Start to Finish SURFBOARD build - Time Lapse - Hybrid blue thruster

- A friend asked if I could combine the best elements of his fish and thruster into one surfboard and of course I accepted the challenge.
Here is the result -
A surfboard representation of a reverse mullet haircut. Party up front and business down the back. With a wide fishy template forward pulling into a thinly foiled rounded pin thruster in the tail. With the idea of still being able to paddle easily and glide but also hold in waves with a more critical face than most fish would allow.
He is a wine maker and a huge fan of the UFO topic so with that in mind I also drew up some custom decals for the board.
To everyone that replied on my post regarding shaping one on one lessons. Unfortunately yet again a politician has screwed us over and locked our borders indefinitely.
Would everyone prefer a video lesson maybe once a week? Let me know in the comment section and if I get enough numbers ill do a Patreon page to facilitate.
Yet again thanks for watching, I really do appreciate it. - Навчання та стиль
Came for the shaping, stayed for the sweet music. I think we'd all like to see weekly tutorials!

I wonder how a twin + trailer would be like with that shape?
Probably sick!
Nice
C' est beau une planche quand même !!!!
board looks so radical.
it would be great if we could get a shaping bay and quiver tour sometime!
Definitely
Super Bomba di TAVOLA! 🤘💪💪💪💪

All I want for my birthday is a shrednaught board 🤤
Yew!
Please tell me how to contact for purchase. Your vids are fulfilling to the soul, your work is mesmerizing and ty for time well spent. Very impressive, Sir, great work!
Appreciate the kinda words mate. At this point I’m not doing any customs. I’ll have more videos coming soon though 🤙
cool👍
🤘
Awesome board man! Thanks for such great content. I'm just finishing up my own first board and these vids really help. I like the finish you had with the acrylic coat and I am wondering what grit you wet sanded to, and since you are sanding - whether it matters if you buy a gloss or satin acrylic to begin with.
Thanks mate 🤙 the final sand of the acrylic is just to remove any dust zits that had settled. It was done with a 360 polish pad. Na it doesn’t really matter if you go gloss or satin I think.. after sanding it’ll probably look the same.
Great board. Thank for sharing! What are you rolling on as your final gloss??
Another great board. Two questions; 1-when you applied the deck logo, you don’t need to sand the edges flat before hot coating? Same with the bottom tail patch? I’ve been using this technique on the last couple boards but I figured I needed to sand the fiberglass edge flat. 2- after you sign the board and use the roller, that’s the glass coat, right? It didn’t look like the fin boxes were re-taped?! Never seen a roller used but looks like it works well without a lot of drip. I’m assuming it’s a foam roller. Anyway, sorry for all the questions. Your channel is full of great content and awesome boards🤙
Thanks mate. I don’t sand the edges flush but it won’t hurt. Just try to be neat and you should be all good.
The roller part is a clear acrylic sealer coat. Not resin. Gives the board a nice finish and helps protect and seal.
Cheers
Very nice concept! Great looking board! I’m really curious how that board surfs/performs
He has had it for a few months now and tells me he loves it in a barrel 🎉
Can confirm. 2nd wave riding it I pulled into a little barrel and it was so easy...but I guess it always seems easy when it happens! Finding them is the hard part!
Yewww. Sweet video. Slow mo and music for the win. Best shaping videos!
Whats your mix ration for the gloss cost you put down with the roller? Cheers legend
Thanks man. It’s not gloss but an acrylic sealer. Just roll it on and let it dry
Hi, great job, I always see you doing amazing things, I really liked the tool you used to make the concave, what's the name of it.... don't stop, keep making these amazing boards..
Thanks mate. I think it’s just called a concave / convex sanding block. I found it on a surfboard supplier website.
Another great video!
I’m curious, why do you install the fin boxes after glassing? Do you use this technique with epoxy resins as well?
Thanks man. I do the boxes after glass when doing a tint. I’ve found it to make the box install look cleaner. You can do it with epoxy but normally I’ve I’m doing a clear board I’ll just install them pre glass into the foam
Hey Shrednaught nice work..The light blue colour tint looks great..
