage at 3000rpm like the newer unit. That old 670 is a monster. They actually had sanction racing classes based on this engine.Perhaps the Formula SS and Mach Z's were more power. Some had duel exh. Pipes. I.e. if you know how to ride, that is one fast ass sled. PS: needing to feed primer while earming up is a sure sign your carbs pilot jets need cleared out. That will also hinder your take offs.
Hi LO. Sorry but that is inaccurate. A couple of shots on the primer on a cold day, even with a freshly cleaned carb, is completely normal, just like leaving a choke on until its warm. Once its warm, it runs and idles fine. The semi kneeling position is often part of snowmobile safety training, it is useful when you need to see farther ahead, hills or other off trail riding. The sled should be operated at reduced speeds when using this position. You’re right though it’s a fast sled. Thanks for watching.

Sorry, thats the challenge. Royal distributing will have a lot of maintenance type stuff, and i hit ebay a lot. Search for “nos” new old stock.
Great video, Dave. There’s something to be said about the fact that ZX chassis’ are selling for the same, if not more, than REV chassis machines.... don’t get rid of your old sled due to technology improvements. There’s so much that can be done to the older sleds that you just can’t do to the newer ones (cost wise, especially). For example: simply swapping out rear skids can make a world of difference, same goes for front suspension. Risers are incredibly affordable and aftermarket seat options can shed tons of weight off. Many of the parts on the newer sleds can actually be used on the older ones without modification. I’ve just wrapped up a ZX chassis build with a stock REV 6” riser, stock REV tail light assembly with cargo rack, stock REV SC4 rear skid, and an aftermarket seat from SKINZ (which weighs 7lbs).
Things to consider before giving up on the older sleds. Either way, though...as long as you’re out riding, it’s a good day!
Hi Matt, I get what you're saying ....In terms of re-sale, the same is true of the S-chassis sleds and IMHO its nuts. What people are asking for 20+ year old sleds is insane. I would never pay over 2K (Canadian) for a 2000 or older, no matter what condition. You are right about swapping out rear skids, but I would question the ability to upgrade a swing arm set up to an A-Arm suspension. The motor in the 600 will never perform anywhere near the same as the Rev. Risers are affordable, and they do address the height of the handlebar, but for me, the remainder of the sled is designed to be ridden seated, and you are left with a big hole in the dash. I'm not a big fan of mods, I'd rather buy a sled designed with the features I'm looking for. That said, for those who have fun modding and running a Frankensled, I'm in no way putting them down, it's a GREAT hobby. Just not my thing. (Although...the rear skid is worth looking at....) Thanks for the comment. All great points to make, and definitely something to think about in relation to hanging on to an older sled. I'm planning to keep both for now.
@@MyOldSled You can't change the trailing arm suspension to double A arm without some serious fabrication, but you can change the spring and shock setup for better handling. The REV riser looks and feels like it was meant to be there from the start (I dont know about holes in dashes). The SC-4 skid slides right in where the SC-10 used to be and it rides like a dream. I'd invite you to check it out when I'm heading up that way. This weekend we're sledding on Rice Lake....
Over the years I've found that with various things. Even computers. You can put in more ram, buy faster processors...but the board and other architecture are still old. Always better to just buy the newer platform. I've said in a couple of threads, I don't knock anyone who's having fun modding their sled, but my preference is to buy a sled with the feature I want.
I’ve been saving to purchase a sled for the upcoming winter 2020, and am between an older Zr550,mxz, vs a rev! So this video did not directly help, but did give me good important information to help me decide! And a great vid to explain to my mom the differences😝

Great video Dave. Huge difference between my 91 and my 02...obviously. I agree that it doesn't take much to keep the 90's sleds in good shape and sometimes a little easier to work on (simpler). But every year those newer sleds look more and more appealing and you can find some sweet deals this time of year for sleds that are new or only a couple years old.

