Colorize them please. What you see here are women that took that monthly bath, put on their best dress for their once a year picture that was quite expensive in that era. If you notice you'll see that the pics are also reversed like a mirror image.

Depends. If the woman is ugly to begin with, no hairstyle is going to improve her. Still, these women in the 1850s/60s are far more interesting and feminine than most American women are today.

They had to stay still for a while for the photo to take. I'm not sure what dental care was like in those days. On top of that, you were thought a drunken no good if you smiled in photos.

Some of the women are naturally attractive, and others are a little homely. All are showing something called "dignity" which is an alien concept to most modern people these days.