Did you use a white base before adding the light blue? Thank you
Thanks mate. No white base. This colour is already mixed to that exact light blue colour.
you just eyeballed those lines for the rails and the cut lap?! amazing!
Haha I do scratch a little guide line on there but don’t tell anyone 😅
@@Shrednaught thanks man! i'm trying to shape. still in the researching phase.. what's the roller for at 6:20 mark? last step is a gloss coat after fine sanding? really dig the great details on the fin box installation aspect. saw your DIY jig as well! excellent!
When doing a cut lap I use a hard rubber roller on the lap edge whilst it’s still a green. This pushes the raised part of the lap flush with the foam and takes away the need to sand that lap line before deck laminate
I don’t gloss on this one. I use a clear acrylic sealer that I apply with a roller 🤙
Well done Bro!
Picking up heaps from your vids.
Where did you source the long router bit to cut your outline? I've looked high and low at Bunnings.
Also, I've been doing a couple of boards with alternative cloths ie. Basalt, flax, hemp combinations and PET cloth (recycled plastic bottles). A bit different to work with but nice boards aesthetically and kinda "feel good" with regards to the environment. The cost is a little higher than standard cloth which is a little discerning for the budget conscious but it'd be great to see you do a build with this stuff.
Power On!🤙
Found the router bit on eBay. Was pretty cheap. I’ve used basalt but never flax or hemp. I would like to use some so I might try do one in the future
Beautiful board -- reminds me of a Dick Brewer round pin I rode back in the day. Agree about the excellent editing. One question: What do the notches on the front edges of the fins do?
Thanks mate. I think you’re talking about the fins that I use to set the fin boxes with? Those notches are there to help when placing tape on the fins to hold the fin boxes down until they have cured.
Would you recommend a first time shape be made in a CAD or just eyeball it and see what comes out and have a blast with it.
Having a board shaped on a cnc does make the experience a lot easier but it still requires some hand shaping at the end. It does depend on what you’re looking for? If you were thinking of making boards for yourself more so I’d say go with the handshaping and try learn as much as possible on the first because it’ll be rough.. but it’ll still surf.
Nicely done.Makes me want to get the shed again! The finish coat, was it resin or something else?
Thanks Jim. It is an acrylic sealer coat. Gives the finish product a nice satin/matte finish
Looks awesome! Curious, what's the bottom contour? Single concave up front to more of a rolled v through the fins?
Thanks man. Yeh single from nose moving to a double through the fins to flat off the tail. I was considering V out the tail but I think that it wasn’t really needed with the design
I miss PU. My next shape it'll be PU. Although epoxy ding less than PU, but I want to feel the tiny flex PU has. Nice shape here.
There is always room for an epoxy and pu in the quiver 🎉
@@Shrednaught I went back to PU. Bought two blanks the other day. Just shaped and glassed the asym and now shaping a mini egg. Quiver is at 6 boards. Can't wait for the winter. 🌊.
Yew! I do love asyms 🤙
Beautiful board. What oz glass do you use for finbox patches and for tail patch. Cheers
Just 4oz for the patches on this one. So double 4 overall
Hello,
What tools model do you use for "cut" the outline ?
And what tools model to polish tour glass?
Thanks you !
Thanks for the vids 🤙🏻 What kind of roller are you using for the final hot coat ?
The final coat I roll on is a clear acrylic sealer. Not resin. It’s just a cheap disposable foam roller. You can be them from any hardware for a couple bucks
good job! what varnish do you use?
Do you sand the line between tail patch over fins before you hot coat or not necessary? At this step in my build, thanks
If I understand the questions it isn’t necessary.
🤙🏻🤩🙌🏻🔥
Nice vid. U show put a vid of someone surfing it at the end
Definitely would love to do this. Photographers cost too much for me though 😅
@@Shrednaught Ahh that's understandable man. Great content either way! Good shit
Cheers dude 🤘
Awesome, now make make me a 6'6" tri fin swallow tail please 👍😎
🤘🤘
What is the name of the roller that you pass to the deck lap? I had never seen it before! Great job!
I can’t remember the exact product name but I found it in a hardware store. It’s just a firm rubber roller so have a quick google and it shouldn’t be too hard to find.