I love my 1997 jag 440 I don’t go on big rides last year I only put on 100 or so km and there’s 4300 on her! But I’m keeping it for the rest of my life be great for around the farm in winter and I only paid $1500 for it with around 4000km

rev chassis is so much more comfortable but the s2000 chassis looks so much better and the 670 is probably faster than the 600. thats a nice 97 you have! 😍😍

Wow nice new sled i want to upgrade eventually but not for a while im 13 and just got into snowmobiling and own a vintage 1984 yamaha srv 540 flinstone snowmobile i like it for an old sled like it is. Easy maintenance and reliable lol way better than my old 86 indy 400

Great video! I have 2 2002 ZX chassis (500 legend fan and 500 grand touring fan). this is my first year sledding. I rented a 2019 skidoo Grand Touring in Colorado and it was night and day difference with the suspension! I am waiting for the snow to melt and find a Rev chassis EFI. Love the channel man!

Just for reference, the REV uses some of the same suspension components, a similar skid, and the same clutch as the ZX chassis sleds...Big difference is the riding position.
Hi Austin, My 97 is an S-chassis, the ZX was introduced in 99, but in terms of rear suspension, no major design changes, the biggest change is the front suspension. The riding position is definitely one of the big visible changes. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Brother has an 98 600 mxz. And i got a 05 renegade. In my opinion they are both great in different ways wold ride either but did like the longer track.

Got a friend with a 09 summit. Its really nice but he can't disconnect anything electronically without have to be taken to the dealer to have the computer flashed so it will run again. I just rebuilt the top end of my 99 yamaha with a performance balance kit from Wiseco. Took the better part of a day in labour but its up and running just fine. Was very easy to DIY.
I don't think I would attempt to fix anything newer then 2005 myself. Right around the time they changed to the Rider forward position sleds got more complicated to fix on your own. But thats how the dealers want them. I had a guy come into the store and purchase electrical contact cleaner to maybe fix his handle bar safety switch on a new sled. If your not gripping the handle bars your sled won't go.
Why is it more often then not its all the tech crap they are adding to new stuff that is the stuff thats breaking causing the issues.
I hear you. It's the same with cars. I gave up working on my own cars a long time ago. Personally, I don't think it's ethical to create a situation where people must go to a dealer, and it does seem sometimes that is the situation, especially when the software you need is proprietary. A lot of newer machines require specialized tools. Hopefully by the time those sleds are older, those tools will be available to the consumer market.
Even if I had the money I wouldn't upgrade. My 1971 ski whiz is bucketloads of fun in even the worst storms North Dakota can throw at me. Nice video though. Good and informative.

670 not having the nikasil jugs is a plus.My 98 has 8500 miles with all original other than a set of pistons rings and oil pump gear.I finally bought an 05 800x and have had to replace the nun and the crankshaft pistons and jugs.Yeah its a way better ride but the durability and reliability aren't even close between the 2 in my opinion
The very best thing u can do to a rev is a new seat.. a set riser like the new ones have u sit higher less back and strain on the knees
I love the mechanical aspect of my old 98 Formula 500 but unfortunately it’s almost unrideable when the trails get washboarded because I am just too tall to stand up or kneel so it absolutely kills the neck and back. I wish I could just upgrade the ride ability portion and keep the carbs and mechanicals as is.

Great video Dave. I’m in the same boat as you. My first (old) sled is a 00 ZL600. New clutch right after I bought it. Picked up a second sled that is a 08 F6. What a difference 6 years makes. What kind of mileage do you get with Gas and Oil on the Rev?
Haven’t had it long enough to comment. After the season I need to pull it apart, check and adjust the oil pump, clean raves etc. Then I’ll have a better idea.

583 and 670 engines were some of the best engines made and in radar runs and drags they always were 1st and 2nd place.. The 99 ho 670s were sleepers. They would eat up a lot of triples in the drags!

PS: The first gen Rev was nice, but the whole shock tower nun can was a mess. I have pounded on many, trying to get the sled squared up and back straight. Not easy. That old sled may outlive the 2005-6 models.
That structural cross member (nun) is definitely susceptible to impact...I try not hit anything. ;) I agree the old sled is built to last. Still starts every time. Thats why I haven’t sold it.

There is way less to go wrong on the older sled your 05 is way more likely to break down than your 97 because there’s way more parts to fail. And if the 97 breaks down it’s so simple to fix that anybody could do it old sleds are more reliable and last longer you can fix them on the side of the trail and keep going 90 percent of the time. The 90’s sleds are built way better than the new ones this is coming from a guy that owned both.

