I love the videos where you give useful tips regarding waste materials like this. I find things like this to be very beneficial as you are right, there are many uses for waste ends of cdc feathers and many other materials for use as dubbing and materials get expensive quick. We often invest thousands over time with our love and passion for the sport and in our materials to tie quality flies, so the more use we get out of items, the more we save. CDC is one the the most useful materials available to the hobby. Be it used as wing, klink post, hackle, breathers, or as a dubbing. On its own or as a part of a blend with other materials. The combination of soft natural movement and it’s natural buoyancy. Are unmatched. Recycling the waste unused fibres is a resource that cannot be undervalued. Be it as a body of a dry. Or a thorax of an emerging insect. When used as a thorax mix in a few hares ear fibres for that extra buggy leg effect.
Great use of cut offs. I throw all my cut offs into a bag, all different colours, then sit down with a dram and cut and mix them. I get some interesting mixes. Sometimes throw in a bit seal, SLF, hare and or a bit flash.
I do collect all my wast from CDC, especiallly after the F flies. there is so much ... once the bag is full it be going for dubbing just like you did there :) greetings!
Great wee video Davie. Is it worth dying it different colours or will that strip out the oils and make it less buoyant or would you only dye the domestic white cdcd's? Thanks for the tips. 👍👏🎣
Hi Clark, Dyeing the CDC feathers will wash out the natural oils but I have to be honest I always use a floatant on my CDC flies as they will float far longer and take a few more fish before you need to change it..I do dye the natural white cdc feathers from the domestic duck as you'll get the better colours though the natural grey dyed can work as well with certain colours like yellow which will give you a lovely dark olive.. Well that's time I'll never get back. I already know how to use scissors and didn't need to see 5+ minutes of the same thing over and over and over-30 seconds would have sufficed. Was hoping this vid would actually get into showing how you using the fibres once they were removed from the stems. But alas...

Or you could have used your brain and fast forward to see if/how he used it instead of being an ungrateful Brat. Experiment, dub it up on a thread, make a loop etc. Use your brain. The fact that he took the time to link you a video where he uses said dubbing speaks about davies Character and your lack of even a simple thank you speaks volumes of yours.

I love Mr. McPhails workspace. I wish mine was so tidy.