Awesome board! What was that last coat you put on? Sealer of some sort?
Thanks mate . Yeh it’s an acrylic sealer coat.
Hey bru, why do you choose to use an orbital sander over a polisher to finish the board?
You video inspired me so much I'm gearing up to shape my own board haha
Good stuff!
I use the mirka orbital for 2 reasons. Firstly is dust extraction. Because I don’t have a dedicated sanding bay atm I needed something with a vac attachment. And secondly is that it leaves a much finer/nicer finish when doing the later grits for finish sanding.
As always great production man! That little sander does a great job for you! Is there an aftermarket pad on it and if so which one?
Very used to guys having multiple machines with many density foam pads so love seeing this little yellow dude chugging along and still getting a great finish
Thanks for being an excellent content creator
I always look forward to a post by you.
Thanks mate. It’s all just standard. It does take longer than if I was to use a polisher / sander but it’s definitely worth it as it’s got dust extraction. A trade off that I’ll take any day 👌
@@Shrednaught Love the video. Can you say what model of sander from Mirka you're using. Trying to decide if i get a sander polisher, but this option looks more versatile for woodworking and other DIY. Thanks mate.
It’s a mirka deros 5 and I use the mirka pads to sand with. The advantage for me was the fact that it had a dust extraction and also the power to use 80grit and still get the board flush. Highly recommend although it is pricey.
@Shrednaught ended up getting the makita bo6050j which is working well for me so far. I'd imagine a little more cumbersome than your deros but has many of the same features and useful for the woodshop too 🤙
I did look at these as well. Is it worth the investment?
Il like to create my own long board like you your the best can you help me
Hey! What's that "loaf of bread" looking thing you keep laying on your boards when you're working??
Just a brick with foam and tape .. super high tech 🤣
What a magnificent blue!
What is the roller application at the end, if you mind me asking, ploise?
I had the same question
It’s a clear acrylic sealer. Gives the board a nicer finish and helps protect it a little bit
Hello bro nice job plz i have a question in 5:52 of the video you started to cut the borders, we do that before the resine get drying or before tnx
The cutlap is cut when the resin has hardened but not completely cured.
@@Shrednaught tnx so gentil from you i really apreciate that
Hey mate! Do you recommend just resin or thickened resin when putting in FCS fin boxes?
If you can use milled fibre with the resin to try give it some structural strength.
Just curious, why do you mark the outline if you just cut it with a flush cut router bit ?
Nice board and nice edit. What varnish di you use ?
It’s a clear acrylic floor sealer 🤙
Looks like you got a new planer. Is it the Makita with casica mod kit? How are you liking it?
I like it. I think the handle is the one thing that I couldn’t do without now. Makes it feel much more comfortable
What bit do you use for the leash plug plunge cut?
Just a flush cut for plunge. Diablo is the brand. Just grab whatever size matches your leggies. Think mine is 25 or 28mm
Nice work, did you use four oz cloth for the tail patch?
Thanks mate. Yeh from memory it was 4oz
What kind of pen do you use to write your dims and sign? Ive had some bleeding in the past “poly”
Just posca paint pens.
where you get that measure square. Board is so slickkkk
Cheers mate. I think it was either shapers or surfboard studio .com
Hey where do you get all your supplies like resins and stuff
Hey mate,
I get most of my supplies from our local surf board building supplier. Colin Earle surf supplies.
Online is always the best way to find someone close to you.
Eyyy nice one! I noticed you didn’t do a tape lap on the top hot coat - any specific reason?
Saves tape 😅
Hah the real reason is that I am able to push the resin around the rails and onto the bottom lap. Once it’s gone hard and I flip it , it allows me to easily sand that bottom lap nice and flush for fin box instal and to tap hard edges and do the final fill coat on the bottom.
@@Shrednaught ahhhh nice trick! Cheater coat on the bottom lap + saves tape.
👌
How can I get one sent to California? I’m impressed on the complete craftsmanship! What would it cost me for a board just like that? Then shipping?
One Billion dollaridoos
Haha yeh pretty much. As much as I’d love to get a board over there it’s cost wouldn’t be worth it after shipping. You should try a local in California. There’s some absolute killer shapers over there 🤘