My Old Sled I’m loving it! It took me a little to get used to the rider forward seating, but my back feels much better after long rides. Happy sledding!
Make sure you check brakes on those older mxzs if you get one. I’ve seen a lot of pictures recently of sleds that burned down due to this.

Does your 05 rev have a bulkhead brace kit on it? Would recommend one if you do more than just trail rides.
Hi Spencer. No, it doesn’t. If I were hill climbing, racing etc I might, but the odds are pretty good I won’t run my sled into anything immmovable. I might if I have a slow week and the sleds apart, but it’s not high on my list.
dude you need to buy the upgraded fly wheel I have the 05sdi to and the flywheel blew up because the magnet shredded and yeah it sucked heads up though its about 900 dollars it sucks. but hey great video!!

I have an 03 800 sport. Added beavertail delete so could add linQ etra fuel tank. Only problem with sled its a fuel🐖🐖🐖.runs great tho. Wonder what would take to upgrade to the fuel injected?
I can't see it being practical, or worth the cost and effort. Assuming the jugs and crank are the same, you'd need a stator, different fuel pump, computer (ECM), throttle body, injectors, O2 sensor, exhaust gas temperature sensor, throttle position sensor etc...I imagine the oil pump is different, I'm assuming the jugs are different to accommodate the injectors in the transfer port...thats just off the top of my head...I'm sure it would make more sense to sell your sled and buy an SDI.

I bought a rev also this year. I find myself on my pantera 1000 more. Guess i just dont like being up so high and tipsy. Something i just dont like about it.

Not all the old sleds are heavier, my 91 phazer is way light than my 03 rev 800. Rider forward is a huge improvement tho making the jump to a rev was mindbogglingly better. The older sleds were butt bangners lol.

Sorry, not sure what you mean do you mean a copy of Go Snowmobiling magazine? If so, you get it if you buy a trail permit. You could look on the OFSC website, not sure if they sell old copies.

Yes they are pretty darn expensive. In December my dad finally picked up his 2019 backcountry country xrs. Had a dealership set it all up and we’ve been there for a long time. 15678$.
We also just got rid of our old revs and got a 2010 and a 2011 for my sister and I my mom has the 2017 backcountry

Upgrades in sled technology go fast. Getting off my 1969 ski daddler and riding my 1971 ski whiz brings a huge difference in the comfort and control. Then getting off my 1971 ski whz and onto my 1979 john deere trailfire i feel another huge difference. Then going up to the 1993 polaris indy lite is the same difference again.
One thing I hate about my rev is the little trianglular gas guage it’s not on my dash like I’m used to

Sorry wolf, never done it. I imagine it would, as long as it fits, including the exhaust, and the cutches align properly. You might have to weld some mounts. There must be an arctic cat forum where someone has done it, but it doesn’t seem too hard.

Thanks for noticing, that was not easy :) technically Canada follows the British pronounciation, “zed”. Typically my friends in the United States say “zee.” Most of the time I try and say both, but this time I thought I’d change it up for you guys.

Can't even compare the two. Can't vouch for top end, but the SDI leaves my older sled in the dust.

How much does each sled weigh?
The 97 MXZ weighs in around 525, the ’05 at around 479. It really isn’t just the weight, but how it’s distributed. Thanks for watching.

Not at all. A 2005 is hardly new. And i still have the 97. Lots of topics for videos.
I find new sleds less involved, I love riding 80s sleds because you can drift everywhere and just lay the power down all the time, I really dont see the appeal of modern snowmobiles with that forward position, you sort of just understeer everywhere, no drifting or power sliding is even possible
A lot of it depends on the type of riding you do. I was out on the older sled today and had a lot of fun with it. Its definitely a different type of riding. I'm personally not into drifting, but you're basically using throttle and steering to keep a vehicle in a constant state of oversteering with your back end sliding around corners...You can do that in either sled, (as long as your track isn't studded) though the lower, wider stance of the 670 makes it more comfortable. A soon as you hit deeper snow, drifts, or trying to pull the sled over, you see the appeal of the newer chassis designs really quick. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
